Ayat. Jannati: Iran not to yield to US

Ayat. Jannati: Iran not to yield to US
10/28/2011 3:59:48 PM

Friday prayers leader of Tehran Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati says Iranian people will not yield to the US.

Delivering his second Friday prayers sermon here at Tehran University campus, Ayatollah Jannati said, “Today, the US power has downgraded worldwide and crisis has ripped through the US and Europe as Islamic awakening has spread; today is the day of encountering the US as much as we can.”

He went on to say that today, we should make the world understand that our people have always been anti-American, not ready to yield in.

Addressing the US statesmen, Ayatollah Jannati questioned, “Why do you not take lessons from history? Your false claim for troop build-up in Iraq has become known to everybody worldwide; you have brought to Iraq thousands of billion dollars of American people, that 99 percent of whom have been protesting, so as to kill people.

The anti-US wave has spread in all countries, where Islamic awakening is taking place, said Ayatollah Jannati, adding, “You (the US) treat your people harshly; you should know that people can not be treated by force.”

"Ninety-nine percent are standing against one percent," said Ayatollah Jannati, adding that you are advised not to suppress 99 percent of your population just because of interests of the remaining one percent.

Also touching on the US allegations that Iran was involved in assassination of Saudi Ambassador to US, he said Iran has not a record in that connection. “You are yourself the terror agent, killing people in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan. What would Iran gain in assassination of Saudi Ambassador in the US soil?”

Imam Jawad (AS)

Imam Jawad (AS)

The last day of the lunar month of Zil-Qa'da marks the martyrdom anniversary of the Messenger of Allah's 9th Infallible Successor, Imam Mohammad Taqi al-Jawad (A.S).

The Ninth Infallible Imam and the Greatest Miracle of his age Imam Mohammad Taqi al-Jawad (A.S) who enriched and expanded the Islamic thought and Shari'a was born in the holy city of Medina-the city of his grandfather, the Messenger of Allah (A.S), on 10th Rajab 195 A.H.

He was the son of Imam Ali Reza (A.S) and Hazrate Sabika also known as Khaizarun (A.S).

Imam Reza (A.S) was forced to leave Medina and move towards the city of Marv (in Khorasan - Iran) to accept Ma'mun's invitation after many refusals and abstentions.

Before moving to Marv, the holy Imam took with him his son Imam Mohammad al-Jawad (A.S), then, he started out from Medina towards Mecca in order to pay a visit to the Sacred House (Ka'ba) and also to say farewell to it.

Imam al-Reza (A.S) performed hajj (pilgrimage) with his son al-Jawad who was only four years at that time.

Indeed, the young Imam expressed his adherence and love for his father by his insistence to stay under the care of the holy embrace.

It was difficult for him to return home (Medina), alone, and depart from his father, who wrote, in his farewell letter to the Sacred House, that he would not return.

The moments of farewell ended and the hour of departure approached; the young Imam al-Jawad (A.S) returned home (to Medina), bearing the yearnings of love, the adherence of a son for his father; his father moved towards the city of Marv while his heart departed to Medina, following the procession of the beloved al-Jawad (A.S).

The period of transferring the leadership to Imam Mohammad Taqi al-Jawad (A.S) faced a dangerous problem, which caused debates and arguments concerning the personality of Imam Mohammad Taqi al-Jawad (A.S) because of his youth.

Imam Jawad (A.S) was young, at the age of seven, when his father passed away.

Books of history and biographies record some of these discussions about the personality of the young Imam and his capability for the leadership at that age.

When Imam Mohammad al-Jawad (A.S) was born, the same questions were sent to Imam al-Reza (A.S) in order for them to know who would be the Imam after al-Reza (A.S). Was not Mohammad al-Jawad (A.S) a child? And how could he bear the responsibility of the leadership and its affairs if he was at this age?

Indeed, Imam al-Reza (A.S) always confirmed that the Imam after him would be his son, Mohammad Taqi al-Jawad (A.S).

Ibn Qulawaih, on the authority of Kulaini, on the authority of Hossein bin Mohammad, on the authority of Khariani, on the authority of his father, said: "I (i.e. Khayrani's father) was standing in front of Abul-Hassan al-Reza (A.S), in Khorasan.

Someone asked him: "My master, if something happens, to whom authority will belong?"

"To Abu Jafar (al-Jawad), my son," he replied.

The speaker indicated that the age of Abu Jafar was too young.

So, Abul-Hassan al-Reza (A.S), replied: "Allah, may He be praised, sent Jesus, son of Mary, to be an apostle, a prophet, the bringer of a revealed law (Shari'a), to begin (his mission) when his age was younger than that of Abu Jafar (al-Jawad), peace be upon him."

Narrated Mu'ammar bin Khallad that he heard Imam al-Reza (A.S), saying: "When he mentioned something and, then, said: "What need have you for that? Here is Abu Ja'far, whom I have brought into my meetings and whom I have made to be my successor."

Then, he added: "We are the family of the House (Ahlul-Bayt). Our young inherit from our old, like one feather (on a wing) followed by the next."

Martyrdom of Imam Jawad (A.S)

When Ma'mun died, Mu'tasim ascended the throne.

He (Mu'tasim), like his Abbasid ancestors, was worried about the leadership of Ahlul-Bayt (PBUH) and their political and scholarly status.

Therefore, he exiled Imam al-Jawad (A.S) from Medina to Baghdad in the year 219 A.H., for fear of his popularity and extending his effect.

Indeed, Imam al-Jawad (A.S) was exiled to Baghdad from Medina and stayed in Baghdad until in the year 220 A.H. when he was martyred by poisoning by his wife Ummul Fadhl, daughter of Ma'mun, at the instigation of the ruling Abbasid caliph Mutasim.

His short life lasted twenty-five years and some months, and was full of historical, ideological and scholarly struggle and achievements.

The Holy Imam (A.S) was martyred in Baghdad in the year 220 A.H., on the 29th of Zee al-Qa'adah and was buried in the graveyard of Quraish behind his grandfather, Imam Musa bin Jafar (A.S) the seventh holy Imam which was since then became famous as Kazmain.

Supreme Leader’s Speech to Outstanding Personalities

Supreme Leader’s Speech to Outstanding Personalities
05/10/2011

The following is the full text of the speech delivered on October 5, 2011 by Ayatollah Khamenei the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution in a meeting with a group of outstanding personalities of Iran.

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

I am thankful to God for you dear youth from the bottom of my heart. I thank God with all my soul. I believe anybody who cares about the country and its destiny should be thankful to Allah the Exalted who has blessed the country with people like you. I am very thankful to God for this great blessing. Thankfully we have good, faithful, talented, active and dynamic youth. What else would a nation need in order to make progress?

The friends who spoke in this meeting made very good points. They had thought about their comments carefully. They had really worked on them. Of course I would say that any movement has its own issues and problems. As they say, any dictated transcript has certain mistakes. Refusing to take dictation is not the right way to avoid mistakes. Today our nation is doing a difficult dictation. Our officials, our government and our nation are treading a difficult path. It is natural to stubble, slip and fall to the ground sometimes. The occasional setbacks and exhaustion should not make us fearful and confused. This is not to say that I get upset when I hear about our problems and shortcomings. Not at all. Be sure about this. One of the friends said, "I do not want to criticize. I just want to open my heart to you." You can raise criticisms: nothing is wrong with this. I am not at all concerned about raising criticisms and mentioning the flaws and shortcomings. I myself voice criticisms and I am prepared to listen to criticisms. That is to say, nothing is wrong with criticizing. It is wrong to think that mentioning the shortcomings is problematic. But what is important is that the existence of shortcomings must not make us doubt the path and its righteousness. It must not shake our confidence in the righteousness of our work. We must not forget where we are going as soon as one of our companions gets tired, sits down to rest, asks for some water to drink or faces a problem on the path. We should always keep the peak in front of our eyes. This is what I am trying to say.

Some of the points which were raised by the friends are related to the issues of our elites - which should be handled by the National Elites Foundation. Some other points are beyond the issues related to our elites. I wrote down the names of these friends. By Allah's favor, the comments of the brothers and sisters will be considered by the people working for my office and they will pass them on to the relevant government officials. Well, some of our honorable government officials are present in this meeting and they will pay attention to these points. Therefore, some of the points which were raised are beyond the issues related to our elites. They are related to the issue of science and scientific progress. Certain points were raised in these areas and I believe they are completely correct. There are certain other things which are related to executive matters and these things should be handled by Mrs. Soltankhah, as she is the President's deputy in scientific affairs. Of course she is right: this kind of work is similar to interdisciplinary fields taught at universities. It is in a way related to everybody. Different governmental organizations should help her in this regard. I have heard from unofficial sources that very good things have been done or are being done and we hope we will see the outcomes.

