Shahid Modarres

Shahid Modarres

December 1, day of assassination of Ayatollah Modarres, is designated as day of parliament in the Iranian calendar.

Shahid Sayyed Hassan Modarres was born in 1899 in Ardestan city. His father was Sayyed Ismael Modarres and his grand father was Mir Abdol Baqi Modarres.

In 1905, Sayyed Ismael left for Qomshe.

He was not alone. His 6-year-old son was with him. There, he did his best concerning promulgating Islamic sciences and culture.

Ayatollah Modarres was just 14 when he lost his grandfather who was one of the great men of theology.

Not only Shahid Modarres was being taught by his father (in the field of religious sciences) but also he was studying Arabic language in Haj. Abdol Hamid Theological School (Seminary).

Doing as what was mentioned in his grand father’s will, Shahid Modarres left for Esfahan to complete his studies. There, he spent ten years in studying and researching.

During this time he enjoyed the meeting of so many scientists which he estimated them to be 30. His most famous teachers were: Sheikh Abdol Ali Harandi, Sayyed Mohammad Dorchehee, Sayyed Sadiq Khatoon Abadi, Mirza Jahangir Qashqayee and Molla Mohammad Kashani.

Modarres also enjoyed the meeting of Ayatollah Mirza Hassan Shirazi and he studied the sciences and caught his professor’s attention.

When Ayatollah Sayyed Hassan Shirazi passed away, the authority of the Shii community was given to Ayatollah Mirza Taqi Shirazi.

Modarres was actively involved in sessions of lesson and debates, and making progress in terms of achieving the higher ranks of science.

Here comes his word: "Any campaign must have an aim otherwise it would never lead to a definite result. One should try hard to eradicate the tree of injustice. Breaking the branches has no use."

Modarres was an active person in scientific and political affairs. He was the combination of "religion" and "Politics".

Along with religious affairs, he tried to investigate political and social matters as well, believing that there will be no separation of religion and politics.

Thanks to Shahid Sayyed Fazlollah Noori in the course of the Constitutional Movement an article was passed and was included as amendment to the constitution.

According to the article, whatever passed in the parliament must be controlled by five outstanding Islamic religious jurists so that any cases contrary to Islamic values would be annulled.

The related article just once was put to practice in the second session of parliament when five authorities were chosen by the Islamic authorities to revise the passed bills. Modarres was among them.

He, who was at that time in Esfahan, came to Tehran to accept his new responsibility. At the end of the second session there was a story of Russian ultimatum on Iran. Having occupied a part of Iran, and approaching Qazvin, Russia issued a colonialistic ultimatum.

Iran was given a 48-hour chance to agree with the Russian ultimatum. In case of any disagreement of the Iranian side, Russians would attack Tehran.

Having been informed of the Russian Ultimatum, the parliament deputies got very nervous. The parliament was in session but every one was helpless, knowing nothing about what would be the right measure in that case.

In those critical moments that no one would dare object the Russian ultimatum, Modarres stood up and addressed deputies in this way: "If the affairs are organized in such a way that we loose our independence by exercising force, It would not be suitable that we ourselves sign it."

Then he continued while shouting" No, we never surrender. We resist and we are not afraid of these threats." His courage motivated the deputies and governors to agree on refusing the Russian ultimatum.

Also, he objected to the convention of 1919, which was considered as another chapter in his campaigning history.

After Reza khan’s coup, which was British oriented, Modarres opposed him severely. One of the signs of his opposition to Reza Khan would be his interpellation and clashes with Reza khan in the parliament.

At that time, Reza Khan was the Prime Minister, used all his energy for British government. Aiming at Satisfying his master (England), he did what ever the British government ordered him.

All of which led to his interpellation by Modarres and some other deputies. Reza Khan was afraid of interpellation (especially in this case). Thus, he tried to avoid it in every way he could.

Reza Khan was moving forward to win the monarchy and finally he achieved it. Modarres, at the time of passing this article began to object. Because according to the article, Reza khan would possess the sovereign power of ruling.

"This measure is against the Constitution even if there have been hundreds of thousands of votes, the situation won’t be changed." Said Modarres while leaving the parliament as a sign of his opposition.

Being Afraid of Modarres and finding him as an insurmountable obstacle in his path toward his aims, Reza Khan decided to terror him which did not work.

It is an old tradition among the powers, which never can be put aside:

"When all of their threats to make the respectable men to succumb fail, they will kill them. They kill the men who never give up campaigning for sake of their homeland’s independence."

The honorable Ayatollah Sayyed Hassan Modarres was not an exception. At first Reza Khan did not let Modarres to come to the 7th session of the parliament. Modarres was out voted; there was even no vote in his favor.

In this way the doors of the parliament were closed to him.

In another attempt, Reza Khan sent one of his close friends to Modarres, trying to win his trust in this way. "Tell him .If you are really truthful let the people act freely then, you will see I will be elected by the people of several cities. Otherwise this parliament is illegal." replied Modarres.

Being disappointed, Reza Khan sent a message to Modarres ordering him not to interfere in political matters.

Here comes Modarres’s Reaction:" To me interference in political matters and campaigning for freedom is my religious duty and where ever I would be I will not give it up."

And in this way every thing was going to be prepared to send Modarres to exile. He was taken to Khorasan and was imprisoned in Khaf.

He had been there for 10 years. Finally he was poisoned according to Reza khan’s order.

Modarres wished to achieve the divine goals. He passed away and left his valuable legacy of thoughts in the course of the historical events, which is why he will be alive as far as the history exists.

Supreme Leader’s Speech to People of Isfahan

Supreme Leader’s Speech to People of Isfahan
17/11/2010

The following is the full text of the speech delivered in Tehran by Ayatollah Khamenei on November 17, 2010 to a group of ordinary citizens from Isfahan.

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

First of all, I would like to welcome you dear brothers and sisters who have travelled this long distance [from Isfahan to Tehran] to imbue the atmosphere of this Hussayniyyah with your faith and emotions on this auspicious Eid. I would also like to congratulate all you dear audience, the dear people of Isfahan, the entire Iranian nation and all Muslims throughout the world on Eid al-Adha. The timing of this meeting is very appropriate. The 25th of Aban represents the sacrifices made by the people of Isfahan, and this occasion has coincided with Eid al-Adha this year.

If we pay attention to the philosophy inherent in Eid al-Adha, many paths will be opened up for us. A select Messenger of the Righteous One, Prophet Ibrahim (a.s.), made a sacrifice on Eid al-Adha. In some cases, sacrificing your loved ones is beyond sacrificing your life. Prophet Ibrahim was about to sacrifice a loved one in the way of God - a young child whom Allah the Exalted had bestowed on him at an old age after a lifetime of waiting. "Praise be to Allah, Who has given me in old age Ismail and Ishaq. Most surely my Lord is the Hearer of prayer." [The Holy Quran, 14: 39] Allah the Exalted had bestowed these two sons on him at an old age, probably after a lifetime of impatient waiting. He had no hope of getting another child at that age. The Master of the Martyrs of the entire world, Imam Hussein (a.s.), who is the symbol of sacrifice and martyrdom, remembers this event in the holy Dua Arafeh: "And Ibrahim decided to sacrifice his son at an old age after waiting a lifetime." This is part of a dua by Imam Hussein (a.s.) in Arafeh, a dua that was recited by hajjis yesterday.

This sacrifice is a symbol for the faithful people who want to tread the path of truth, transcendence and perfection. This is impossible without a sacrifice. In fact, all the tests that we go through involve one essential element - all tests involve a sacrifice. Sometimes this involves sacrificing your life and wealth. Other times it involves forgiving somebody for a comment he makes and insists on stubbornly. Yet other times it involves sacrificing your dear ones - your children and your loved ones. Being tested means going through hardships. When a hardship is placed in the way of an individual or a people, going through this hardship is a test. If they go through this hardship, they will reach the desired destination. And if they fail - if they fail to utilize the talent within them, if they fail to overcome their passions - they will fall by the wayside. This is what a test is. God does not put us through divine tests in order to get to know us and see at what level we are. Divine tests are in fact a step towards one's destination. When we are tested and we manage to go through the hardships of tests, we enter a new situation, a new stage of life. A nation and an individual are not different from one another in this regard.

Last year the Iranian nation went through a difficult test. It went through a fitna. This does not just mean that everybody has realized the Iranian nation is powerful. Rather, what is more important is that our nation entered a new situation after this movement was carried out with this level of capability, the capability to deal with fitna and hardships. Our nation has now obtained a new capability. During their lifetime, people are tested every step of the way. If we manage to overcome our passions, if we manage to utilize our insight, if we manage to detect the right time, and if we recognize the necessary measures to be taken, we will enter a new stage of life. This is a kind of improvement, a kind of progress. Therefore, the 25th of Aban - which is a prominent day and a symbol - has this significance for the people of Isfahan.

I deem it necessary to make a few points about the merits of the people of Isfahan. These things are considered to represent the identity of these faithful, honorable and persistent people. In one day the people of Isfahan held funeral ceremonies for 370 martyrs without batting an eye, and on the same day they sent soldiers to the battlefields. This is a very important point. As the Friday prayer leader of Isfahan said, Imam Khomeini (r.a.) praised the people of Isfahan for this move. In Aban of the year 1361, funeral ceremonies were held for 370 martyrs in one day, and they offered more than one thousand martyrs in the same month. Over one thousand martyrs! Who gets martyred? Those who are in the arena and are exposed to danger - those who are pioneers.