I would like to take this opportunity to say that the document she spoke about is very important. She said that a national document is being prepared regarding the affairs of our elites. This was good news to me. All the problems which were mentioned are due to the lack of such a document. We have problems with identifying elites in the country. Before identifying elites, we need to identify highly talented people who will become elites over time. After all, not every talented person is an elite. Talented people become elites in a gradual way. Therefore, the first step is to identify outstanding talent. This step should be followed by preparing the ground for talented people to become elites and come to fruition - which is actually the point where talented people become elites. Normally this happens during graduate levels where talented youth become elites.

Everybody should pay attention to the point that the work starts from the point a person is labeled as "elite". Perhaps all of you already know this. It is wrong to think that when a person has been labeled as elite, he should rest assured that he has gained certain advantages and a good name. No, becoming an elite is the beginning of the path. If we want to consider all these stages together and pursue them appropriately, there is a need for a document like the one Mrs. Soltankhah spoke about. Therefore, I would like to stress that the document is an important document. Now that it has been prepared, by Allah's favor, efforts will be made to complete, reform or approve it as soon as possible and this is what is supposed to be done. And by Allah's favor, efforts will be made to implement the document and make it operational.

Now I would like to discuss a few points which were raised by the friends. I have not really heard anything regarding the issue of cultural nobility and aristocracy which my dear daughter spoke about. I believe that I receive various reports on different issues, but what she said was really new to me. She said that she knows of certain examples. Please make sure to prepare a report for me. If there is such a thing, it is really bad. I have not heard anything worthy of notice in this regard. Of course the children of a particular government official might boast in school or university about the position of their father. But if this affects the process of employment, education and other things, it is a very bad thing. If there is such a thing, it is necessary to put an end to it. I ask the lady who made this point to write these things down and report them to me.

One of the friends said that the youth of our country are doing good things and that they think about different matters, but he also said that our youth do not find an opportunity to play a significant role. For example, our youth should be present in the High Council of Cultural Revolution or in the "Strategic Thoughts" forums - which were mentioned in this meeting and which will hopefully continue. Of course this is a logical and valid argument. The presence of the youth in certain sectors will definitely have positive effects. I have a piece of brotherly and fatherly advice for you dear youth: it is not the case that in all sectors the presence of the youth is a positive thing. One of the ladies criticized our judiciary system and said that bringing in young judges would make the judiciary system incompetent. Judges should be experienced. Well, this was an interesting comment and I wrote it down. This is true in certain cases. Of course in certain areas - which are not few in number - the presence of the youth has a very positive, constructive and helpful effect. It opens up a new horizon to everybody. But this is not true of all areas.

In any case, it is necessary to make use of our youth, but take this point into consideration: dear audience, being passed on to the executive branch of government, being translated into an operational form or being implemented is not the only way in which your ideas, your work, your innovations and your suggestions can produce an effect. No, this is not the only way in which you can play a role. One of the most important effects of your ideas is that they create an atmosphere and a discourse in society. In this way, in an atmosphere with a particular intellectual or scholarly principle, the President, cabinet members, CEOs and all employees would think like each other. This is a good thing. And this is what you do. Think, publish your ideas and discuss them in your meetings. Start the critical academic forums, which I have stressed many times, and repeat these things in those forums. This can create a discourse. Once a discourse is created, everybody will think within the confines of that discourse. Everybody will adopt orientations within that discourse. Everybody will work within that discourse. This is exactly what you want. Therefore, if a certain thing that you discuss or propose in a particular meeting is not translated into an operational form, if it is not turned into a law or executive guidelines, you should not become disappointed. You should not think that your efforts have been futile. No, I would tell you that the scientific movement started in this way over the past 15, 16 years and it turned science into a value, which was not the case a few years earlier. This was how we made progress on a daily basis.

There was a day when certain things used to sound unlikely. Once I discussed the issue of production of knowledge. Then I realized certain people at the meeting had problems with the phrase "production of knowledge" and believed that knowledge could not be produced. Today production of knowledge has turned into an indisputable discourse. You complain that production of knowledge is not going as well as it should. But we have made a lot of progress. Therefore, it is necessary to work. You should make efforts and think. Your efforts and ideas will definitely have an effect.

I was asked to give my opinion about fundamental sciences. As was mentioned, I have discussed the issue of fundamental sciences on several occasions. I believe fundamental sciences are very important. I once said that fundamental sciences to applied sciences, as they exist today, is like money you have in your account to money you have in your pocket. People have some money in their bank accounts which is their savings and their source of hope. Of course they also carry some money in their pockets and they spend it. I have no intention of being rude, but this is the fact of the situation. The applied sciences, as they exist today, are analogous to the money we carry around in our pockets. A nation needs engineers, civil engineers, industries, physicians and health care services: these things are like the money we spend every day. But the source and the main root of these sciences are fundamental sciences.

This year during the month of Ramadan, I spoke about the humanities in a meeting with our youth and university students. I had discussed the issue previously as well. By Allah's favor, I will arrange a special meeting with people in charge of intellectual and cultural matters as well as you dear youth to speak about the humanities. The humanities are the soul of knowledge. Indeed all types of knowledge and all outstanding endeavors in society are a like a body whose soul is the humanities. The humanities provide an orientation. They specify where we are going and where our knowledge is heading. When the humanities are derailed and are based on wrong foundations and world views, this would cause all endeavors in society to develop a deviant tendency. Today the knowledge that the west has acquired is not a joke. Their knowledge is not a small achievement. The knowledge of the west is a unique historical achievement. But this knowledge has been used to further colonialism for many years. It has been used to further slavery. It has been used to promote oppression. It has been used to appropriate the wealth of nations. And you see what they are currently doing. The fact that this knowledge is being used for these purposes in spite of its honorable and admirable nature, is because of the wrong thought, wrong perspective, wrong world view and wrong orientation on which it is based.

Of course one of the friends who spoke made good points about the humanities. I have written down a few points which I would like to tell you. One issue is that the country needs scientists who love the country, the people and their identity, and the destiny of their nation. Without this sense of commitment, it is not possible to move things along. A scientist, who considers knowledge as a means of making money or doing other such things, cannot greatly contribute to the destiny of his country. I would tell you that the world has been a place of confrontation. It has been a place of confrontation between human beings because of the nature of human beings. Of course this has always been the case, but it is more so today than ever before. Whoever feels powerful tries to overpower weak people. There is no mercy unless there are religious restrictions and beliefs.

During the early Islamic era, when Muslims commanders used to enter other countries, they used to treat the people in an ethical and pious way in spite of the fact that the defeated nations had treated them with utmost severity. This was the case even until the Crusades - several centuries after the introduction of Islam. The Christians of Europe used to enter Jerusalem and massacre Muslims, but when Muslims defeated them, they treated Christians in a completely different way: they used to treat Christians in a kind way. You know that the Crusades lasted for nearly two hundred years.

During the early Islamic era in Shaam, which belonged to the Eastern Roman Empire, there was a Jewish minority. When Muslims conquered Shaam, the Jewish minority swore on the Torah that Muslims were the best people who had ever ruled them: what they said has been quoted exactly in history books. And this was a fact. This was because of religious restrictions. In the absence of religion, victorious nations used to pressure defeated nations. Victorious nations used to destroy the religion, culture, ethics, honor and pride of defeated nations. I do not want to mention the names of certain domineering governments. Of course America and the west oppress other nations and commit crimes, but they are not the only ones who are doing these things: the same is true of certain other countries. In certain places, these countries gained victory and they gave rise to so much savagery that reading about their actions and brutality makes one's hair stand on end.

Imagine that a nation wants to preserve its power and prevent others from launching an invasion on it - be it a military and security invasion, or a soft, moral and cultural invasion, which has become common in the past few decades. What should such a nation do? Both its politicians and its scientists must show self-sacrifice. This is not to say that you young elites should lay down your life and expect no material gain in return. No, I think this is too much to expect. But without dedication, outstanding people - including political and scientific elites - cannot safeguard their country. They cannot make it powerful.

The same is true of politicians. If a politician only thinks about himself, if he is only concerned about his own comfort, if he is only concerned about his pockets, if he only thinks about his carnal desires and if he does not care enough to deal with the main and essential concerns that would naturally affect his peace of mind, then his country will be defeated. The proof is the fall of several dynasties in Iran one after the other. The Safavids were a powerful government: they came to power in a glorious and pious way, but later on because of these weaknesses and the prevalence of these characteristics, they reached the point that we all know about. The Qajar Dynasty was worse and the Pahlavi Dynasty was the worst of all.

The same is true of science. If a country enjoys scientists who are interested in the destiny of their country and are prepared to make sacrifices on this path, that country will make progress. Religious faith is the best thing that can give rise to this driving force and this progress. If a country enjoys this faith, it will make progress. The inherent value of the scientific advances that we have made in the country - and definitely we are not satisfied with these advances - is far more than the conventional scientific advances in the world. Why? Because we were deprived of scientific exchanges and the assistance of others. We were under pressure and the doors had been closed to us. However, we have had tens of outstanding personalities like Shahid Shahriari. Tens and hundreds of people were trained in different areas and they accomplished outstanding achievements. And they did not at all benefit from western universities, research centers and professors. Of course they definitely made use of western achievements and this is what we should do.

One of the friends said something that I believe is correct. He said that running away from foreigners and fighting them will not get us anywhere. Yes, this is correct, but we should be careful: sometimes we speak about fighting foreigners and running away from them, but this does not mean that we should deprive ourselves of their knowledge and achievements. Not at all. I have repeatedly said that we are prepared to be their students in order to learn from them. But we must not remain their students for ever: this is the point. Our people can reach a point where others would want to become their students. This is the peak that I have in mind and we must move towards this peak. Therefore, scientific communities need to make selfless and sincere efforts in order to be able to do their work. Thankfully, you have this capacity and this potential. Thank God. You can restore the dignity of this nation.

My dear ones, the dignity and pride of our nation were trampled underfoot for decades. The Revolution made us conscious. In spite of this historical background, in spite of this scientific record, in spite of the intellectual and scientific achievements we have made, in spite of the scientific figures that were trained in our country during the time when ignorance was prevalent in the world - people like Avicenna, Muhammad ibn Zakariya, Farabi, Khajeh Nasir who used to live during the Middle Ages when there was no trace of science in the world - in spite of all these capacities, our country had reached a point where it had to depend on foreigners to provide its most basic needs. Our politicians - a bunch of incompetent and backward individuals - used to say that Iranians could not even make a ewer. A ewer is a container made of clay. Shame on a politician who speaks like this about his own people. Similarly, there was another politician who used to say that we had to become European from top to bottom in order to be able to make progress. Well, these things show that they were incompetent. It is a sign of backwardness to attribute your own weaknesses to your nation: your nation would be humiliated. The Revolution eliminated these people and we became conscious. Fortunately good things have been done. Good capacities have been discovered. We have made progress and by Allah's favor, we will continue making progress in the future.

I would like to tell our government officials that investing in production of knowledge and scientific innovation will bring in increased profit for our country and our nation. Do not stop following this path. Investing in production of knowledge and scientific innovations with the purpose of making scientific progress, should be increased on a daily basis. Such investment should not decrease. Of course today we do not even make as much investment in this regard as countries like England, Italy and France used to when they first entered the world of industry and science. We invest even less than they used to. Our scientific investments should be increased.

Of course these investments should be accompanied by an improvement in management. I would like to highlight this point, particularly to our honorable government officials. Even if we increase our financial support and allocate a large budget to scientific activities, our financial resources will be wasted without an improvement in management. It is necessary to improve management in our universities, in our scientific communities and in the presidential department designated to scientific affairs. The governmental centers, which are in charge of science and academic affairs, should definitely improve their management and of course they should also make investments.

Another point is related to the relationship between industry and university, which is not a new issue. Of course 15, 16 years ago, this issue was proposed and followed up and finally it has turned into a prevalent thought and everybody likes the idea, but it is better not to speak about the history of this issue. Well, how should we do this? If our industries do not want to fall behind the competition, they need scientific progress and innovation. The groundwork has been laid for this innovation in our universities and research centers. These research centers which should cooperate with universities can designate a department to industries so that they can participate in the activities of these research centers and address their needs through them. This is something that can be coordinated by the government. They should sit down with government officials and make plans for this. This is good both for our industry and for our universities. When universities take into account the needs of our society and the needs of the job market, they will naturally find their path. They will also become more dynamic. Of course this is also profitable for universities. And when our industries depend on innovation, production of knowledge and technology - which is something that is done in universities - they will naturally make progress. We need this process. This is something that we must definitely do.

I would like to take this opportunity to make a point about the products manufactured in our country. One of the friends mentioned this point and I made a note to speak about it in my speech. Fortunately different sectors in our country manufacture high-quality products. A major portion of our domestic products are consumed by our governmental organizations. Our governmental organizations should be determined to exclusively consume domestic products unless what they need is not produced in the country. That is to say, they should absolutely prohibit importing the products which are produced in the country. Propose this idea to the administration. Mr. President should order governmental organizations to follow this policy. And this is possible. We have had the experience. In certain cases, certain governmental organizations were explicitly ordered to avoid using foreign products in a particular project and they did so in the best possible way. If our managers are determined to use domestic products only, this will improve the quality of our domestic products, which are already high-quality. They should definitely do this.

Of course I heard that our governmental organizations and banks do not support domestic products the way they should. In certain cases, our manufacturers go bankrupt because they are not supported. It is necessary for the administration to deal with this issue as well. That is to say, the administration should issue the necessary orders in this regard.

Another point was also made in this meeting and I wrote it down: sometimes the government does not act according to the terms of its contract with our domestic manufacturers. This is while if our manufacturers had signed a contract with foreign industrialists, they would have received the money immediately. But the government delays the process for one, two years when it comes to paying the money. It is necessary to put an end to these things.

Another issue is the issue of scholarly articles. Fortunately our articles have improved noticeably in terms of quantity and in certain case in terms of quality. However, there is an important point in this regard which I have discussed repeatedly and fortunately I noticed today that some of the friends repeated the same point in their statements: the point is that publishing articles is not the goal. First of all, it is the quality of articles that is important. What is more important is the orientation of our articles. We should ask ourselves why we are writing a particular article. This increase in the number of published scholarly articles should show its effect in our job market, in our products and in our daily life. Scholarly articles should be written on the basis of the needs of the country. This is every important. Therefore, what is important is that our articles should be high-quality and they should be written in order to address the needs of the country. In this case, it will be alright if somebody writes an article and sells the intellectual property to somebody else. If a particular article is to the advantage of the country and a particular orientation, it will be good irrespective of its form. But publishing articles is not the goal. The goal is not an increase in the number of our scholarly articles: this increase should show its effects in our industries and business activities.

The issue of agriculture which was mentioned in the meeting is also a very important issue. Agriculture is among the sectors which receives special support from the government in all parts of the world. This sector should definitely be taken into consideration.

Anyway, today's meeting was a very good meeting. God willing, the friends who spoke will give me their reports and I will study them and follow them up. I hope Allah the Exalted bestows success and assistance on you. By Allah's favor and thanks to the efforts of your dear youth, the country will get closer to the lofty goals of the Revolution as much as possible.

Greetings be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings

Supreme Leader’s Speech to Hajj Officials

Supreme Leader’s Speech to Hajj Officials
03/10/2011

The following is the full text of the speech delivered on October 3, 2011 by Ayatollah Khamenei the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution in a meeting with the officials in charge of hajj affairs.

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

I would like to welcome the dear brothers and sisters and the officials in charge of hajj affairs. I pray to God to help and guide you so that you can arrange a great and heavenly hajj ceremony for our dear pilgrims this year - relying on your firm determination and strong motivation.

This great event - namely, hajj ceremonies - which is repeated by the Islamic Ummah every year, is one of the essential secrets behind the success of Islam. According to Islamic narrations, hajj means attending a divine celebration. It is obvious how important and valuable it is to attend a divine celebration at the center of glory, power, beauty and generosity. All Muslims from different countries try to make it to this celebration every year, but only some people get this opportunity. We are part of the Islamic Ummah and we are shouldering part of the responsibility. Part of the great movement by the Islamic Ummah belongs to we Iranians. We should think about making plans and arranging an impressive and significant ceremony on an international level. We should also think about our personal interests. All honorable pilgrims should think about their personal interests. Therefore, both of these goals should be pursued at the same time.

Regarding the first goal - namely, holding an international ceremony that belongs to the world of Islam and the Islamic Ummah - Iranian pilgrims have certain responsibilities. They should behave well. They should behave in a brotherly way. They should show solidarity. They should use their Islamic bond with other Muslim nations in order to make hearts get closer to each other. These are among our responsibilities, just the opposite of what the enemies of Islam and Muslims currently want. The enemies of Islam and Muslims want the Islamic Ummah to be disunited because if the Islamic Ummah unites, it will become powerful and it will seek its identity in different areas. Then everything will become difficult for the arrogant powers of the world. Therefore, they want to create discord. They create religious discord. They create ethnic discord. They promote radical nationalism in different countries. They divide Muslims into different groups and label them as Persians, Arabs, Turks, Pakistanis, Shia and Sunni. They constantly try to highlight and magnify these differences in order to build a wall among Muslims. They highlight these differences in order to make us suspect each other and prevent us from joining hands and giving rise to a great movement.