Before the Revolution, Isfahan had an outstanding presence in different events. The same is true of the events related to the Revolution as well as the imposed war. There were military units stationed in Isfahan, whether the units that belonged to the Army of the Guardians of the Revolution - including the Imam Hussein Army headquartered in Isfahan, the Najaf Army headquartered in Najafabad and the Ghamar-e Bani Hashem Brigade - or the units that belonged to the Army, or the artillery center in Isfahan. If you put all these things together, they will become very significant. You will conclude that in arenas that were important to the country the people of Isfahan were considered among the pioneers during and after the eight-year imposed war. The same is true of their role in the growth and development of the country and in scientific issues. Some of the chronic problems of our Armed Forces were resolved in scientific and research centers of Isfahan. These are sources of pride - not in the sense of self-importance, but in the sense of recognizing one's identity and innate talents and moving forward on the basis of this identity and these talents.

Everybody knows that during the eight-year imposed war the people of Isfahan used to cooperate with different military units fighting at the first lines of defense. This is something that is clear to everybody. But what is not so clear to many people is the role of obscure and humble people who acted as backup for the soldiers fighting at the front lines all those years - women who used to help from homes, businessmen who used to work at the bazaar, people who were active in bureaucratic organizations and jihadists who used to provide different kinds of services for the war fronts. There were people among them who were even martyred. There were people among them who were martyred or offered martyrs, and they were humble people whose names have not been registered anywhere. But they are famous in heaven. Not even the smallest things go unaccounted for in divine calculations. All those aid caravans from Isfahan, all those efforts and all that motivation, yet look at the families of those martyrs. Martyrs went through only a moment of hardship, and they flew to heaven. They did not suffer much. "Surely the friends of God - they shall have no fear nor shall they grieve." [The Holy Quran, 10: 62] It was their families who suffered. Fathers, mothers, wives, children, brothers, sisters and bereaved ones - they were patient, and they felt proud. There are some families in Isfahan who have offered three martyrs. There are some families who had only one son, and they sent him to the battlefield. They are Ibrahims of our time. These are the things that form the identity of a nation. These are the things that help a nation achieve glory.

No nation will ever achieve anything by sitting around, eating, sleeping, relying on foreigners and letting passions dominate its life. Some people spin negative yarns when there is a mention of the Sacred Defense, make sarcastic comments when there is a mention of martyrdom, distort their faces when there is a mention of disabled soldiers and war veterans and laugh scornfully when there is a mention of centrifuges for uranium enrichment. They simply shake their heads and say, "It is impossible." These people do not understand anything about the movement of a nation. Those who have been trained in a wrong way and according to corrupt satanic ethics do not understand anything about the effect of faith and jihad.

When a nation comes to believe in jihad, it becomes a pioneer in all arenas. Jihad is not just limited to holding a rifle in your hand. Jihad means that one should see oneself in the arena of action and fight against the obstacles and those who create them. Jihad means that one should feel responsible and committed. This is what genuine jihad is. This is Islamic jihad. Jihad may be carried out by laying down one's life. It may also be carried out through one's wealth, thought, shouting slogans, taking to the streets and going to the ballot boxes. This is jihad in the way of Allah, and it is what helps a nation grow, make progress and become dynamic, revitalized and hopeful.

How is it possible to fight such a nation? The camp that is opposed to Islam, the Islamic Revolution and the Islamic Republic was created in the world in order to fight this magnificent phenomenon. How can it go about this fight? It is not possible to fight it through war - they tried this and saw the result. It is not possible to fight it through war and military threats. It is not possible to fight it through sanctions. Those who think that they can bring the Iranian nation to its knees through sanctions are just wasting their time. When a nation has hope and faith and knows what it is doing, it cannot be forced to retreat through the use of threats.

In order to fight such a nation, they will pay attention to the point that you mentioned [refers to a slogan shouted by the audience], which is indicative of the vigilance of you dear people of Isfahan: Creating a rift in the nation, turning the people against one another, creating a gap between the people and government officials, and causing suspicion and disagreement over trivial issues. This is one of the most important forms of enmity utilized by the enemies of the Islamic Revolution. We should be vigilant.

Of course the people of Isfahan have been vigilant. They acted appropriately during the past events. They had a brilliant performance in the face of the fitna of the year 1388 and on the 9th of Dey - in that self-initiated public movement. Everybody should guard against creation of division, fitna and suspicion of the system. You see some people leveling accusations against the Islamic Republic here and there with no regard for any considerations or principles. They act as the enemy's representatives and say whatever they like because if the propaganda machines of the anti-Islam, Zionist and American camp could not make themselves heard, they want to be able to make up for it and deliver their message to people. These people are betraying the nation. This is in fact a clear betrayal. Making the people suspect each other and the hardworking government officials and creating an atmosphere of despair - these are one of the methods.

Another method is to promote moral corruption in society. Everybody, especially our youth, should be extremely vigilant. Unfortunately moral corruption and moral degeneration are used as a means to further the political goals of the arrogant powers. In order to weaken and annihilate a nation - and of course to obtain money in the process - they use drugs as means to further their political goals in many parts of the world. Our nation, our youth and our government officials should be extremely careful about these things.

Isfahan enjoys highly prominent capacities, just as it did in the past. You should appreciate these capacities. Isfahan is the center of knowledge - religious knowledge and different other types of knowledge. It used to be the center of knowledge in the past as well. Fortunately Isfahan has a good Islamic seminary today. There are some prestigious universities in Isfahan as well. Of course the scientific record of Isfahan is longer than this. It behooves the ulama, scholars and researchers of Isfahan to set their sights on the glory that Isfahan used to enjoy during the past centuries. One day Isfahan was the center of scientific brilliance in the entire country and even in the entire world of Islam. You should be after such a position. Isfahan is also prominent in artistic areas, fine arts and handicrafts. Each of these things is an advantage. And the religious faith and beliefs of the people of Isfahan is the supporting foundation of all these things. This has been manifested in the behavior of the people of Isfahan since before the Revolution, but after the Revolution everything acquired new dimensions. I used to visit Isfahan a lot at that time. I was witness to the religious situation of the people and their commitment to religious matters. Of course their religious commitment has grown tens and even hundreds of times stronger than that time. Therefore, this religious faith is a great prop. You should appreciate these blessings - they act as the foundation for supporting all material and spiritual advances.

When a nation enjoys faith, it feels that nothing it does is ever futile. Thanks to faith, everything that one does becomes meaningful. This faith should be preserved. By Allah's favor, today the Iranian nation has managed to successfully confront different kinds of hostilities. In today's world, the basis of the enmity of the anti-Islam camp towards the Islamic Republic is the faith of this government, this Republic and this nation in divine values. Materialistic leaders cannot tolerate this. All the enmities are due to our adherence to divine values. This is one side of the issue.

The other side of the issue is that the progressive movement of the Iranian nation during the past 32 years was all because of divine faith and devotion to these values. You should firmly preserve this commitment. You should know that this progress will continue. By Allah's grace and favor, the hostilities we are faced with will not achieve any results, and the Iranian nation will emerge victorious out of all these issues.

Dear God, bestow Your mercy, grace and assistance on this nation and on the dear people of Isfahan. Make the holy heart of the Imam of the Age satisfied with us, and make us benefit from his prayers.

Greetings be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings

Supreme Leader’s Speech to Army Cadets

Supreme Leader’s Speech to Army Cadets
10/11/2010

The following is the full text of the speech delivered by Ayatollah Khamenei on November 10, 2010 at the graduation ceremony held at Shahid Sattari University.

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

I would like to extend my congratulations to the dear graduates and the faithful youth who have finished their dignified studies and will start their services as members of the Islamic Republic of Iran's Armed Forces and the honorable Army of the Islamic Republic. I would also like to extend my congratulations to the dear youth who received epaulets, and I hope they will continue their education successfully.

When looking at the issue objectively, our Armed Forces and the Islamic Republic of Iran's Army are at a very favorable level. You are superior to other armies in terms of two things. First, your goal is a divine and human goal. Second, there is a strong heartfelt bond between you and the people. In order to provide security, tread the path of glory and achieve material and spiritual well-being, all societies and countries throughout the world are in need of power, and one important part of this power is provided by the armed forces in all societies and countries. The main difference lies in the fact that the paradigm of power in material systems - which is prevalent in today's world - is different from the paradigm of power in the Islamic system. In material systems, power rests on the foundations of material power - it is based on money, weaponry and deceptive and even hypocritical propaganda, if necessary. But in the Islamic and spiritual paradigm of power, this power is based primarily on spiritual factors and spiritual and divine values. It is based on faith. It is based on trust in Allah the Exalted. It is based on sincere efforts to achieve lofty ideals. This does not mean that we should ignore weapons. This does not mean that we should view discipline, weapons and training as insignificant. All these things are necessary, but the spirit of these things is the divine sense of responsibility, the feeling of reliance on Allah the Exalted. This is the factor which makes an army and a nation so strong that material powers become unable to bring them to their knees, and ultimate divine assistance and ultimate victory belong to that nation and army.

This is not just at the level of theory. This is not just an expression of our ambitious dreams. This is what we have experienced in practice. You dear youth can study these realties carefully in the recent history of the country. The victory of the Iranian nation in the face of the taghuti system is a perfect example of the triumph of spiritual factors over material factors. In this beloved and oppressed homeland, the taghuti, dependent and corrupt regime depended on different means of material power provided by international powers, but it was defeated by an unarmed nation that was equipped with faith and self-confidence.

The second experience is the one that the Iranian nation went through during the Sacred Defense Era. Both west and east were supporting the corrupt Ba'ath Party at that time. America was supporting it. NATO was supporting it. The U.S.S.R. was supporting it. Reactionary governments of the region were supporting it. They used to provide it with money. They used to provide it with weapons. They used to provide it with intelligence. They used to provide it with manpower. They were doing all of these things in order to defeat the Islamic Republic and the Iranian nation. But amid comprehensive sanctions, especially sanctions on weapons and military equipment, the Iranian nation managed to defeat the enemy that had a mountain of weapons and military equipment at its disposal by relying on its faith, the faith of its youth and the valor of its Armed Forces. The Iranian nation managed to obliterate all the money that had been showered on that taghuti regime.