This conspiracy will increase this year. You should know this. This year Islamic Awakening has started. Egypt has awakened. Tunisia has awakened. Libya has awakened. Yemen has awakened. Bahrain has awakened. The cutting edge of Muslim nations' revolutions and great movements has been aimed at the arrogant powers and the Zionists. Therefore, they are trying to prevent nations from establishing relations with one another. They are trying to prevent hearts from getting closer to one another. "If a hundred hearts become familiar with each other, they will be one and the same." When hearts get close to each other, there will be one unified demand and one unanimous decision. They do not want this. Therefore, they will try to encourage Shia, Sunni and followers other denominations to highlight their distinctive characteristics and unfortunately they have their own tools to arouse sentiments. They have tools for different purposes and they might have even more tools to arouse sentiments. Try to overcome them. "And hold fast by the covenant of Allah all together and be not disunited." [The Holy Quran, 3: 103] Hajj is a manifestation of the divine covenant, so hold fast by this firm covenant of Allah all together. Stay together. Not only Iranians but also the entire Islamic Ummah should stay together. Muslims - whether they are African or Asian or European, whether their skin color is black or white and no matter in which part of the world they live - are a unified body. This is the global and general outlook that should be adopted.

Establish a relationship with other Muslims. Speak to them. Keep each other informed of the latest developments. Raise each other's morale. Explain the truths about the arrogant powers and the enemies to the brothers who have entered this arena recently. You have thirty years of experience in this regard. And those who are not able to explain and clarify should attract people to Islam with their behavior. "Invite people [to Islam] with something other than your tongues." It is possible to attract people towards Islam by speaking to them, but a better and more effective way is to attract them through one's behavior. Your manners and showing respect and commitment to the truths of hajj - these are communal behaviors that can contribute to holding this international Islamic event in a better way.

There are a number of things that are done for the sake of one's heart. You should have provisions [for your journey to the hereafter]. In this world, we are sullied by material possessions, motives and temptations. Woe betide anybody who crosses the border to the next world like this. We need to purify ourselves. This purification can be achieved through daily prayers, reciting the Holy Quran, fasting, charitable actions and different kinds of religious obligations that bring about purification for human beings. Hajj is a collection of these obligations. There is divine remembrance in hajj. There is tawaf in hajj. There is daily prayers in hajj. There is wuquf in hajj. There is attention to God in hajj. There is charitable actions in hajj. There is sacrifice in hajj. There is everything in Hajj: it is a complete collection of religious rituals.

Make the best of these few weeks. Purify your hearts. Hajj ceremonies, Masjid al-Haram, tawaf, Masjid al-Nabawi and those great rituals provide the best opportunity to do so. While pilgrims are together, each of them establishes a separate relationship with God. And not everybody might know this. Preserve and strengthen this relationship. Start from now. Maybe you should have started earlier.

It is necessary to become prepared for hajj, just as great religious scholars and mystics used to prepare themselves for several months before the holy month of Ramadan. The same is true of hajj. It is necessary to prepare oneself before the pilgrimage. Avoiding sins, backbiting, injustice and impure looks and actions are the most important things to do. Avoiding these things prepares the heart to enter this divine celebration.

After you obtain provisions for your journey to the next world and come back from hajj pilgrimage, you should try to safeguard your provisions. Reciting the Holy Quran repeatedly over the course of hajj pilgrimage has become an established tradition - and what a good tradition it is. Some people recite the Holy Quran once in Medina and once or twice in Mecca. Continue this tradition. Those who do not regularly engage in midnight prayers try it during hajj. They go to Masjid al-Haram and Masjid al-Nabawi to engage in midnight prayers. Continue this tradition.

If we observe these things, hajj is a great means of bringing about transformation. Every hajj season gives rise to a movement in society and the movement is a mass movement: it is not limited to a few individuals. During the hajj season, people develop more love for God. A heart which is filled with love for God is very valuable and precious. A heart which is filled with the love of God is less inclined towards sins or it is not inclined towards sins at all. Such a heart is inclined towards good deeds. It is necessary to create this love. Creating this love is possible through divine remembrance, attention to God, sincerity and solemn praying. What I am trying to say is that you should appreciate hajj - both as a group and as an individual.

Try to be a source of pride for your country - your dear and glorious homeland, Iran. With their behavior during hajj, Iranian pilgrims can raise the position of their country, their history, their Revolution and the Islamic Republic in the eyes of the people of the world - because during hajj people come together from all parts of the world. It is also possible to do the opposite. We can go there and humiliate our country and our nation through our bad and frivolous actions.

I am not opposed to buying souvenirs, but I am opposed to spending too much time in marketplaces, which is a very bad thing to do. There are some people who cannot stop themselves from shopping. Such actions would dishonor your nation and your people. It is a pity to do so. They go shopping and buy certain things that are often low-quality products imported from far-away profit-minded countries which have colluded with the companies of the host country. They produce fake and substandard products for hajj pilgrims and they flood the market with these products. And you go and lose your money and dignity in order to buy these substandard products. Today we have a lot of domestically-produced products which are beautiful and high-quality and they enjoy variety. And they have been produced by the hands of Iranian laborers: your own brothers. Some pilgrims buy souvenirs inside the country before going on hajj - which is a good thing to do. They keep what they have bought until they return from hajj and they give those things to their relatives after their pilgrimage. After all, they are just gifts. This is a very good thing to do.

Some people bring certain things which are supposed to be blessed, but they are not. The prayer mats that are produced in Sanandaj and Kurdistan province are far better than the prayer mats which are brought from there. Help your brothers. Buy the products - which are produced by the hands of your brothers and are better and more beautiful - and give them to your relatives as souvenirs. The same is true of all our products. I just mentioned prayers mats, which are considered as the most sacred souvenirs, as an example. Try to observe these things.

We have everything in Islam. The Islamic Republic has everything within itself. We have material products as well as spiritual gifts. Our knowledge, our teachings, the Holy Quran, the Sunnah, the narrations from our infallible Imams (a.s.) - these things are assets for us. If we pay attention to these assets, if we make use of them and if we do not deprive ourselves of them, we will move forward. "If you do good, you will do good for your own souls, and if you do evil, it shall be for them." [The Holy Quran, 17: 7] If we observe our covenant with God, we will be rewarded: "Whoever fulfills what he has covenanted with Allah, He will grant him a mighty reward." [The Holy Quran, 48: 10] And if we fail to do so and break our covenant with Allah the Exalted, we will work against ourselves: "Whoever breaks (his faith), he breaks it only to the injury of his own soul." [The Holy Quran, 48: 10]

A few years ago - I think it was around ten years ago - I gave emphatic recommendations to our government officials regarding the need to combat economic corruption. And they welcomed my recommendations, but if they had acted on the recommendations, the recent banking embezzlement - which has preoccupied all newspapers, all governmental organizations and all minds - would not have happened. When we fail to take action, we are forced to suffer from such things. If corruption was combated, such a huge embezzlement - whatever the exact figure is - would not happen. When we fail to take action, these things happen and they preoccupy the hearts and minds of the people. They break the heart of the people. How many hearts would be broken in the country by such corruption? How many people would lose their hope? Is this what our people deserve? This happened because we failed to take action. It was warned that corruption was taking root and that the passage of time would make it difficult to uproot it. These things were pointed out and highlighted. These things were all pointed out. Such events disappoint sincere and pure-hearted investors. If these recommendations had been implemented, we would not have suffered from such things.

Of course I would tell our dear people that our government officials who are working for the three branches of government will combat and follow up this issue as well as other possible issues. And they must do these things: combating corruption is their duty. All three branches of government are making efforts in this regard. There are certain people who want to take advantage of these events in order to humiliate our government officials. Our government officials are working hard. The Majlis, the administration and the judiciary are all working hard.

Of course the news was spread. Our printed press and other media did certain things and spread the news. Nothing is wrong with this, but they should not dwell on the issue. Let our government officials do their duty. Let them follow up the issue in a wise, prudent, determined and careful way. A certain amount of hype might be necessary to raise public awareness. But dwelling on the subject is not at all advisable - especially if there are some people who are planning to take advantage of the issue in other ways. They must be careful. Of course our government officials are following up the issue. The people should know that these things are being followed up and that the efforts will not stop. By Allah's favor, the treacherous hands will be cut off.

Our judiciary officials - who are thankfully following up the issue seriously - should tell the people what they have done so that the people know that things are being followed up. Our judiciary officials must not have mercy on wrong-doers, vandals and corrupt individuals.

I hope Allah the Exalted will bestow His grace and blessings on our nation. I hope He will make this year's hajj ceremonies auspicious for us. By Allah's favor, all of you and all Iranian people will benefit from the prayers of the Imam of the Age (may our souls be sacrificed for his sake). God willing, you will complete this pilgrimage with dignity and you will return in good health.

Greetings be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings

Ayatollah Emami Kashani: Islamic system is against any terror

Ayatollah Emami Kashani: Islamic system is against any terror
Friday, 21 October 2011 13:00

Tehran's interim Friday Prayer Leader, Ayatollah Mohammad Emami Kashani, has emphasized that the sacred Islamic system is against any terror.

According to IRIB World Service, referring to US new anti-Iran scenario, and the US baseless claim, which alleges Iran has been involved in a plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to US, Ayatollah Emami Kashani said that White House ringleaders, given the escalating social problems in the US, are intent on derailing the public opinion.

Reminding the collapse of Marxist and Communist regimes, Tehran's interim Friday Prayer leader added that with intensification of social discontent in the majority of European countries, especially the US, the liberal and capitalist system of the West will also collapse in the future.

Ayatollah Kashani also pointed out that the ceremony of disavowal of disbelievers throughout this year's Hajj pilgrimage is of paramount importance due to its concurrency with the Islamic awakening movement, which has swept the regional countries. He pointed out that this year's disavowal of disbelievers ceremony will take place with the wide participation of all Muslims.

In further remarks, Tehran's interim Friday Prayer leader thanked the enthusiastic people of Kermanshah Province, western Iran, who accorded a warm and glorious welcome to the Leader of Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, while underlining that the people of Kermanshah renewed their allegiance with the Leader.

Ayatollah Emami Kashani attached importance to presence of the Leader of Islamic Revolution among the people of Kermanshah Province, from all walks of life, while also reminding that the sacred Islamic system is stable and whatever is to the benefit of Islamic Iran, and whatever people have voted for, will take place.

Also referring to the death of Libyan dictator, Muammar Gaddafi, Tehran's interim Friday Prayer leader noted that destruction and humiliation is the fate of all dictators, while calling on the world's freedom-seekers, especially the freedom-seekers in the region, to struggle for materialization of their rights.

Enemies fear Iran's leading role in region

Enemies fear Iran's leading role in region
2011/10/19 - 16:00

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei said the Iranian nation triumphed in thwarting multiple plots hatched by arrogant powers, reiterating the significance of maintaining vigilance against persisting enemy schemes.

Islamic Revolution Leader cautioned how the enemy has persistently sought to portray an “inappropriate image” of the Islamic Republic to regional nations.

"US policies across the globe, particularly in the Middle East, have been foiled thanks to the resistance of the Iranian nation," said Ayatollah Khamenei in an address to a massive crowd of people in the city of Kangavar in western Iranian province of Kermanshah Wednesday morning.

Ayatollah Khamenei described resistance against arrogant powers as an “outstanding feature” of the Iranian nation and stated that the enemy intends to block the emergence of Iran as a role model among regional countries.

Islamic Revolution Leader said the evil countries are well aware that the awakened nations in the region are looking up to Iran as a role model so they have mobilized all their might and instruments to prevent “Iran and Iranians” from becoming the leader of the grand Islamic Awakening movement so that other world nations do not follow in Iran’s path of resistance.

He said that the Iranian people have started a very difficult path and managed to strongly and honorably put some very difficult periods behind them such as the eight-year Iraqi imposed war as well as repeated sanctions imposed against the nation.

Ayatollah Khamenei called on the Iranian nation to reinforce its unity and integrity on a daily basis, reiterating that the Islamic establishment in Iran is unique in its adamant refusal to yield to arrogant powers.

Ayatollah Khamenei also urged the Media to exercise due caution in making remarks and disseminating information that would, intentionally or unintentionally, assist the enemy in achieving its anti-Iran objectives.

Supreme Leader’s Speech to People of Kermanshah

Supreme Leader’s Speech to People of Kermanshah
12/10/2011

The following is the full text of the speech delivered on October 12, 2011 by Ayatollah Khamenei the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution on his arrival to Kermanshah province.

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, and peace and greetings upon our Master and Prophet, Ab-al-Qassem Al-Mustafa Muhammad, and upon his immaculate companions and infallible household, especially the one remaining with Allah on earth.

I am very happy and thankful to Allah the Exalted who gave me the opportunity to be present among you dear, loyal and faithful people of Kermanshah today. Although my visit to your city and your province was delayed, this does not decrease the importance of your province and its honorable people. In terms of its human, natural and geographic position, this province is one of the outstanding provinces of our dear and vast country. In the beginning of my speech, I would like to make a few points about the virtues of Kermanshah and its honorable people.

Certain positive characteristics are shared by all our people from across the country, but certain other characteristics are more evident and more significant in certain provinces. Since ancient times, the people of Kermanshah have been famous for bravery, loyalty, kindness, hospitality - and in short, the positive characteristics that define heroes. These are among the characteristics that shine brightly in Kermanshah. Everybody from near and far knows and feels this.

In spite of their ethnic, denominational and linguistic diversity, the people of Kermanshah province have always lived together in a kind, peaceful and brotherly way. And this is what has always made me praise the people of Kermanshah. This is a very good characteristic and it should be insisted on, safeguarded and increased. The brave nomads and the valorous residents of border areas of this province are famous for their nomadic bravery.

In the early stages of the imposed war in the year 1359, I travelled to all parts of this province and saw different parts of it up close. In Gilan-e Gharb and Eslamabad, which are populated by Shia Muslims, in Paveh and Oraman areas, which are populated by Sunni Muslims, in Rijab and Dalaho - in every part of the province the people are defending the Islamic Republic and expressing their respect for it. In the capital city of Kermanshah, which is inhabited by different ethnic groups and tribes, I witnessed the same spirit which I noticed in different other parts of this province. This is an outstanding characteristic.

During the Sacred Defense Era, this province went through a great test. The eight-year war started and ended in Kermanshah province. This province and its cities - including Eslamabad, Gilan-e Gharb and other border areas -were the first targets of the air raids by the Iraqi Ba'ath regime. And the first borders which were attacked were the borders of Qasr-e Shirin in this province. The war ended in this province eight years later. The last defensive operation of our country and our dear people during Operation Mersad was also carried out in this province. That is to say, this province was constantly engaged in defense, resistance and bravery throughout the eight-year war. The same is true of the time between the victory of the Revolution and the beginning of the imposed war. One month after the victory of the Revolution - in Esfand 1357 - it was the youth of Kermanshah who decided to defend the military base of the army of Sanandaj. They were among the first groups who were mobilized to fight anti-revolutionaries and some of them are among the famous martyrs of Kermanshah province.

There have been outstanding people in literature, in different forms of art, in poetry, in calligraphy, in scientific and scholarly work - including engineering, fundamental sciences and religious studies - and in sports and thankfully there are still such figures in this province. There are certain scholarly families whose presence in this city and province dates back to more than one or two centuries in certain cases. That is to say, this province is such an outstanding province in terms of its human resources.

Women play a significant role in this province. Except in Kermanshah and one other province, in no other province of our country were so many women martyred or disabled during the Sacred Defense Era. In terms of the number of women who were martyred at the frontline and in the bombings, there is only one other province that is similar to Kermanshah. And this is another advantage that Kermanshah enjoys.

The natural conditions of the province are similar to its human conditions. Kermanshah has an outstanding position in terms of its natural resources. In terms of natural and geographic conditions, this province is an outstanding province. Kermanshah has great potential for agriculture. It has enormous resources of surface water which have unfortunately remained untapped. One of the things that must be done in this province is to make more efforts to exploit surface water. This province has arable land and fertile soil. There is more than eight hundred thousand hectares of arable land in this province. This province has diverse climatic conditions. It has industrial and mineral capacities. Because of its geographic location and because it is a border province and is connected to different parts of the country, this province has a capacity for transportation and trade. This city and province lies between several important economic centers of the country. Moreover, because of its beautiful nature and its unique historical sites, this province has a capacity for tourism. These are the natural, geographic and human resources of this province.