The same is still true today. The world of arrogance has not yet found a way to confront Islamic Iran. They rely on material power and equip their friends and allies with weapons. Just see how much modern weaponry is exported to this region, how much money the countries of the region are spending on this weaponry and how much this profits the owners of military industries of America and the west. But their efforts are futile. "The unbelievers spend their wealth to hinder (man) from the path of Allah, and so will they continue to spend, but in the end they will have (only) regrets and sighs." [The Holy Quran, 8: 36] They spend all this money, but they will not benefit from it.

Relying on its religious faith, Islamic Iran managed to overtake others in the arena of material means as well. Of course the Air Force of the Islamic Republic of Iran's Army and its honorable martyrs - such as Shahid Sattari, Shahid Babai, Shahid Khazrai, Shahid Doran and many others - were pioneers on this path. The first institute for self-sufficiency jihad of the Armed Forces was established in the Air Force. Both flight crew and technical support crew created values in one way or another. The Islamic Republic will never forget these services. In this arena, the Army stood up. The Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution stood up. Different officials of the Armed Forces stood up. Universities helped, and scientists of the country cooperated. Today besides relying on its faith and spiritual values, the Iranian nation is relying on the material means that it has built on its own. This is a source of pride.

We want our youth to feel that they can rely on themselves and on the assistance of Allah the Exalted. We want them to feel that they can be independent of the arrogant powers of the world and that they can build Armed Forces that are equipped with the products of indigenous ideas and innovations. Look at everything from this perspective. Continue your studies with this principle in mind. Continue your research with this orientation. Rely on yourselves. This is the experience gained by you, your country and veteran members of the Islamic Republic of Iran's Army and the entire Armed Forces. When you rely on yourselves, your talents flow like an inexhaustible spring and offer their outcomes to you, your organization and your nation.

The report that was presented by the commander of this university was a good report. What he reported has been done in different areas, and this is good. But you should not be complacent about these things. The path of perfection is an endless path. The more you move ahead, the more you will experience the pleasure of perfection. This is true of material issues as well as spiritual virtues - such as closeness to God, attention to God, love for God and spirituality, and treading the divine path. The more you move ahead, the more powerful and delighted you will feel. This path is the path of you dear youth. The country belongs to you. The Army belongs to you. The future belongs to you. Study hard. Engage in research seriously. Try hard to gain experience.

Allah the Exalted has promised that He will assist you if you promote His religion, tread His path and seek divine goals. God's assistance means the assistance of the forces of nature - all of them will help you. Even supernatural forces will come to your aid. You will be assisted, and you will move ahead - just as you have up until today.

You should know that today your country is very different from 10 years ago and that it has made a lot of progress. It has made more progress compared to 20 years ago. It has made even more progress compared to the early years of the Revolution - thirty years ago. This progress is the result of the determined efforts of our nation, our people, our youth, their reliance on Allah the Exalted and their efforts on this holy path. Continue these efforts.

Universities affiliated to the Armed Forces are among the most promising social and scientific centers of this country. This university was named after Shahid Sattari - the honorable, hardworking, active, innovative, faithful and mujahid martyr. During the Sacred Defense Era, before he was appointed as an Air Force commander, Shahid Sattari made many valuable efforts without many people knowing. He also rendered a lot of services as a commander. Similarly, the rest of our dear martyrs - from the Ground Force, the Navy, the Air Force and different other parts of the Armed Forces - rendered great services. You should appreciate this university. The plans should always be up-to-date and forward-looking, and they should be clearly formulated. The honorable teachers should make as many efforts as they can. The dear students should try their hardest. The senior commanders should visit such universities and speak with these dear youth in person. This is beneficial both for them and for these youth. We become dynamic when we look at you dear youth, and you can benefit from the experience of the veterans.

Dear God, by the blessedness of Muhammad (s.w.a.) and his household, bestow Your grace and blessings on these dear youth. Dear God, bestow Your support and assistance on our Armed Forces, the Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution, the Islamic Republic of Iran's Army, the Police and the Basij.

Greetings be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings

Supreme Leader’s Speech to Executive Officials of Qom

Supreme Leader’s Speech to Executive Officials of Qom
27/10/2010

The following is the full text of the speech delivered by Ayatollah Khamenei on October 27, 2010 to executive officials of the city of Qom.

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all sentient beings, and peace and greetings upon our Master and Prophet, Ab-al-Qassem Al-Mustafa Muhammad, and upon his immaculate and infallible household, especially the one remaining with Allah on earth. Greetings be upon you Fatima Masoumeh, the daughter of Musa ibn Ja'far, and your immaculate, select and infallible ancestors.

I am very happy to have attended this highly enjoyable meeting with the sincere servants of the Iranian nation and the city of Qom. I would like to express my gratitude to the honorable cabinet members who have travelled to Qom in order to take actions for the development of Qom and improve the welfare of the dear people of Qom. I express my appreciation to the esteemed cabinet members who are present at the shrine of Hazrat Masoumeh (s.a.). I would also like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all you dear audience who are rendering services in different sectors, and I hope Allah the Exalted will bestow His grace on you and be satisfied with you. I hope you will manage to make these honorable, faithful and enthusiastic people feel truly satisfied with you.

The opportunity to render services is a great opportunity for anybody. From a divine perspective, serving human beings is in itself a value and a virtuous deed. If the people you serve enjoy such merits as faith, jihad and high motives for social movements, then serving those people becomes doubly valuable. And this is true of serving the people of Qom, the faithful people who emerged victorious out of the tests during the past decades whenever they were faced with heavy responsibilities. Serving these people is indeed a great blessing. You dear brothers and sisters should appreciate this blessing.

During the rule of taghut, the people of Qom were very unhappy. Being unhappy was because of the spiritual and genuine merits that the people of this city enjoyed - it was because of their piety, their close relationships with the clergy and the existence of a seminary in this city. The first yells to oppose the oppression of Reza Shah were voiced in the city of Qom. In order to counter the tyranny of Reza Shah at the beginning of his rule, the late Hajj Noorallah Isfahani selected Qom as his base. He travelled to Qom, and different ulama from different parts of the country gathered in Qom. Of course they were faced with suppression by the tyrannical Pahlavi regime, and the late Hajj Noorallah Isfahani was poisoned and martyred. After that, a pious religious scholar voiced his opposition to banning hijab from this holy shrine and attracted everybody's attention. Reza Shah travelled from Tehran to Qom and beat up that knowledgeable, pious, mujahid and spiritual man. The efforts to confront the Pahlavi regime enjoy such a record in Qom. Therefore, the fight against taghut did not start after the clerical movement in the year 1341. All these things caused the taghuti regime to treat Qom as an enemy. Therefore, Qom was deprived of development and construction. They did not allocate enough funds to Qom, and different facilities were lacking in this city. That is to say, the regime paid less attention to Qom than other parts of the country. Many of the needs of the people were ignored during the rule of the taghuti regime, and they did not consider the needs of the people. They had other things to do. But Qom was even more underprivileged than other cities. That was the situation of Qom.

After the Revolution, Qom received special attention. But as was reported - and I approve the accuracy of the report - the movement to construct and develop Qom has truly speeded up since five years ago. There has been a significant increase in this regard, and this is something valuable, but it should be continued. If the determination and enthusiasm of the esteemed government officials regarding the issues of Qom are continued, there is a hope that by Allah's favor the different kinds of historical backwardness will be gradually remedied, and this is important for the country. Serving Qom is not like serving any other city. Serving Qom is like serving the country and national honor. This is because Qom is the stronghold of the Revolution. It is the stronghold of the clergy. The biggest Islamic seminary is located in this city. Prominent scientific and religious figures are living in this city. Qom has the attention of the people of the world. For example, all propaganda machines of the world have focused their attention on Qom and the people and clergy of Qom during the past few days. This shows the importance of this city and its centrality. Therefore, serving this city is like serving the honor of the Islamic Republic.

The plan to undermine the symbol of the Revolution and Islam has been one of the plans pursued in the enemies' propaganda during the years after the Revolution. The plan is to undermine anything that is known on a national level as the symbol of Islam and the Revolution. Undermining the clergy and making fun of them belong in this category. Undermining many of the Islamic teachings, insulting them and efforts by different individuals to create doubts about them also belong in this category. Similarly, undermining Qom falls into this category as well.

They had plans for Qom. As I said yesterday in a meeting, the enemy had decided to create an anti-Revolution force in Qom, the city which was the stronghold for the greatness of Islam and for raising the flag of the Revolution. They were planning to turn Qom into a stronghold for fighting the Revolution. They made efforts and prepared plans to do this. They made use of different kinds of methods - including efforts to manipulate the minds of the people of Qom and their emotions in the hope that they would be able to eliminate or undermine these emotions. Therefore, a lot of efforts have been made during the past years.

If you see that these people's response to all these hostile efforts is so enthusiastic and impressive - the epic that the people of Qom created during the past few days - it is because of the vigilance of the people of Qom. And this is indicative of the depth of faith in their hearts, otherwise the enemy has not spared anything. A lot of attention is paid to Qom. It is necessary to neutralize these propaganda efforts, and it is possible to do so through rendering services to the people, helping the people and identifying the real problems of this city and its people. Therefore, my most important recommendation in today's meeting with you esteemed government officials is that you should make as many efforts as you can in order to serve these people and resolve the problems of their daily lives.