Considering these positive and outstanding characteristics, the youth of this province should be full of hope, dynamism and enthusiasm to work. The youth of this province should know in what conditions and in what a sensitive and advantaged area they live. Of course there are certain problems and God willing, government officials will focus their efforts on eliminating the problems. Among the problems of the province, the issue of unemployment is the most serious problem. Unemployment in this province is higher than the average rate of unemployment in the country and it is necessary to pay special attention to the issue of unemployment in this province.

My trip to this province will last several days and I have arranged different meetings with the people of this city and other cities of the province. The trip took place at a sensitive time. New developments occur in the region and the world every day. The developments that are taking place in the region and the world at large are unprecedented. The developments that are taking place in the region and in the west - both in Europe and America - are unprecedented events. The conditions of the world are sensitive and of course these conditions are to our advantage. In such conditions it is very good for the Iranian nation to have a comprehensive outlook on its conditions and an insightful outlook on conditions of the world.

Today I will use this opportunity to speak about certain important issues related to our dear nation and country, issues which are worthy of attention and are necessary to be reminded of. Our main issue is related to the people: their presence, their will and their firm determination. I would say that in all developments and in great social movements, the criterion is the role of the people. That is to say, the spread of a development, the spread of thought and the spread of the influence of a social reformer depend on the strength of their relationship with the people. The stronger the relationship of the people with that development, the more the chances of its success. If a development is separated from the people, it will not last long and it will not be able to do anything. Of course in the history of our country, the transfer of power and rise and fall of sultans had nothing to do with the people. But among the dynasties that came to power in our country, the ones which managed to form a warm and friendly relationship with the people in one way or another were more stable and more successful in running the affairs of the country and in bringing about national dignity. Every one of them that broke off their relationship with the people lost everything and the best example of such dynasties in our recent history is the Qajar Dynasty and the cursed Pahlavi Dynasty. In our recent history we have had the experience of the constitutional movement. We have also had the experience of nationalizing the oil industry. The people were present in these two events. The people were the factor behind the success of both of these movements. But they drifted away from the people. During the constitutional movement, the English came and deceptively rode the waves of the movement and they sidelined the people and their populist leaders. The constitutional movement ended up in Reza Khan's bullying.

As for the nationalization of the oil industry in the early 1330s, the people played a significant role and their presence brought about success, but they soon drifted away from the people and turned their back on them. The American-backed coup took control of the affairs and led the country into autocracy once again.

In the history of our country there has been no event like the victory of the Islamic Revolution and the subsequent events in which the people played a direct role. In the Islamic Revolution the people stepped into the arena. All people from various social backgrounds - residents of cities and villages, men and women, young and old people, educated and uneducated people - stepped into the arena together. Although they did not use coercion and they did not have - or did not use - guns, they managed to overpower a regime which was armed to its teeth and was being supported by the arrogant powers. They managed to help the Revolution achieve victory. However, the essential point about our Revolution is that the people continued to play a role after the victory of the Revolution. And this was because of the wisdom of our magnanimous Imam and the insight of that wise, spiritual and divine man. He knew the Iranian nation well. He had developed faith in the Iranian nation. He had faith in the honesty, firm determination and capabilities of the Iranian nation. There were some people at that time who used to say the people should return to their homes after the victory of the Revolution. Imam Khomeini stood firm and entrusted the affairs of the country to the people. Fifty days after the victory of the Islamic Revolution, the political system of the country was determined by the people in a referendum. Take a look at different revolutions and it will become clear how important this point is. Fifty days after the victory of the Revolution, the people knew what system of government they wanted. They went to the ballot boxes and in that extraordinary and historic election they showed that they want the Islamic Republic.

Such an event has not happened in any revolution over the past two hundred years - during which great revolutions have taken place. After no other revolution has the system of government been immediately determined by the people, and not by some outside factor. Immediately after the referendum our magnanimous Imam went after the Constitution. I will never forget that three, four months after the victory of the Revolution during Ordibehesht or Khordad of the year 1358, Imam Khomeini asked the members of the revolutionary council - myself included - to travel to Qom to discuss an important matter and we went to him. I will not forget the anger on Imam Khomeini's face. I witnessed very few of those angry expressions on Imam Khomeini's face. He wanted to know why no action was being taken to prepare a constitution. This was while only three months had passed since the victory of the Revolution. In the same meeting it was decided that an election should be held in order to elect members of the Assembly of Experts. Officials of the provisional government held the election. The people took part in a general election and voted for their candidates who were supposed to prepare the Constitution. The elected members prepared the Constitution in a few months. Afterwards the Imam said that the Constitution had to be put to a vote. As a result, a referendum was held so that the people could vote for the Constitution. The vast majority of the people voted for the Constitution. Therefore, the victory of the Revolution did not put an end to the presence of the people. The people continued to play a role in running the affairs of the country. Barely a year had passed since the victory of the Revolution when the President was elected according to the Constitution. After a few months an election was held to elect members of the Islamic Consultative Assembly [Majlis]. Ever since that time the people have been voting to elect members of the Assembly of Experts, presidents, MPs and members of City and Village Councils. It is the people who take part in the elections and make a decision. Everything is up to the people. This shows the importance of the presence of the people.

Over the course of these years, different administrations and political tastes were voted into office - both in the Majlis and in the executive branch. Some of them were not completely in line with the principles of the Islamic Republic. But the great capacity of the Islamic Republic has managed to overcome these problems without showing impatience. It has managed to resolve all these problems due to the presence of the people, their faith and their commitment to the Islamic Republic. That is to say, the people consider themselves the owner of the country. In the past it was constantly said, "The country has an owner." They meant that a particular emir, ruler or sultan was the owner of the country. The people were given no role to play. They were in charge of nothing. Thanks to the Revolution, today the people know that the country has an owner and that the people themselves are the owner of the country.

When we go over the 32-year experience of the Revolution, we understand the depth of Imam Khomeini's wisdom and prudence. Why? Because any government like the Islamic Republic - with the same lofty ideals, with the same opposition to the arrogant powers and international injustice, with the same resistance against the satans of power throughout the world - would have strong enemies. They create challenges. They create problems. If such a government wants to prevail, it needs a strong guardian force so that it can resist, make progress and avoid stagnation. Thanks to the prudence of Imam Khomeini - which he had extracted from Islam - this guardian force was the will, determination and presence of the people. Therefore, the Islamic Republic overcame the challenges. One can confidently say that the Islamic Republic has triumphed over all hard and soft challenges it has been confronted with and by Allah's favor and grace, it will overcome the challenges it faces in the future.

One of the great challenges that the country was faced with in the beginning of the Revolution was the eight-year imposed war. Eight years is not a joke. They imposed an eight-year war on this country. Due to the lack of preparedness which is natural at the beginning of a revolution, any revolution would have been defeated if it had been faced with such a challenge. But our dear country and the holy Islamic Republic was not defeated. It gained victory. The war was managed by the people. The Army, the Islamic Revolution's Guards Corps and other forces of the Islamic Republic were dependent on the people. They were relying on the faith, dedication and sincerity of the people. The people were prepared to make sacrifices with exemplary and unforgettable sincerity at and behind the frontline. Unfortunately those who were young at that time do not go over the events of those days. It is very good to remember those outstanding and beautiful events.

When I was in the city of Kermanshah [at that time], I was told that Jafarabad had been bombed and members of a family were stuck under rubble. The local officials went there and rescued them. Later on the father of the family, who was an old man, goes to the officials to express his gratitude. He goes there and says that he is grateful to the officials for helping him. The officials tell him to give them a list of what he has lost in the bombing so that they can recompense him. The old man tells them, "Fellow citizen, it is a pity you are saying that. Do you think I came here for material gain?" [The Supreme Leader says this in the local dialect] Notice that he was from Kermanshah. This is the way a heavenly person would respond. There are many such examples in your city and province. Such examples can be found in operational areas in the western, south western and north western parts of the country. These are the things that cannot be found among other nations. Such outstanding examples cannot be found elsewhere in such large numbers. It was the people who managed the war. They were involved in the affairs of the country.

Another great challenge was the economic pressure and sanctions which were imposed on us. Today they speak about sanctions. Sanctions are not new to us. The unilateral sanctions by America and European countries started from the first year of the Revolution. These sanctions and restrictions reached their peak during the war. I said once that we wanted to import barbed wire from abroad. The cargo had to be delivered through the Soviet soil, but the Soviet Union would not allow the cargo to be delivered through their soil in spite of the fact that it was neither a military cargo nor could it be used for aggressive purposes. It was just barbed wire. This shows how many restrictions they had imposed on our country. They imposed sanctions on us in all economic areas. Their purpose was to bring the Iranian nation to its knees. Their purpose was to bring to the Islamic Republic to its knees. But the Islamic Republic brought all those policies and policy-makers to their knees by relying on the patience and insight of you dear people.

We managed to turn these limitations into an opportunity. These prohibitions, sanctions and limitations caused us to achieve advances in all areas of innovation, advances which the regional countries could not achieve over the course of many years. Our nation, our people and our youth acquired knowledge. I can cite examples which show the situation of other revolutions, but there is not enough time now. Maybe I will discuss the issue in other meetings. The revolutions that happened in certain countries in 1970s - a few years before our Revolution took place - were in a pathetic situation. They were not comparable to our Revolution. Our great Revolution managed to make such progress.

Another challenge, which was of course more complicated, was the fitnas that they caused. The fitna of Tir 18, 1378 and the fitna of the year 1388, which were caused in Tehran with a 10-year interval, are the examples. They were hoping to defeat the Islamic Republic with these fitnas. They were hoping to deliver a blow to the Islamic Republic, but the opposite happened. In the fitna of Tir 18, five days after the seditionists has started their work, the people carried out that great movement on the 23rd of Tir not only in Tehran but also in other cities of the country. In the fitna of the year 1388, two days after the events of the day of Ashura, that great event happened on the 9th of Dey. At that time certain foreign observers, who had seen the event up close, wrote in western printed press that what happened in Iran on the 9th of Dey had been unprecedented since the funeral ceremony of Imam Khomeini in terms of the presence of the people. This was what the people did. This shows the effectiveness of the presence of the people.

The nuclear issue is another challenge. The determination and support of the people were the firm wall that gave courage and strength to our government officials to stand up against the bullying and imposition of the enemies in the nuclear issue. It was the powerful base among the people that brought about this great achievement for the country.

Science and technology were another crucial area in which our honorable people played a role and nobody would have thought this area would have such potential for the involvement of the people. Who would have thought our youth would enter the arena like this? As soon as the movement for production of knowledge and the soft movement were proposed to outstanding academic figures, such a great movement was initiated that a general discourse was created and general movement began. Today in every part of the country, in different provinces, in small and big cities, especially in scientific and sensitive centers, our youth are engaged in great sensitive projects in scientific and technological areas. There are certain projects which have been completed and there are certain other projects which are in the process of being completed. The Iranian will see the results. These scientific endeavors are a source of self-confidence for the Iranian nation. They are a source of economic thriving. Highly profitable business activities are the result of scientific advances. Our youth entered this arena. And global statistics confirmed this fact. Of course our government officials are also making valuable efforts.

Well, I would like to draw two conclusions from this part of my speech. First, the entire world and our western enemies should know that the Islamic Republic is a powerful government because of the presence of the people. Western politicians should not confuse our country with certain countries that carried out a revolution but changed their path later on the way westerners wished. Here, it is the people who decide. Here, the people - from different parts of the country and from different social backgrounds - play a role in the Revolution and their willpower and determination make a difference. If a government official decides to deviate from the path and starts a movement against the revolutionary movement, the people will eliminate him. This is what the people of the world and politicians of different countries should know. Of course they know this and they have felt it too. The presence of people like you has given power and strength to the Islamic Republic. I deem it necessary to thank you for your warm and sincere presence in these streets and I also apologize to you. I really do not want our people to go to such trouble to welcome me. [People shout, "We are not like the people of Kufa to leave Ali alone" [reference to Imam Ali (a.s.)] and "The blood that is in our veins is a gift to our Leader."] Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you. Therefore, the first conclusion about the presence of the people is that others - the entire world and politicians of arrogant and non-arrogant countries - should know that this is what Iran is. They are faced with the people and their national willpower.

I would like to address the second conclusion to all honorable officials of the country. Wherever government officials of the country managed to identify and make use of the capabilities of the people, we were successful. Wherever there was a failure, it was because we did not manage to prepare the ground for the presence of the people. We do not have any shortage of unresolved issues. Regarding different issues of the country, our government officials should try to find ways of preparing the ground for the presence of the people in a skillful, careful and innovative way, so that every youth, every old person, every man and every woman can make a contribution. During difficult stages of the war, whenever this happened, the way was opened: there were some people who opened the way. It is possible to do so in different areas, including economic areas. Our economy and our production can be improved by several times by relying on the determination, money, innovation and motivation of the people. The policies specified in Article 44 of the Constitution are based on this point. Certain goals have been specified for the future of the country. We named this decade "The Decade of Progress and Justice". We prepared the policies of Article 44. We prepared the 20-year strategic plan. We have prepared five-year development plans. All these policies are realistic. It is not the case that a number people sit down together write up five-year development plans and 20-year strategic plans on the basis of their illusions. No, these plans are based on the existing realities.

Well, these are the goals that have been specified. If the ground is prepared for the people to step in and work towards these goals, it will be possible to achieve the goals even sooner than planned. How can we prepare the ground for the presence of the people? This is the main point. This is where our government officials should provide the people with practical, understandable and successfully tested formulas. It is possible to do these things in all areas. All three branches of government can do this in their own ways. They can make use of the innovation, ideas, energy and motivation of the people and the dynamism of our youth - who make up a large portion of our population. This is among the things that our government officials will do through transparent mechanisms. Of course certain things have been done in different areas. Certain paths have been opened up. But it is possible to work harder and prepare the ground for the presence of all our people so that a youth, an old person, an industrialist or an innovative person knows his or her place in this public movement. Through such a mechanism it is possible to put everything in order, just as we have in the past.

Of course the people have specific expectations and these expectations are legitimate. Our government officials should not take the people for granted. The presence and preparedness of the people is a great blessing and we should all appreciate this blessing. Our government officials should have pure intentions of rendering services to the people. The people expect our government officials - especially high-ranking officials - to have unity and to cooperate with each other. They expect our government officials - working at high and middle levels of the government - to focus on national priorities. They expect government officials to prioritize primary issues and to avoid getting busy with secondary issues. They expect government officials to make non-stop efforts. The people expect honesty. They expect government officials to keep their promises. They expect avoidance of disputes. They expect government officials to avoid getting busy with secondary and unimportant issues. They expect government officials to be trustworthy and to confront lawbreakers and traitors. These are at the top of the list of public demands. If we government officials cannot do something - for example we cannot build a road or a dam or take a particular economic action - we should just tell the people that we cannot do it and the people will not complain. The people complain when we fail to confront lawbreakers and pursue justice. The people do not like these things. These things make them angry. Wise actions, firm determination, pursuing justice and fighting official and financial corruption are very important. In the case of the recent banking embezzlement which attracted everybody's attention, I see that the three branches of government are fortunately cooperating very well with each other. All three branches are working together in order to follow up the issue. They should pursue this issue and bring it to a conclusion. They should punish the perpetrator - whoever he is - and make him an example for other people. Of course prevention is the most important thing to do when it comes to fighting corruption. But if we fail to prevent corruption and it happens, then the solution is to follow it up. There should be no negligence in this regard and by Allah's favor, care will be taken not to prevent negligence.

The issue of Islamic culture and revolutionary values is important and it is also what the people expect. In different parts of the country, not only families of our martyrs but also the majority of our people expect and demand that Islamic appearances and Islamic cultural norms be observed in society. Particularly they expect our government officials to observe these things.

The issue of unemployment is also an important issue. Of course this issue is more serious in this province and certain other provinces of the country. In certain places better measures have been taken and by Allah's favor, these measures will be followed up. The issue of strengthening domestic production, the issue of agriculture, the issue of industry - these are the things that should be taken care of.

In this part of my speech I would like to speak about the upcoming parliamentary election. Elections are one of the manifestations of the presence of the people. Of course the election is three, four months from now. Hopefully I will have other opportunities to speak to the people in this regard and by Allah's favor, I will. I deem it necessary to point out that every election pumps new blood into the veins of the country and gives a new spirit to the nation. You should know this. And this is why the enemy has always tried for many years to eliminate or sideline elections. As far as I know, there was no election before which the enemy did not use his propaganda machine to sideline elections in Iran. In all elections they have done this in one way or another. You are vigilant and shrewd. You can see what they say and do in order to minimize voter turnout and discourage the people from taking part in elections. You will see the same thing in the next three, four months. You should know that elections are a great achievement for the country, for the Islamic Republic and for the people of Iran. The situation of the Majlis affects general conditions of the country. The Majlis is the center of decision-making in the country. All of these things show the importance of elections.