Of course our governmental organizations have limited resources. The facilities are not boundless. Therefore, things should be prioritized. This is always the case. It is necessary to see what the priorities are, and this itself is one of the priorities. I believe it is necessary to carefully list the important issues of the city of Qom - which are fortunately in the process of being addressed. The legislation that was passed today by the esteemed cabinet members as well as the legislation that was passed during the honorable President's trip to this city should all be carefully implemented. The esteemed government officials should try to pursue all this legislation to the end in a determined and careful manner. Thankfully preliminary efforts have been made during the past few years to address the issue of Qom's water - which is an essential and vital issue - and relatively good results have been achieved so far. But these determined efforts should be continued so that high-quality drinking water is supplied to the city of Qom.

The issue of underprivileged areas of Qom which was mentioned by the gentlemen who spoke here - both the governor and the esteemed deputy governor - is also very important: Both the areas that they named and the areas that they did not name. There are certain densely populated underprivileged areas in Qom whose people love the Revolution. A solution should be presented to address the root of the problem.

One of the issues of Qom is the issue of health care. During the few days I have spent in this city, different people have expressed their opinion through different channels regarding the city's need for more health care facilities. Of course decisions have been made to take certain measures, and hopefully they will be implemented, but determined efforts have to be made. I heard that one of the issues is health care for women, which I hope will be addressed.

The issue of Qom's handicrafts - which I mentioned on the first day of my trip - is important. When I was living in Qom and even before that, Qom was famous for the exquisite and valuable carpets produced in this city. This is a privilege of this city, and it is a very important privilege. I had heard about their carpets everywhere, and the women and men of Qom felt proud of the carpets they were producing. I am not sure if carpets that are produced in Qom are still as famous as they used to be at that time. Determined efforts should be made to address the issue of carpet weaving and other handicrafts. This can help the people of Qom benefit from within their own lives and prosper.

They mentioned the issue of industry. It was a very good point. Regarding the issue of Qom's agriculture, I heard that they are planning to channel water from Tehran and Varamin to the agricultural areas of Mesileh. This plan has been proposed by the government, and they have already made this decision. It is a very good measure, and it is very important. By Allah's favor, these things will be done. Thankfully, great achievements have been made by the current administration. As was mentioned, valuable things have been done by the ninth and tenth administrations - several times more than what had been done before. However, there are still other needs to be addressed. Some of the needs have already been addressed, but more efforts have to be made in order to completely address these needs. This is up to you.

One of the things that is very important is the way government officials - working at different levels - treat their clients and the people. Be polite and smile. Do not be part of the problem.

Sometimes certain government officials may not be able to do what they are expected to do. A governmental organization may lack funds and facilities. It may come up against an obstacle. But if the people are treated in a reasonably polite and friendly manner, they will feel satisfied. Sometimes people go to my office in Tehran. Some people make requests that cannot be granted by my office. People who work at my office say that they have received the request, but that they will not be able to do anything because it is against the law or because there are other problems. But the clients say that they are satisfied simply because their request has been considered although nothing has been done in practice. The people feel satisfied when government officials understand their problems and sympathize with them. Of course they must try to fulfill their needs as much as possible. As I said, the government has limited resources. It is not right to think that the government can freely do everything that is necessary. No, there are many limitations on different levels. But we should engage in as much action as we can, and we should do so politely and smilingly. We should treat the people in a friendly manner. This is one of the most important duties that lies on the shoulders of we government officials.

You honorable officials serving in different sectors - including educational sectors, service sectors, industrial sectors, agricultural sectors, cultural sectors, health sectors, security sectors and other sectors - should know that the financial compensation for the services you render are not the only reward that you will receive. Your services will be rewarded by God. The rewards that are offered by Allah the Exalted are far superior, far more valuable and far more enjoyable than the rewards and compensation that one receives in the material world - be it material rewards or appreciation. Sometimes we may do something and get appreciation from other people. This appreciation is a kind of compensation. But divine rewards are far superior to these things. Sometimes you render a service, do something out of compassion or stay longer than your normal hours of work to render services. Nobody may even notice what you have done, but God knows. This happens a lot, and I have met many individuals during the past 32 years who have done something out of compassion without anybody knowing - without even their bosses, subordinates or colleagues knowing. They have read a file or pursued something outside their normal hours of work. They have decided to stay a half hour or an hour longer and finish what they were doing. Nobody has ever found out about what they did, and nobody has ever thanked them. You should know that these things will be recorded by God. Even if nobody notices, the angels that are responsible for recording our actions will notice whatever we do. They will record our actions. The day on which every eye and heart will be in need of God's mercy, favor and grace, these things will be a source of hope. On the hard and dreadful Day of Judgment, these things will provide you with a shade. Therefore, divine rewards are far superior. Pay attention to these divine rewards. You should know that everything you do and every service you render will be recorded by Allah the Exalted. When you work like this, you do not get tired of work and your work does not wear you down. This is especially true because our country is genuinely in need of labor. We need to move forward swiftly in all areas.

In scientific areas, they kept us backward for a period of 100-150 years. The same is true of industrial areas as well as different social areas. Similarly, corrupt, tyrannical, immoral, greedy and dependant governments wreaked havoc on this country during the few decades before the Revolution. One day it was only tyranny and dictatorship - such as the tyranny of Nasser al-Din Shah and the tyranny of Fath Ali Shah - but there was no dependence. However, there was also a day when the situation of this country got so bad that tyranny was accompanied by serving foreigners and bullying and pressuring the people. The bullying Reza Shah - who used to attack the people like a ferocious wolf - provided as many privileges for his English masters as they wanted. He grabbed the petroleum contract and threw it into the fireplace, but a few days later he signed a worse and more disgraceful contract for a longer period of time. In the new contract he added 30 years to the period of the previous contract and handed it to them. His government officials were his yes-men. After Reza Shah was dethroned, Taqizadeh - who was the minister of finance during Reza Shah's rule - was asked why he signed that contract, and he replied that he was only a tool in Reza Shah's hand. The man who used to treat his own people so violently, insolently, inconsiderately and cruelly was humble to the English. It was the English who had brought him to power. For some time he tried to detach himself from the English and connect to another source of power. He developed a tendency towards the Germans. But he was removed from power soon after that. They expelled him out of Iran like a worthless slave. They removed him from power and installed his son in his place.

Our country was in this situation for many years. Our people were living under the pressure of corrupt, tyrannical and greedy governments for many years. Reza Shah grabbed the ownership of any developed piece of land in all parts of the country - in Mazandaran, in Khorasan and in many other parts of the country. They accumulated wealth. They accumulated property. They accumulated jewelry for themselves. At the end, they fled from the country and took some of our national wealth with them. Billions of dollars that belong to this nation are currently in the US. At the beginning of the Revolution, we demanded America to return the money that the Pahlavi family had taken to the US. They did not listen, and it was clear that they would not listen. They are all cut from the same cloth.

Thanks to the Revolution, this nation started to think of changing the course of its life, and it started treading this path and accomplished great achievements. But there are greater things to be done. There are many things to be done in the country in scientific, technical, service and organizational areas. No amount of work you do is too much for this nation - this is my advice to you.

Once again I would like to express my gratitude to all you dear officials of this city - the esteemed governor and different other government officials. Now I wish to repeat the point that I made on the first day of my trip to this city. Governmental organizations should be vigilant. If there is disagreement among them over a certain issue, they should not let this disagreement harm the people in the end. They should take care not to let their disagreement touch the people.

Greetings be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings

Supreme Leader’s Speech to Students and Youth of Qom

Supreme Leader’s Speech to Students and Youth of Qom
26/10/2010

The following is the full text of the speech delivered in Qom by Ayatollah Khamenei the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution on October 26, 2010 to a group of university students and youth of Qom.

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all sentient beings, and peace and greetings be upon our Master and Prophet, Ab-al-Qassem Al-Mustafa Muhammad, and upon his immaculate and infallible household, especially the one remaining with Allah on earth. Greetings be upon you Fatima Masoumeh, the daughter of Musa ibn Ja'far, and your immaculate, select and infallible ancestors.

Meeting with you dear youth in the last few days of the long trip is like a refreshing start. Youthful emotions, youthful thoughts, youthful spirits and youthful motives affect all environments and atmospheres. One of the reasons why the general atmosphere of the country is full of determination, enthusiasm and rationality is that the youth make up a major portion of the population of our country. And this meeting is truly a meeting for the youth.

I have memories about the youth of Qom. I also have a lot of information about them. Although there are a number of youth among the students of Qom who come from other cities, the majority of the students who have attended this meeting are from Qom. Before the political activities of the years 1341 and 1342 were in full swing, I had observed signs of vigilance and cleverness among the youth of Qom. I will never forget that at the beginning of Haram Alley or on the other side of the street - Arg Alley - there was a newspaper stand. They used to put the newspapers there for the people to see. When we were returning from school, we used to stop there and look at the headlines of the newspapers. When the taghuti regime was forced to retreat in the case of the bill related to election regulations [the elimination of Islam from the list of preconditions required of the candidates and the vetting body] and decided to revoke it, the youth who lived around Haram Alley and Eram Street came to me and offered their congratulations on the success of the clergy against the taghuti regime. I had seen those youth many times, and I had no idea they were involved in political thoughts and issues. The youth of Qom who appeared to be detached from political issues came to seminarians like me and offered their congratulations although we did not know each other at all.

I wondered what kind of spirit made the youth of Qom so sensitive to the issue of political activities, the political movement and the fight between the clergy and the taghuti regime. There were no university students living in Qom at that time. There were only unemployed youth, high school students and other youth who were not students.

Afterwards, when the events of the year 1356 took place, Qom revealed its true capacities. Qom started leading the public movement in the streets, presence in different arenas and resistance against the cruel iron fists of the regime. All the youth of Qom took to the streets and their blood was shed in the streets. Of course they really annoyed the agents of the taghuti regime. The cleverness and playful actions of the youth of Qom truly confused the agents of the regime.

And then the Revolution took place. Qom was among the pioneers everywhere. The Ali ibn Abi Talib Army was one of the successful armies during the Sacred Defense Era, and it was a pioneer. The people of Qom were successful in all great trials, and their youth were in the vanguard. I want you dear youth - you who have emotions, thoughts, dynamism and understanding - to constantly remember the glorious record of the young generation of Qom during the past few decades.

The people of Qom played a role in the Revolution. They played a role in the Sacred Defense. After the war, especially after our magnanimous Imam (r.a.) passed away, the youth of Qom played even a more prominent role. This is an important point.

Pay attention to the fact that ever since the latter part of the first decade of the Revolution the enemies of the Revolution and the camp of the enemy formulated a policy with the help of Iranian experts. This was because nobody other than Iranian experts would have been able to formulate such a policy. The people they consulted were definitely Iranian. The policy was to turn Qom into an anti-Revolution force. The plan was to turn Qom into an anti-revolutionary. Qom was the place where the Revolution was initiated. Qom is the center of the clergy. Qom Seminary is geographically located in Qom, but its seminarians are essentially spread out in the entire country. The seminarian who lives in Qom is influential in the city or village he comes from. Seminarians have gathered here from different parts of the country. When the members of Qom Seminary go on vacation or return home to do something, Qom Seminary is in fact spread out in the entire country. Therefore, any thought, any idea, any determination, any movement and any orientation that exist here are in fact spread out in the entire country.

Foreigners do not understand this. The Americans could not have inferred this truth. Only an insider - an Iranian, somebody who was familiar with the nature of the clergy - could have understood this truth. They taught this to foreigners. Thus, they tried to prepare the ground for a fitna in Qom. Because I do not want to mention names, I will just continue without mentioning any names. In the years 1358 and 1359, both the people of Qom and the people of Tabriz gave rise to an epic. It was not just an epic of entering the arena with clenched fists, but it was also an epic of spirituality, understanding and appropriate analysis. After the Imam (r.a.) passed away, the same event happened in another form in Qom. The opponents and the enemies had designed a plot to create an anti-Revolution force in Qom. The majority of these enemies were outside the country: They are the main enemies. If the people of Qom had not been vigilant, if the youth of Qom had been incapable of appropriate analysis, if they had not been clever enough, we would have faced far more problems than we currently do. This is the truth. This is a realistic description of the youth of Qom.

I address many of the points to you dear youth, and this is especially true of the points I will raise today. This is because everything is up to you, and the country belongs to you. People like me will be among you for a short time. Our time and share of work is over. From now on it is your turn. It is you who should manage this country. You should help this national power and dignity - which has been obtained through different achievements - reach perfection. This is a duty in the history of our country that lies on your shoulders. Therefore, you are the ones I am addressing.

If we accept that the camp of the enemy has prepared long-term plans for our country and our Revolution, then we must prepare long-term plans as well. We cannot accept that the camp of the enemies of Islam and the Revolution - which has been seriously threatened by Islamic Awakening - lacks long-term plans. Nobody can believe this unless they are extremely naïve and unaware. The enemies definitely have long-term plans. There are events that take place in the country from time to time in which foreigners clearly have a hand. These events do not just happen without anybody being involved. They happen as a result of their medium-term and long-term plans. The events are the result of their planning. It is not the case that they suddenly decide to do something, and they take action the following day. No, I showed some proof and evidence to some of the friends regarding the fitna of the year 1388 - they had prepared plans since at least 10-15 years earlier. They had prepared plans since after the demise of the Imam (r.a.). The effect of those plans revealed itself in the year 1378, including the events that happened at the Tehran University dormitory and the other events that most of you remember. Some people may not remember those events clearly. The events that happened last year revived those plans. Of course they tried to do this after taking the timing and different aspects of the issue into consideration. Thankfully they were defeated, and they must have been defeated. Therefore, the camp of the enemy has long-term plans. They will not lose hope. They will not give up just because they were defeated on a certain occasion. No, they will design plans for the next 10 years, the next 20 years, the next 40 years. You should be prepared.

We should have long-tem plans. Of course such meetings are not appropriate for proposing long-term plans. It is intellectual, political and cultural centers that should go after and do these kinds of things, and they are doing so. What I can say in this meeting is that the ground is essentially prepared for long-term plans, and I have repeatedly emphasized this point. I deem it necessary to briefly speak about the issue of acquiring insight.

During the recent years I have spoken a lot about the issue of acquiring insight. Other people have also made many points. I noticed that some of our youth have taken good actions in this regard. I would like to re-emphasize the issue of insight. I emphasize insight in order to encourage you - as the ones who are in the arena and are responsible for taking action - to go after the measures and plans that are related to acquiring insight and fulfill this important need. Insight is a beacon of guidance. It is a compass. If you travel through a desert without a compass, you may get somewhere by accident, but it is unlikely. What is more likely to happen is that you will face a lot of trouble due to wandering and confusion. You need a compass, especially when you are faced with an enemy. If you do not have a compass, you might suddenly find yourself surrendered by the enemy while you are unprepared. Then you will not be able to do anything. Therefore, insight is a compass and a beacon of guidance. Insight can provide you with light in a dark place. It can show you the way.

Of course for ultimate success, insight is a necessary condition, but it is not sufficient. There are other requirements for success. Hopefully, I will briefly speak about this in the end if there is time and my memory does not fail me. However, insight is a necessary condition. Even if all the other conditions are met, it will be very difficult to achieve success and reach your goal in the absence of insight.

Insight can be defined on two levels. One level is the layer of principles, the underlying level. In selecting a world view and developing an essential understanding of monotheistic concepts, one acquires a kind of insight through a monotheistic view of nature. The difference between a monotheistic view and a materialistic view is that this world is considered systematic, orderly and purposeful from a monotheistic perspective. And we are part of this nature, and our existence and life are purposeful. We did not come to this world without a purpose. This is a necessary condition for the monotheistic world view. This is the meaning of faith in the existence of the All-Powerful and All-Knowing God. When we realize there is a purpose behind our existence, then we start to search for that purpose. This search itself is a hopeful effort. We try to find that purpose. And after we realize what the purpose is, we start making efforts in order to achieve that purpose. In this case, all our life becomes making efforts, purposeful and goal-oriented efforts.

On the other hand, we know that from a monotheistic perspective any kind of goal-oriented effort will definitely help one achieve results. There are degrees of achievement, but favorable results will undoubtedly be achieved. From this perspective, despair, disappointment and frustration will be meaningless in one's life. When you know that there is a purpose behind your existence, your creation, your life and your breathing, you go after that purpose and make efforts in order to achieve that purpose. From the viewpoint of Allah the Exalted who is the Creator of this world, even these efforts deserve rewards. You have achieved your goal as long as you make efforts, no matter where your efforts get you. This is why in a monotheistic world view loss is unimaginable for faithful people. "Can you expect for us (any fate) other than one of two glorious things - (martyrdom or victory)?" [The Holy Quran, 9: 52] Two of the best things are awaiting us. We will either be martyred on this path, which is the best, or we will remove the enemy from our path and achieve the goal, which is also the best. Therefore, there is no loss on this path.

The materialistic view is the exact opposite of this. According to the materialistic view, there is no purpose behind the existence of man. A materialist has no idea why he came into being. Of course he may define some goals for himself - gaining money, achieving love, obtaining a social position and attaining physical and scientific pleasures. A materialist can set himself such goals. However, none of these are natural goals of life that accompany his existence. When there is no faith in God, ethics and justice become meaningless. Nothing but pleasure and personal gains becomes meaningful. If a materialist faces a problem on the way to personal gains, he considers it a loss. If he fails to achieve personal gains and if he cannot continue his efforts, then he become disappointed and hopeless and starts to think of suicide and other irrational things. This is the difference between the monotheistic view and materialistic view, between divine knowledge and material knowledge. This is one of the most essential foundations of insight.

From a monotheistic point of view, when you engage in a fight, the fight is a holy struggle. The same is true of an armed fight. Basically, fighting is not based on suspicion or malevolence. Rather, the purpose of this fight is to help humanity achieve goodness, perfection, welfare and growth. From this perspective, life is beautiful, and moving on in this vast arena is enjoyable. Your tiredness is relieved through remembrance of Allah the Exalted and keeping the goal in mind. This is the essential foundation of knowledge - it is the essential basis of insight. This insight is extremely necessary, and we need to achieve it. Insight is in fact the basis of all human efforts and struggles in society. This is one level of insight.

One may suffer from lack of insight in different events. It is necessary to gain insight. What is the meaning of this insight? What does gaining insight mean? In what ways can one gain insight? The kind of insight which is necessary in different events and which has been emphasized in Islamic narrations and in the statements of the Commander of the Faithful (a.s.) means that one should reflect on the events that happen or will happen around one. It means that one should try not to pass over different events in a careless and superficial way. As the Commander of the Faithful (a.s.) said, "One should think and act on the basis of one's thought." That is to say, one should evaluate issues in a reflective manner and gain insight out of this evaluation. One should consider events in an appropriate manner. Appropriate evaluation and reflecting on the evaluation help create insight in human beings. That is to say, evaluation and reflection open one's eyes to the truth.