As far as elections are concerned, there are two issues which are the most important of all. The first issue is the presence of the people and the massive turnout rate in our elections. The second issue is respecting the law and the votes of the people. It is wrong to accept the results of an election only if they are favorable to us. "And if the truth be on their side, they come to him quickly, obedient." [The Holy Quran, 24: 49] It is wrong to accept the law only when we are in the right and only when those who come to power are the people we support. Similarly it is wrong to violate the law if we do not support those who have been elected. It is wrong to reject the law and public vote altogether. This was true of the fitna of the year 1388. They claimed that they wanted the law to be implemented, but the people did not vote for them. The majority of the people voted for somebody else, so they started protesting the results. They made the people anxious for a while and they made the enemy happy. Of course at the end, they could not stand up against the people and they retreated.

This was the sin committed by the seditionists of the year 1388: they failed to accept the law and the votes of the people. A candidate may have objections to an election. Nothing is wrong with this, but there are legal ways in which these objections can be raised and followed up. If we accept the law, we must do as the law says. This is an essential point.

Another point is to vote for dedicated, faithful and caring candidates and this is a very important point. Hopefully there will be enough time to speak about this issue later on. The people should vote for candidates who are not affiliated with the centers of wealth and power. The people should really want the candidates they vote for. They must act on the basis of their conscience, religious beliefs and revolutionary duties. There are many things that should be discussed in this regard.

As for the regional issues, you have heard many things about the developments in Islamic countries - in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain and other countries. You have heard a lot of analyses. I have also discussed these issues on several occasions. Today I would like to make a few points in this regard. One point is that one of the main outcomes of these movements and events in Egypt, Tunisia and other countries is that the policies of the arrogant powers have been defeated. This is the basis of the issue. For many years America was ruling the region. The governments of Egypt and Tunisia - and recently Gaddafi who appeared to be a revolutionary figure with a long record of revolutionary activities as well as rulers of certain other countries - were listening to America's orders. America had no rivals in the region. This situation changed and a new page was turned. Of course the Americans are trying their best in the hope that they will manage to take control of the situation, but their efforts are futile. Nations have awakened. Nations have become courageous. Nobody can fight the willpower of nations. This is the first and the most important issue.

The second point is that our dear people who live in different parts of the country should know that the events which happen in our country have a strong effect on these countries. They watch our country. If we made progress, if we establish security, if we have the cooperation of the people, if we enjoy national self-confidence and if we have national unity, these nations will move in the same direction. But if, God forbid, we suffer from insecurity, weaknesses, stagnation and discord - and this is exactly what the enemy wants - then they will become disappointed and they will lose their dynamism. Therefore, we have an important responsibility in this regard and we must move ahead in a way that these nations hold us in high regard and become dynamic and hopeful about the future. And today the Iranian nation is recognized as a role model.

The last point that I would like to make is related to the issues of the west. The event that is happening in America is an important event. The movement known as "Occupy Wall Street", which has created excitement among the American people, is important. They tried to present this movement as insignificant and they are still trying to do so. Until two, three weeks after the movement, among all important newspapers of America, only one newspaper published a report on this movement. The rest of their newspapers stayed silent. The same gentlemen who claim to support freedom of expression, the same people who hugely magnify everything that happens in every part of the world - of course only if this is in line with their policies - stayed completely silent about such a great movement. But they realized that they did not have a choice. They were forced to report the news. They were forced to do so by thousands of people who have gathered on Wall Street in New York and in other cities and states of America. Of course they want to ride the waves of the movement. In any case, the issue is an important issue.

One issue is that the corruption of capitalism has become tangible and visible to the people of America. They may manage to suppress this movement, but they cannot destroy the roots of the movement. After all, one day this movement will thrive to the extent that the capitalist system of America and the west will be completely razed to the ground.

The brutality of the corrupt capitalist system is not just limited to the people of Afghanistan, Iraq and other countries. They do not even show mercy to their own people. In the thousands-strong demonstrations in New York, the people were carrying a placard which said, "We are the 99 percent." This means that 99 percent of the people of America have to follow the other one percent of the American population. The wars on Iraq and Afghanistan were waged by one percent of the American population, but the other 99 percent had to suffer the casualties and pay the money. This is what has awakened the people and made them protest. Of course the propaganda methods and the psychological warfare of American officials, the CIA and others are extremely oppressive and cruel. They might suppress the protests. But the truth was revealed and it will be revealed even more. Contrary to all those claims, this is what the capitalist system is. This is what western liberal democracy is.

Israel is being supported by one percent of the Americans. The people of America are not interested in supporting Israel. They are not interested in paying the money to keep the cancerous tumor, the fake Israeli regime, in power in the region. They way they treated the movement is also interesting. They first kept silent about the movement and then they crushed it cruelly - both in America and in certain European countries. In England, brutality was so much that one would not see even one tenth of it in backward countries which are ruled by dictatorial regimes. But then these people are claiming to support human rights. They are claiming to support freedom of expression. They are claiming to support freedom of assembly. They claim to support all people throughout the world. Those who were advising us to follow the methods of the capitalist system should take a look at these realities and see what capitalism is: a complete dead end. Today capitalism has reached a dead end. It might take years for the consequences to emerge, but the crisis in the west is in full swing.

The world is at a historic juncture. Our dear nation, Muslim nations and the great Islamic Ummah can play a role. This is where Islam, Islamic teachings and the method of Islam can prove useful to the people of the world. This is where the Islamic Republic can establish its position as a role model for the people of the world.

Dear God, by the blessedness of Muhammad (s.w.a.) and his household, bestow Your blessings on the Iranian nation and government officials. Dear God, You have promised assistance for Your pure servants, so bestow complete assistance on the Iranian nation. Dear God, bestow Your blessings and grace on the people of this city and this province and on these pure hearts. Dear God, help our youth. Dear God, include us among the people about whom You have said, "He shall love them and they shall love Him." [The Holy Quran, 5: 54] Dear God, make the holy heart of the Imam of the Age satisfied with us.

Greetings be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings

Supreme Leader: Bright Iranian talent must reappear

Supreme Leader: Bright Iranian talent must reappear
2011/10/18 - 17:00

Top local personalities in Kermanshah province met with the Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei Tuesday morning in the seventh day of the IR Leader's landmark provincial visit.

The meeting was commenced by short speeches by 13 top personalities in which they expressed their views concerning different socio-political and economic issues.

Following the speeches, Ayatollah Khamenei delivered a speech, saying the grounds were prepared for the advance of the nation towards bright peaks.

Ayatollah Khamenei appreciated the young elites for their ambitious goals in drawing the prospects of the country and expressed hope the nation would enjoy more bountiful human assets in scientific and cultural domains in future.

Ayatollah Khamenei described the Kermanshah province as the handsome face of Iran in art, culture and literature, adding that, given the heroic spirit of the provincial population and the revolutionary ambience of the province, it has convened any praiseworthy features possible.

However, Ayatollah Khamenei expressed regret that the province has not been paid its deserved publicity attention, calling for more publicity efforts in this regard by the relevant authorities, including the IRIB.

Ayatollah Khamenei said the society must get accustomed to respect and dignify top personalities and holders of innovative minds, adding that he aims by his regular sessions with top Iranian personalities to set a pattern for the young generation.

The Islamic Revolution Leader said the international hegemony, motivated by the dangerous Protocols of Zion, seeks to promote deviant and unworthy models for world young generations, adding that the practice was running on premeditated policies.

Ayatollah Khamenei said a second aim he sought through the meetings was to make known the innate talent of the Iranian nation and to counter the old colonial policy of humiliating the Iranian nation and presenting it as inefficient.

"The elites of the nation have invalidated the anti-Iranian policy through their magnificent scientific and technological advances," the IR Leader said.

Ayatollah Khamenei said the Iranian level of talent scored higher than the mean international levels, adding that at time when the west was suffering an absolutely dark era in terms of knowledge and science, Iran was on the vanguards of science across the Muslim world.

"The historical reality points to abundant human talents in this corner of the world; the innate, bright talent must reappear once more," the IR Leader urged.

Ayatollah Khamenei touched on the international reports that Iran was experiencing a speed of progress several times the mean international growth speed, adding that Iran, having relied on its young talents, will manage to reach the current frontiers of science and will surpass them to provide the human community with newer scientific prospects

Ayatollah Khamenei said the ultimate goal of such advances shall be to serve human sublimity. "Nevertheless the bullies and capitalists abuse science and art so that the Hollywood, as the world center of cinema, has come to be at the service of human decadence and the nations of Afghanistan and Iraq only get bombs and chemical weapons from the western science," the IR Leader deplored.

Ayatollah Khamenei said science and art were Divine blessings in essence, adding that the Iranian nation and the Islamic Republic government will put the lofty phenomena at the service of Islam, spirituality and human sublimity.