Elsewhere in Nahjul Balaghah, the Commander of the Faithful (a.s.) says, "An insightful person is one who listens and then thinks, one who looks and then perceives." An insightful person is one who does not shut his ears to different voices, and when he has listened, he should think. One cannot accept or reject something just because one has listened to it. It is necessary to think about it. "An insightful person is one who listens and then thinks, one who looks and then perceives." It means that one should not close one's eyes. The problem with many of the people who slipped and fell into the pitfalls of lack of insight was that they did not look and they closed their eyes to a clear truth. It is necessary to look first, and then one will be able to see. Sometimes we are not even prepared to look at certain things. We have seen some twisted people who are not even prepared to look. I am not speaking about spiteful enemies. I will speak about these enemies later on: "And they denied them unjustly and proudly while their soul had been convinced of them." [The Holy Quran, 27: 14] There are some people who have ulterior motives and step in with their grudges. After all, an enemy is an enemy, and it is a different matter. You and I who are in this arena are the ones I am speaking about. If we want to gain insight, we have to open up our eyes. We have to look. There are certain things that can be seen. If we pass over them in a superficial and careless way, if we fail to see them, we will naturally make mistakes.

I would like to provide an example from history. In the Battle of Siffin, Muawiyah's army came very close to being defeated. His army was very close to being crushed. The trick that they thought up to save themselves was that they put copies of the Holy Quran on spearheads and marched to the battlefield. They put pages of the Holy Quran on spears and walked to the middle of the battlefield, suggesting that both sides of the war should let the Holy Quran be the judge between them. They said, "Let us do as the Quran says." It was a good trick that had mass appeal. A number of people in Imam Ali's army - who later on formed a group called Khawarij and drew their swords to fight the Commander of the Faithful (a.s.) - started to think the enemy was making a good suggestion. They thought, "What these people are saying is not bad. They are just saying that we should let the Quran be the judge." You see, this was where they were deceived. They slipped because they did not watch where they were stepping. If they wanted to know the truth, it was right in front of their eyes. The person inviting other people to accept the Holy Quran as the judge was one who was fighting against an Imam - an Imam who had been selected by God and sanctioned as a leader whom other people had to obey. How can such a person have faith in the Holy Quran?

We believe the Commander of the Faithful, Ali ibn Abi Talib (a.s.), had been appointed by the Holy Prophet (s.w.a.), but even those who did not accept this agreed that the people had pledged allegiance to him after the third caliph and accepted his caliphate. He became the leader. The Islamic community had a religious obligation to be obedient to him. It was the duty of all Muslims to confront anybody who drew his sword to fight him. If the person who put pages of the Holy Quran on spears really believed in the Book, the Holy Quran asks, "Why are you fighting Imam Ali (a.s.)?" If he really believed in the Holy Quran, he should have put his hands up and said, "I am not fighting this war." He should have dropped his sword. They should have seen this. They should have understood this. Was it too difficult to understand? Was it too complicated? They were just negligent. That was an instance of lack of insight. If they had thought a little carefully, they would have realized this truth. This was because they were among the companions of the Commander of the Faithful (a.s.) in Medina. They had seen that the agents and assistants of Muawiyah had played a role in the murder of Othman. They had contributed to the murder of Othman, yet they held up his bloody clothes and demanded revenge. It was them who had murdered Othman. It was their fault, but they were looking for another culprit. This lack of insight is the result of lack of care. It is the result of failing to watch out. It is the result of closing one's eyes to a clear truth.

During the events that resulted from the recent fitna, a number of people made a mistake, which was because of their lack of insight. Claims were made that a great and impressive election had been rigged. There is an obvious way to settle this issue. If somebody believes that an electoral fraud has taken place, he should first present reasons. First of all, he should present evidence in support of his claims of fraud. Second, the law has specified a legal channel, irrespective of whether or not he presents evidence. He can complain legally. It is necessary to investigate and review the issue. Impartial individuals should investigate and see if there has been a fraud or not. This is the right way. I helped them a lot. I personally extended the legal period for complaining. I even suggested that they themselves come and recount the votes in front of TV cameras. If somebody does not accept this legal channel, he is being obstinate. [Audience shouting slogans] Please listen. My purpose is not to express my opinion about past events. I just want to provide an example. Therefore, acquiring insight is not something difficult.

If you see that there is a logical legal channel. But when somebody defies that logical legal channel and does something that harms the country and works against national interests, it is clear that he should be condemned from a fair, conventional and impartial perspective. This is something obvious, an obvious judgment call. Therefore, insight is not an impossible and difficult demand. It is not difficult to acquire insight. Acquiring insight only requires that one avoid different pitfalls, including friendships, enmities, passions and prejudgments. If one just looks and reflects on things, one can discover the truth. The demand to have insight is just limited to this level of reflection. It just requires a look, nothing more. Thus, one can conclude that acquiring insight is something that anybody can do. Everybody can acquire insight. Of course some people are just careless sometimes, and their lack of insight is not rooted in spite or malevolence. In spite of the fact that people really love their lives, sometimes they may doze off or fail to pay attention for a moment when driving, and a tragic event may happen as a result. Such mistakes cannot be considered as sins. But if they keep happening, it is lack of insight and is no longer acceptable.

Today the main efforts of the enemy in its soft war are focused on creating confusion in the political atmosphere of the country. Pay attention to this point. This is the most important thing that the enemy is doing today. Those who know about political work and issues are aware that today the power of the superpowers is mainly based on the power of their propaganda rather than their atomic bombs and the wealth accumulated in their banks. And they know methods of propaganda really well. In all fairness, they have achieved good advances in propaganda work. Today westerners - both in America and in Europe - have learnt modern and highly advanced methods of propaganda. We are behind in this regard. One of the most essential things that they know is how to broadcast propaganda. Through these methods of propaganda, through creation of uproar and through promoting a multitude of false ideas, they try to influence the atmosphere of different societies and transform them. It is necessary to pay attention to this point. It is necessary to be vigilant. Today our youth have to shoulder a heavy duty in this regard. Not only should you indentify the truth, but you should also promote insight in the environment in which you live and clarify things to the people around you.

One essential point is that falsity does not always appear in a bare form in front of your eyes, and it is not easy to identify it as falsity. Falsities often enter the arena disguised as truths or half-truths. The Commander of the Faithful (a.s.) said that if the truth and falsity entered the arena in a bare form, there would be no disagreements. "The basis of the occurrence of evils is those desires which are acted upon and religious decrees that are innovated. They are against the Book of Allah. People cooperate with each other about them even though it is against the Religion of Allah. If falsity had been pure and unmixed, it would not be hidden from those who are in search of it. And if the truth had been pure without a mixture of falsity, those who bear hatred towards it would have been silenced." Everybody likes the truth and hates falsity. "However what is done is that something is taken from here and something from there and the two are mixed, making the truth doubtful to those who seek it." They mix up the truth with falsity and do not let falsity be bare and pure. Thus, they mislead their audience. It is necessary to be extremely vigilant in this regard. In global propaganda, today all efforts are focused on complete distortion of the realities of your society and your Islamic government. And they have many propaganda facilities to do this. They are busy working all the time. Of course there are some people who - knowingly or unknowingly - repeat and reflect their statements inside the country.

There is a point in this regard. Sometimes there is insight, yet mistakes are repeatedly made. As I said, insight is not a sufficient condition for success. It is only a necessary condition. There are other factors involved. One is the issue of lack of determination. Some people know the realities, but they fail to make a decision and take action. They do not make up their mind to express what they know. They do not make up their mind to adopt the righteous position and defend the truth. Of course there are certain reasons why they do not make up their mind. Sometimes it is because of their laziness. Other times they just do not want to get involved. Sometimes their indecision is because of their passions. Other times it is because of carnal desires. Sometimes their indecision is out of consideration for their personal interests. Yet other times it is due to obstinacy. Sometimes just because one has made a certain comment, one may want to repeat the same thing persistently and may feel ashamed of taking back one's comment. "May Allah curse obstinate people." There are some people who know the truth, yet they contribute to the enemies' positions. Many of the people who got cold feet and gave up used to be extremist revolutionaries one day. But you see now that they are standing for exactly the opposite of what they used to stand for and are serving the anti-revolutionaries. This is because of the factors I mentioned - because of passions, carnal desires and being submerged in material demands. And the main factor is failing to remember God, neglecting one's duties and ignoring death and the Day of Judgment. These things cause people to make a U-turn on their positions.

Of course some people may make a mistake. It is not right to consider everybody a culprit. I saw some people giving them money as a gift, as a sign of respect. And they accepted the money without realizing that they were being bribed. The things that happen in the real world are similar to one another, but it is important to realize whether or not something is a bribe. When you are in a position of power and can do something the way a person wants, that person may naturally come and kiss your hand or offer you money. Well, this is called bribing, which is haraam.

The same is true of the events of the fitna. Some people got involved in that fitna and uproar and did not realize that it was an effort to overthrow the government. They did not realize that they were involved in the kind of fitna about which the Commander of the Faithful (a.s.) said, "Through them Satan's emblems got flying and his standard was raised in vices which trampled the people under their hoofs, and treaded upon them with their feet." Fitna crushes and annihilates those who are in its way. They did not realize that it was a fitna. Somebody said something, and they repeated it. Therefore, it is not right to hand out the same punishment to everybody. The punishment of a warring enemy is different from the punishment of an unaware person. Of course unaware people should be awakened.

What I want to tell you dear youth is that you should be vigilant, be present on the scene and base your actions on insight in order to be able to build Islamic Iran, fulfill your duties towards Islam and make your nation, your dear homeland and your history glorious. Today if somebody makes efforts for the glory of Islamic Iran, he has served his homeland, his nation, his history and dear Islam which is a source of salvation for humanity. Take care not to suffer from lack of insight.

Try to identify the enemy. Do not let the appearance of the enemy deceive you. Materialism, materialistic tendencies, materialistic thought and materialistic civilization are your enemies and the enemies of humanity. The western world achieved superior knowledge and technology two to three centuries ago, and it found a way to accumulate wealth. Different social schools were created. Different philosophical and social thoughts came into being - liberalism which was based on humanistic thought, democracy and similar other things. The purpose of these schools and those who went after them was to enable humanity to achieve welfare and well-being, but what happened was exactly the opposite of this. Not only did humanity not achieve human qualities and well-being under humanistic schools of thought and humanistic systems, but this era also witnessed the largest number of wars and killings, the worst instances of animosity and the most hideous behaviors towards man.

In this regard those who were more advanced were worse. Yesterday I read in a newspaper that according to American sources the US carried out 80 coups in the world from 1940s to 1990s - that is to say, within fifty years. You see the brutality of those who have achieved the peaks of wealth, technology, weapons, manufacture of military equipment and different other things. Murder is something ordinary for them. They kill "in cold blood" - this phrase is in western literature. This is a sign of complete cruelty. This is the case not only in Afghanistan, Iraq and other places they have occupied, but also in their own country. Go to their literature, which shows the realities of their life. Their art and literature shows what is happening in their lives. Murder is extremely easy for them. On the other hand, in their communities and among their youth, one can see depression, disappointment with life and revolt against social norms. The kind of clothes and make-up they wear are often rooted in the fact that their youth are frustrated with the dominant atmosphere. These are what have been experienced by western systems and schools of thought. And these are all caused by the fact that they have drifted away from religion, spirituality and God. Therefore, their behavior is the enemy of humanity.

Today you are moving in the opposite direction. You want to achieve knowledge through divine thought. You want to make use of natural and human facilities in order to bring about material and spiritual benefits for your nation, other nations and humanity. Your orientation is divine. This movement will achieve success. It will continue. This movement is the opposite of the wrong and misguided two- or three-century-long movement started by the west. This movement is an auspicious movement, and it will continue.

Faithful Iranian youth should remain prepared. They should equip themselves. They should rely on Allah the Exalted on the way towards progress. They should ask God for assistance. They should move forward with insight. Then they will gain the appropriate means to confront the wrong methods that are prevalent in the world, and by Allah's favor, they will achieve all the ideals and wishes delineated by Islam and the Revolution.

Greetings be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings

Basij, a bright and exceptional reality

Basij, a bright and exceptional reality
2010/11/25 - 19:56

Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei in a large gathering of Basiji forces Thursday on the auspicious Eid al-Qadir ceremonies said the Eid was a symbolic day for justice and prosperity of mankind, adding that divine promises would come true for the faithful Iranian nation once it boosts its sincerity and political insight.

110,000 Basiji forces joined the ceremonies held on the eve of Basij day in the Iranian calendar.

Ayatollah Khamenei congratulated the Eid al-Qadir to all Muslims and said that the theme of the Islamic holiday belonged to anyone who has a concern for human prosperity.

Ayatollah Khamenei said Imam Ali, whom the messenger assigned in the Qadir event as his successor, was an exceptional personality in different individual, social and military spheres.

Ayatollah Khamenei then touched on the issue of Imamat (guardianship of ummah by Imam) and said Imamat, in general sense, is that an individual or a group take the steers of a society and direct it. Ayatollah Khamenei added that in view of the Koran, both good and evil people have their own Imam who directs them in their path of choice.

Ayatollah Khamenei noted that even in the most secular regimes of the world, unlike their claims of separation of religion and politics, both the worldly and the afterworld related affairs of people are in control of the rulers.

Ayatollah Khamenei in the same regard called the large cultural centers in the west as such leaders that direct people towards the hell of corruption.

Ayatollah Khamenei then turned to the issue of Basij and called it an exceptional and bright reality, adding that the enemy efforts to downplay the reality and insult the Basij are fruitless.

Ayatollah Khamenei called the Basij as a systematized and organized association which outnumbers any social force in the world and at the same time takes boost from faith and affection.

The IR Leader urged the nation to honor the social force, adding that the social force has made a good performance in various social and scientific fields, not to mention the defensive forefront. In the same regard, Ayatollah Khamenei said sincerity towards God and political insight were two pillars of the Basij movement, adding that the more one polishes his or her sincerity in his practices, the more God would deepen his or her political insight.

In another part of his speech, Ayatollah Khamenei called the Iranian nation's revolution as an effort to change the hell-ward track of the materialistic world, adding that a major fraction of the world population has picked the truths of the Iranian revolution unlike the superpowers's drive to join ranks against the nation and its awakening call.

Ayatollah Khamenei noted however that the divine promises would come true once the force of arrogance and despotism and the force of Islamic Revolution confront one another, adding that enemies would set up challenges in the path of the Iranian nation towards its bright future and that the nation must keep and bolster its preparedness.

Ayatollah Khamenei noted that the key to success of the Iranian nation was to keep up to date and bolster its sincerity and political insight. He expressed hope that one day the Iranian nation would stand atop peaks of prosperity and salvation, calling on other nations to join its sublime position.

Supreme Leader’s Speech to Students

Supreme Leader’s Speech to Students
03/11/2010

The following is the full text of the speech delivered by Ayatollah Khamenei on November 3, 2010 to a group of students. The speech was delivered in Tehran on the occasion of the 13th of Aban, Students' Day.

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

The 13th of Aban belongs to the most prominent people of our country - our youth - more than anybody else. And this gathering, which is a sample of the young population of this divine country, is filled with knowledge and insight as well as enthusiasm about great revolutionary wishes and ideals. Meeting you dear youth, my dear children, is one of the most pleasant occasions for me. This is an opportunity for me to discuss the issues that should be discussed between you and I.

Historical occasions are often like a symbol. In and of itself, the 13th of Aban is not different from the days before and after it, but it is a symbol. What is a symbol? A symbol is a code that contains many meanings. Sometimes a single word that you say contains a multitude of meanings and realities. The 13th of Aban is one of those things. This day is a symbol, and it contains a huge number of important points and issues, issues that are not at all historical. Rather, they are considered among our current issues. Let us take a look at the occasions that the 13th of Aban represents.

The first occasion that the 13th of Aban represents is the day when our magnanimous Imam (r.a.) was forced into exile in the year 1343. Why did they force him into exile? Because the Imam (r.a.) had demanded a national right a few days before in a speech delivered in Qom, which was immediately distributed throughout the country on audio tape and in writing. That national right was the annulling of the oppressive legal immunity [granted to American soldiers]. It is appropriate for our young generation to clearly understand what difficulties we have undergone to reach where we are now.

Americans had tens of thousands of agents in Iran. The exact number is not important - fifty thousand, sixty thousand or more. They were political, security and military agents. They were among the people who used to manage Iran - in the army, in intelligence organizations, planning centers and different other places. They used to charge the Iranian government several times more, but they used to work for America. This was a bad thing that happened in our country. Because it was dependent on America and acted as an American mercenary, the satanic Pahlavi regime had gradually allowed those agents to enter the country over a number of years. This was already bad enough, but what happened next was even worse: They approved a law in the parliament of that time, which granted immunity to American agents so that they could not be prosecuted by Iranian courts, judiciary and security organizations. This is called legal immunity. When foreigners are allowed to enter a country and do whatever they like, when the courts and police force of a country are unable to do anything to stop foreigners, it shows that the country is suffering from an extreme form of weakness and dependence. Legal immunity was what the Americans demanded from the satanic Pahlavi regime, and it was given to them on a silver platter.

Of course they used to do these things quietly. They did not let the press reflect them. But the Imam (r.a.) found out what they were doing. Before the 13th of Aban, in a speech delivered to the people and seminarians of Qom, Imam Khomeini (r.a.) voiced his objection to the legal immunity of American agents. He said that if a low-ranking American agent insulted and stomped on an Iranian marja taqlid in the country and committed whatever crime he wished, the Iranian legal system would remain totally neutral and nobody would have the right to stop him. It was only Americans who could have taken action against him, and it is clear what the action would have been. The Imam (r.a.) raised his objection to that oppressive law. He had just been released from prison at that time. He had finished serving his months-long sentence a few months earlier. He stood up and made the suppressed voice of the Iranian people heard. Of course many people did not even know that the Iranian people were being humiliated like that, but the Imam (r.a.) knew that. This is how a genuine guardian of a country's interests acts. When he finds out what is being done to his people, how they are humiliated and how their honor is trampled underfoot, he does not stay silent. He yells his objection. At that time even yelling was considered dangerous. Therefore, they arrested the Imam (r.a.) immediately and transferred him to Tehran. They did not even keep him in Iran. They exiled him to Turkey. This is the first occasions that the 13th of Aban represents.

Therefore, the 13th of Aban became the symbol of two great realities, two sensitive and momentous realities. One is the greed of the Americans: If a nation fails to defend its rights and honor, arrogant and colonial powers will even impose such oppressive laws as legal immunity on that nation. This is the goal of the hegemony of the arrogant powers. The relations between a government such as the US government and a country that does not have as much power as America cannot be like relations between two ordinary countries. No, from the viewpoint of the Americans themselves, the relations between America and what they call "third world countries" is a master-subject relationship - the Americans being the master, and third world countries being their subjects. The Americans think they have the right to do whatever they want in third world countries. They think they can plunder third world countries' oil and gas resources, act against their interests, take away their wealth, promote American interests and humiliate their people.

An American sergeant used to slap senior Iranian officers across the face, and nobody had the right to react. In different garrisons of the country, when a low-ranking member of the American military faced a senior Iranian officer, he used to address the Iranian officer like a master. The members of our army were dissatisfied with this situation, but they did not dare to do anything. The first point is that the 13th of Aban is the symbol of American arrogance. It is the symbol of the spirit of transgression of the arrogant powers against different nations, especially against the Iranian nation.

After the victory of the Islamic Revolution, different American presidents tried to ingratiate themselves [with the Islamic Republic]. They flattered us a lot in the hope that they will manage to reopen the path that was closed to them. Their statements are the surface of things. But, as I said, the truth of the situation is similar to the iron fist which is covered with a velvet glove.

Therefore, the 13th of Aban is reminiscent of a bitter and crucial truth - namely, the spirit of arrogance that is inherent in the arrogant powers and arrogant hegemony. Different nations throughout the world - including our nation - should never forget this. They should know that what they are confronted with is the face of an aggressor and the face of transgressor who is planning to march forward and stomp on the honor of peoples, sexually harass them, transgress on their lands, threaten their lives and jeopardize their wealth without anybody being able to hold them responsible and ask them for an explanation.

The second thing that is represented by the 13th of Aban is the resonant yell of our magnanimous Imam (r.a.). That shout was one of the most immaculate and wholesome shouts, which came out of one of the most immaculate throats. Some people may make a criticism or raise an objection here and there, but the shout that spread the message of the 13th of Aban throughout the world in the year 1343 came out of one of the most immaculate throats. First of all, this shout was rooted in a sense of religiosity. Second, it was rooted in national and Islamic pride. The Imam (r.a.) could not tolerate the domination of the enemy over this nation. Third, the shout depended on public support. As I said, although the people were unaware in the beginning, they supported the Imam (r.a.) when they heard his shout. It was that public support which led to the victory of the Islamic Revolution 14 years later. That immaculate shout was similar to the resonant shouts with which divine prophets used to call the people to God and attract their hearts. The Imam (r.a.) carried out such a great movement in the country, and he paid the price for it. They forced the Imam (r.a.) out of his home and separated him from his family, friends and relatives. They exiled him to another part of the world. Therefore, the second point is that the 13th of Aban is the symbol of such a shout.

The third thing which is represented by the 13th of Aban is what happened to students in the year 1357, and that was a crucial event. Fourteen years after Imam Khomeini's (r.a.) resonant yell, our youth, adolescents and high school students - who were among the most pure-hearted people of our country - entered the arena in the year 1357 and laid down their lives. The 13th of Aban is the day when students were massacred in the streets of Tehran. When these youth and adolescents entered the arena and reflected the message that had been yelled by the Imam (r.a.) 14 years earlier, the mercenary killers of America took revenge on them. They opened fire on the youth. They shed their blood on the streets of Tehran and covered the streets with their blood. This is also an important point, not just because a number of youth and adolescents were martyred - which is of course important - but because the great movement initiated by the Imam (r.a.) in the years 1342 and 1343 had remained so fresh and dynamic that a number of pure-hearted youth had been inspired to take to the streets, feel responsible and stand up against the bayonets of the oppressive and satanic Pahlavi regime. Such things rarely happen in the world.

The same is true of today. Just like those times, today our high school students alongside our university students, Basij and other social groups are among the most pioneering social groups of our country. Similarly, during the Sacred Defense Era, our students played a pioneering role. I am in contact with many families of our martyrs and arrange meetings with them. If you speak with these families and ask them how old their children were when they were martyred, they will tell you that their children were martyred at the age of 16, 17, 14. What does this mean? It means that commitment, revolutionary spirit and sense of responsibility - which was rooted in insight - have become so strong that even high school students of this country enter the arena and lay down their lives. It means that even high school students of our country are prepared to give up all their youthful wishes in order to achieve great ideals and Islamic and divine goals in society.

The capture of the den of espionage is the last thing that the 13th of Aban represents. On the occasion of the anniversary of Imam Khomeini's (r.a.) exile and the massacre of students, once again our youth entered the arena in the year 1358 and did something that astonished the world and brought America to its knees. This is the truth. It is not just a slogan. You should know that the day the den of spies was captured, the American government was several times more formidable and prestigious than today. America has lost its prestige in the world today, and different peoples are openly insulting and cursing America. It was not like this at that time. America used to be regarded as the world's top superpower at that time. Our young students - who were acting as the first line of defense in the Iranian nation's camp of resistance - courageously captured America's embassy, and those who were in the embassy were taken hostage. Of course Imam Khomeini (r.a.) was kind enough to let some of them - like women - return to America after a short period of time. However, the main elements of the embassy stayed here for a long time. This was also a great movement which undermined America's power in the world. In spite of all that power, America suddenly lost its respect in the eyes of the peoples of the world. The situation got so bad that the American President [President Jimmy Carter] resorted to a covert military attack to rescue the hostages. They deployed their spies inside the country. They prepared the ground. They spoke to different mercenaries. They considered different places for their operation. They attacked our country with their helicopters and airplanes. The plan was to regroup in Tabas, go to Tehran, rescue the hostages and take them to America. But the famous event happened in Tabas, and Allah the Exalted destroyed their prestige. Their airplanes and helicopters caught fire, and they were forced to return to America from Tabas. These are the events that the 13th of Aban represents.

The 13th of Aban is a symbol. It contains many meanings, and these meanings are all lessons for us. We must keep these things in mind: American greed, corruption of the satanic Pahlavi regime and its dependence on America, firm resistance of the faith that depended on the insight of our magnanimous Imam and the people, presence of the young generation on the scene and the valor and boldness of the young revolutionary generation against America whose face had been made up to look formidable. These are all meanings that are embodied by the 13th of Aban. Therefore, the 13th of Aban is not just an insignificant name.

Just think about it. Last year - the year 1388 - a limited number of unfortunate people took to the streets on the 13th of Aban and shouted slogans against the 13th of Aban in the vain hope that they would manage to smear this great occasion. Of course they failed, and it was obvious that they were going to fail. But try to see what was behind their movement. What was it that they were opposed to? They were expressing their opposition to this symbol which contains great meanings. In fact they were expressing their opposition to these meanings. They wanted to restore the impressive power of America. They wanted to disguise the hegemony and interference of America. They wanted to question the great movement of the Iranian nation against that great oppression.

When one understands the meaning of the 13th of Aban, one realizes who and what these people - namely, the people who were trying to smear the 13th of Aban - were and what their goal was. This is the insight that I repeatedly emphasize. It is necessary to think carefully.

I wish to tell you dear youth that today you are the vanguard of the movement of the Iranian nation. The Iranian nation has set its sights on the peaks, and it is moving towards those peaks. Both enemies and friends admit that the Iranian nation is swiftly moving towards the peaks. Of course there is still a long way to go. We should avoid simplistic thoughts. The path that lies ahead of us is not one that can be completed in one or two years. It is a long path. But the Iranian nation is moving on this path. It is not possible to achieve one's goal as long as one does not move forward. Nobody can achieve their goal by sitting around, daydreaming and yawning. It is necessary to take action and move forward with firm determination.

In scientific areas, in technological areas, in political areas, in different service areas and in construction areas, we have made notable achievements. Fortunately, today the entire country is like a huge factory, and people are working, rendering services and doing construction work in every part of this huge factory. Iranian laborers acquire skill and gain experience, the people benefit from this and we become independent of the others.

In the past, if we wanted to construct a bridge in a city, we had to invite a European expert. If we wanted to construct a dam, we had to ask a number of foreign governments to do us a favor and build a dam for us. We had to invite foreigners to build a bridge or a dam, let alone more complicated things. Today the Iranian nation is independent in terms of these things. It is rich in terms of talented manpower. It enjoys caring, concerned and competent managers. The Iranian nation is moving forward. But who are the people who are at the forefront of this movement? They are our youth, students and young seminarians. It is our youth who are leading this movement. It is the youth who are the driving force behind this great movement, this colossal train that is moving forward in a steady manner.

Of course we need competent and experienced managers. Emphasizing the important role of the youth does not mean that we are allowed to disrespect old and experienced people. No, their experience is necessary as well, but this movement will not be completed as long as the youth are not involved. By Allah's favor, today the youth are present on the scene. This is great and very important. You dear youth are the vanguard of this movement - in political arenas, in economic arenas and in scientific arenas.

In the political arena, it was our youth who put an end to the fitna of the year 1388. Our youth and our young students played a more important role than other factors. Otherwise, the fitna was a great fitna. I would inform you that after the passage of a few years, international experts will be free to begin writing [about the fitna]. I may not live long enough to see that happen, but you will. You will hear and read what a great plot was behind the fitna of the year 1388. This fitna is very important. They had a very strange goal. In fact they wanted to capture Iran. Most elements of this fitna - the protesters and certain spokesmen - had entered this arena unknowingly. But they did not realize that they were being guided by certain hands. There are accurate psychological explanations that can account for how some people entered this arena and helped the enemy unknowingly. Putting an end to this fitna was a great achievement. It was you dear youth who helped accomplish this achievement.

My dear ones, maintain your presence on the scene. The country belongs to you. The peaks that I told you about belong to you. By Allah's favor, when you grow up, you will see these peaks and you will be a source of pride for your nation. Of course no movement ever achieves perfection. Moving towards the peaks is an ongoing process, and it is never completed. The important point is that a nation should learn and become determined to move towards perfection. This determination should never be undermined.

Fortunately, today the Islamic Republic and the honorable people who are supporting and safeguarding it are stronger than ever before. Today our path is clearer than ever before, and we know what we are doing. We know where we are going. We know our friends, and we know our enemies as well.

Today the enemies of the Iranian nation have grown weaker. They are hated more, and they suffer from more problems. They are suffering from economic, political and various other kinds of problems. Of course this does not mean that we can safely rest and forget about everything. No, the enemy must never be underestimated. You should always remember that the enemy is lying in ambush and that it is vigilant. But you should know that today the enemy cannot use its old methods. Today the Iranian nation is vigilant. Our youth are vigilant. They are aware. The major portion of the young population of this country is at the service of these goals - in academic environments, in marketplaces, in schools and in seminaries. Our youth are active in all areas.

Dear God, bestow Your grace and blessings on our youth. Dear God, make benevolence prevalent in this country. Dear God, educate us the way Islam wants. Dear God, help the Iranian nation achieve many victories. Dear God, accept the prayers of the Imam of the Age (may our souls be sacrificed for his sake) and turn them into support for this nation.

Greetings be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings
