Den of espionage
Den of espionage
Five years before the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, the US Central Intelligence Agency, CIA, launched a coup in Chile to overthrow Salvador Allende government. The plot was implemented successfully.
27 years after the coup, CIA published documents which revealed that the US embassy in Chile was behind the plot and the plan of the coup had been drawn up by the American officials including Henry Kissinger, Zbigniew Brezezinski and the then US ambassador in the country.
Only five years after the Chile coup, in December 1979, the US government disappointed by the Pahlavi regime appointed Heiser and Gast to launch a similar coup in Iran.
The US embassies which were behind the overthrow of the legal governments in Berlin, Santiago, Athena, Prague and Tehran planned to down the newly-established Islamic Republic in Iran.
According to the documents, staffs of the US embassy in Tehran were violating the international protocols by trying to establish connections with opponents of the Islamic Republic.
Illegal measures of the US embassy in Tehran prompted Iranian students to capture the den of espionage and bring an end to their plots.
The late Imam Khomeini approved the move and assured that their decision to capture the embassy was right by calling it a second revolution.
Documents recovered from the US embassy unveiled the secret relations of several Iranian personalities with US and showed they were active in Iran as spies.
US has a long record of interference in the Iranian history.
In November 4, 1964, Imam Khomeini (PBUH) was sent to exile for his protests over a bill by the deposed Shah regime called 'capitulation bill' which would grant US nationals in Iran immunity over any offenses.
On January 26, 1963, series of measures were adopted by the Shah under the US orders (in the framework of Kennedy's "Alliance for Progress" plan) which in many ways destroyed the economic basis of the country. Imam Khomeini urged the nation to protest the move.
The national protest which began under the leadership of Imam Khomeini (upon whom be peace) alarmed America who realized that this movement would lead to continuous, bloody revolution against the United States and its protégé, the regime in Iran.
The realities prompted the US administration to decide to revive an abandoned Capitulation Bill and establish "consular judicial rights" in Iran so that US personnel could, with peace of mind, directly protect the Shah's throne and their interests in this part of the world. They were also immune from any legal prosecution.
The approval of the Capitulation Bill by the Senate and the Parliament was never really made public. The media, under government censorship, refrained from divulging it.
A short time later, an internal parliamentary publication containing the full text of speeches and discussions by members of Parliament and the Prime Minister on this matter reached Imam Khomeini, disturbing and upsetting him. The news of Imam's distress gradually spread. Many people went to Qum to discover the reason for his concern.
October 26, 1964, the day of the anniversary of Hazrat Fatima's birthday and the birthday of Imam Khomeini himself, arrived. A deluge of people swept into Qum from all over the country to listen to Imam's speech.
As he spoke his voice rose:
"Gentlemen, I warn you of danger!
Iranian army, I warn you of danger!
Iranian politicians, I warn you of danger!
Iranian merchants, I warn you of danger!
`Ulama of Iran, maraji' of Islam, I warn you of danger!
Scholars, religious students! Centers of religious learning, Najaf, Qum, Mashhad, Tehran, Shiraz! I warn you of danger!.....
If our country is under American occupation then tell us....
All our troubles today are caused by this America. All our troubles today are caused by this Israel. Israel itself derives from America."
At the end of his epic speech, Imam Khomeini deprecated the approval of the bill by the representatives in the two houses of the Parliament.
This passionate, revolutionary discourse was, until that day, without precedent in the history of the movement, and it shook not only the foundations of the Shah's despotic rule but also the White House in Washington.
In this speech, Imam Khomeini made clear his categorical and uncompromising stance against Eastern and Western blocks and confirmed the "No East, No West" policy which he adhered to until the end of his life.
He illustrated his position vis-a-vis imperialist governments in this way: "America is worse than Britain, Britain is worse than America and the Soviet Union is worse than both of them. Each one is worse than the other; each one is more abominable than the other. But today we are concerned with this malicious entity which is America. Let the American President know that in the eyes of the Iranian nation, he is the most repulsive member of the human race today because of the injustice he has imposed on our Muslim nation."
In addition to this historic speech, Imam Khomeini issued a declaration which revealed more fully the regime's affiliation to the US and the latter's interference in the internal affairs of Iran.
On the night of November 3, 1964, hundreds of commandos and armed paratroopers surrounded Imam's house in Qum, took him and transferred him to Tehran. On November 4 the leader of the movement was expelled from his country for the 'crime' of defending the independence of his homeland and protest against the US interference.
Fourteen years after Imam's expulsion from Iran (November 4, 1978), tens of thousands of high school and university students in the grounds of Tehran University and the surrounding streets shook Tehran with the cries of "Death to the Shah," "Long Live Khomeini" and "Death to America."
The US-backed army clamped down on the protests and many were martyred however the revolution ran its course to victory on February 11, 1979 (Bahman 22, 1357 AHS).
The revolution released the anti-arogance energy of the masses and provided the necessary motivation for the capture of a premises which had long violated the rights of the Iranian nation and trampled on their interests.
The November 4, the day of capture of the den of espionage has been called day of combat against world arrogance in the Iranian calendar.
Every year, thousands of students and other people gather before the premises of the former embassy in protest at the US hostile policy against the Islamic Republic and its historical interference in the Iranian affairs.

Enemy maintaining a long term project
Enemy maintaining a long term project
2010/10/26 - 15:48
Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei told a large gathering of university students in Qom city Tuesday that enemies have definitely been maintaining a long term plan against Islam and the Islamic Revolution, adding that there are evidence several political upheavals in the country in the past, including those of 1999 and 2009, were outcomes of such long term projects.
Ayatollah Khamenei noted that the 2009 post-elections incidents helped the enemy to refurbish its projects and that the enemy had apparently taken each and every necessary precaution when it came to deal with the political sedition so as to meet its malicious goals however in God's favor, they lost to a vigilant, stand-by nation.
Ayatollah Khamenei said the world bullies appear to never get frustrated unlike their back to back defeats and for the same reason the Islamic establishment and the Iranian nation should put a long term strategic master plan in place to counter their ploys.
The IR Leader added that acquisition of religious and political insight would be the part and parcel of any such strategic planning, adding that religious insight would be acquired thorough a monotheistic view of the world under which the world embodies a purposeful system and human is supposed to live a purposeful life.
"Through the monotheistic view, life becomes gracious and meaningful while frustration turns pale knowing the fact that God would award any act of human being," Ayatollah Khamenei said.
"In contrast, the materialistic view of the world leads up to a loss of substantial purposes in human life as it defines life as accomplishment of joy or personal benefits and thereby triggers frustration in those who fail to get such aims," the IR Leader added.
As for political insight, Ayatollah Khamenei invoked several quotes from Nahj al-Bilaqa, the renowned quotes book of Imam Ali (A.S.) and said that by political insight, it was meant to get an accurate grasp of political developments and appraise them in a precise manner.
Ayatollah Khamenei then recounted the Siffin incident in 657 when Muawiya ordered his soldiers to fix copies of Koran on the points of their lances in a successful trick to fool the army of Imam Ali (A.S.). "In that incident, some failed to grasp the realities on the ground and closed their eyes to crystal clear truths," Ayatollah Khamenei said.
The IR Leader made a parallel between the seventh century incident and the last year's post election upheavals, saying that in the latter, some individuals mistakenly and in absence of political insight claimed a fraud.
"They were required to provide evidence and pursue their claim though a lawful way but they failed. Even after an extension of legal deadline for election complaints and an overture call on the complainants to send their delegates to watch over a recount of votes, they refused to follow the path of law and helped make it clear they are in breach of law," Ayatollah Khamenei regretted.
Ayatollah Khamenei noted that it was not difficult to judge their conduct and that anyone who contravenes the law or the national interests shall be condemned if fairly judged.
Ayatollah Khamenei then warned about an enemy project to blacken the country's atmosphere and distort realities concerning the country's progressive development, adding that the Iranian youths are supposed to get a precise grasp of realities and furnish their surrounding with a neat political insight into the developments.
Ayatollah Khamenei then said the enemy applied complex methods to mislead the masses, including by a tailored blend of true and false information "which is regrettably duplicated inside the country by some individuals, either knowingly or inadvertently."
Ayatollah Khamenei noted however that sometimes some individuals might know the realities but fail to point them out due to a lack of will on their part which might be bred by one of carnal desires, personal interests, stubbornness or pursuit of convenience.
The IR Leader in the same regard added that some individuals who at present run afar from the path of Islamic Revolution and serve anti-revolutionists were once radical revolutionists however they suffered the turnaround due to ignorance of God and negligence of duty.
He also urged the revolutionary youths to distinguish between dissidents and those suffering from such negligence.
Ayatollah Khamenei then lauded the youths of Qom province for their sophisticated treatment of a smart enemy scheme early in the 1979 revolution where the enemy sought to process an antithesis out of the Qom city, the very hub of revolution, so as to present it as an anti-revolution center but failed after the youths got an accurate analysis of the situation.
"The enemy replicated the scheme once more in Qom after the demise of Imam Khomeini but to no avail, again due to vigilance of the youths," Ayatollah Khamenei appreciated.
Ayatollah Khamenei then turned to a discussion of tragic outcomes of the western approach to human life, saying that those who once claimed they sought to bring welfare and calm to human have abused and abuse their technologically-driven power and wealth to commit such crimes historically rare.
"The realities on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan show that the western domineering powers are actually enemy of human being," the IR Leader added.
The Iranian nation however seeks to tread an otherwise path, Ayatollah Khamenei said, adding that the nation would keep on the blessed path until it accomplishes all the objectives of Islam and Islamic Revolution.

Scholars urged to reproduce Islamic teachings
Scholars urged to reproduce Islamic teachings
2010/10/25 - 18:05
Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei on Monday recommended the theologians to reproduce the lofty Islamic teachings to keep up with progress of science and technology.
Islamic Revolution Leader made the remarks in a meeting with a group of non-Iranian clerics residing and studying in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Ayatollah Khamenei said that acquaintance of world nations with the lofty teachings of Islam will bring them independence, identity, dignity, progress, freedom and authority for the Islamic Ummah.
"The Islamic Revolution from the early stage campaigned for salvation from arrogance and by triumph of the Islamic Revolution, the Muslim nations in the East and West felt the enlivening message and opening of a new way ahead."
"The theological students from about 100 countries are studying in the holy city of Qom which have prepared grounds for acquaintance of world nations with the Islamic Republic of Iran," Islamic Revolution Leader said.
The Islamic Revolution is not a mere political institution to be exported to other parts of the world through political or military means, said the Leader adding that Iran has dismissed the wrong idea from export of revolution since the beginning.
"The foreign theological students in Qom should spare no effort to attain scientific and educational knowledge as Islamic teachings will capture the heart of devoted people," he added.
Ayatollah Khamenei said that it is about 200 years that the colonial and arrogance apparatus are striving to humiliate and ignore the Muslim nations but the Islamic Revolution revived historical concepts as dignity, justice, resistance and Islamic identity in the mind of Islamic Ummah.
"Patience and resistance were among the messages of Almighty God to Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and the late Imam Khomeini followed the same message in the course of the movement of the Iranian nation since 1963 which culminated in 1979."
"The Late Imam Khomeini strongly promoted the Islamic teachings and never hesitated to deal with existing problems and difficulties, Ayatollah Khamenei said, adding that in the past 30 years since victory of the Islamic Revolution, the Iranian nation stood against the western economic sanctions and made them ineffective.
Islamic Revolution Leader said that foreign theological students in Qom are the core of the International Scientific-Islamic Society who should seize this great opportunity to carry out their divine duties.

'Knowledge main pillar of seminaries'
'Knowledge main pillar of seminaries'
2010/10/25 - 10:58
Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei said knowledge is the real identity of seminaries, urging compliance with the perquisites of such a knowledge-based context.
"The main pillar of seminaries is based on knowledge and therefore the seminary should be in conformity with "knowledge-oriented" requirements, said Ayatollah Khamenei in a meeting with scholars, clerics and students of Qom's seminaries on Sunday.
Islamic Revolution Leader added that seminaries should welcome questions and doubtful challenges over various issues and said that such an approach would show the consistency of seminaries to their knowledge-based identity.
Ayatollah Khamenei pointed out that all "knowledge-oriented" bodies, including seminaries, should openly face challenging questions.
Islamic Revolution Leader referred to very serious and challenging arguments throughout the history of the seminaries and said, "This valuable approach should be maintained in different fields.”
Ayatollah Khamenei stressed the importance of promoting free thinking in seminaries, saying, "Free thinking is the result of a knowledge-based mind and prejudice in the field of knowledge is meaningless."
Islamic Revolution Leader described as a big accusation certain remarks about the lack of a free atmosphere for criticism in seminaries and said people of thought and contemplation are free to express their views and thoughts in all fields.
Ayatollah Khamenei said opposing the suppression of views has always been an admirable tradition in seminaries and emphasized, "Seminaries should not use thoughtless ways to reject opposing views.”
"You should face false opinions with firmness and prudence," Ayatollah Khamenei further explained.
Islamic Revolution Leader noted that education in seminaries should be based on thought, research and study, and welcomed modern methods in teaching and the production of science.
Ayatollah Khamenei pointed to the hostility of arrogant powers, particularly the US and the Zionist regime, towards the spreading of religion and stated, "Measures such as the offensive cartoons of the holy Prophet and the burning of the Holy Qur'an show the deep evil nature of the enemies of Islam."
"Seminaries cannot keep silent on such enmities and will take a vigilant stance on arrogant powers," Ayatollah Khamenei emphasized.
Islamic Revolution Leader also urged the religious elite to draw up strategies for the educational, cultural and social development of Iran.

Enemies lagging behind fast advancing Iran
Enemies lagging behind fast advancing Iran
2010/10/24 - 19:46
Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei told a large gathering of Basij forces Sunday in Qom city that enemies of the Islamic Republic appear to be lagging behind the fast advancing Iranian nation and thereby they resort to massive propaganda to play down the recent magnificent advances of the Islamic Iran.
Ayatollah Khamenei noted however that unlike the desire of the enemies, the Iranian nation would continue the irreversible progress towards a bright future.
Ayatollah Khamenei described the Basij as a divinely assisted phenomenon which took shape out of thought and practice of the unparalleled personality of the contemporary history, Imam Ruhollah Mousawi Khomeini "who used to believe in the might of God and in the same mood, he trusted people until the Islamic Revolution incredibly got victory after people took to the scene."
The IR Leader said the Basij must live up to three requirements, namely acquisition of political insight, sincerity and timely and adequate practice. Ayatollah Khamenei lauded the public force for promoting its ability and insight amid complicated enemy ploys, particularly during the last year's seditious upheavals.
The IR Leader in the same regard noted that personalities are not a safe stand to rely upon in discerning or identifying the truth rather there have been times when even distinguished figures have gone astray. "Truth can be discerned and identified by insight," Ayatollah Khamenei added.
The Islamic Revolution Leader then quoted Imam Khomeini as saying that if he had abandoned Islam, people would have turned their back to him, and by the quote, he concluded that Islam provides the parameter for distinguishing the truth from the falsehood.
Ayatollah Khamenei identified sincerity as another code of conduct for Basij, adding that sincerity has been achieved one an individual only seeks the satisfaction of God, free from any personal, partisan, or familial reservations.
Ayatollah Khamenei added: "One of the ways of understanding issues correctly is to see what program and agenda the enemy follows."
"Today, one of the main lines of the enemy's agenda within the soft war is to show the country's realities upside down," he said.
Referring to the enemy's broad propaganda to show the real scene of Islamic Iran inverted, the IR Leader stressed: "This shows the enemy's weakness and their failure in front of the great and speedy movement of the nation."
"Of course, this propaganda has increased in recent years because the officials and the government have pursued the slogans of the Revolution more strictly and seriously; and the line of Imam and Islamic Revolution and working for people is much more remarkable," he added.
Regarding foreign policy, he said that opponents of the Islamic system and some masters of the last year's sedition once said amid election campaigns that Iran had become debased and disreputable while today the reputation of the Islamic Republic of Iran among the world's nations not only has not declined but also has increased.
The IR Leader considered the unique welcome of the Lebanese people to the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran as an example of this reality, stressing: "This magnificent welcome will not take place for any president of a country anywhere in the world."
"Today if the prominent officials of the Islamic system visit any Islamic country and the atmosphere is left open for people, a welcome similar to that of the Lebanese people will take place," Ayatollah Khamenei said.
He regarded these issues as grandeur and dignity of the Iranian nation, adding: "If the government was a government cut off from people and was not supported by millions of determined youths, definitely such an event would not happen in Lebanon."
"The unstoppable movement of the Iranian nation in the line of Islam and Quran promises a bright and progressive future for the Islamic Iran and this issue will affect the Islamic world and cause further awakening of Muslim nations," the IR Leader said.

The Supreme Leader’s View of Monotheism
Part one: Monotheism and the world view behind it
Idiomatic meaning of monotheism
According to Quranic culture and teachings, monotheism is the belief that the Exalted One has created the world and man and that He is controlling creation, laws of nature and daily lives of human beings.
Monotheism is the belief that the complex, amazing and orderly system of creation – including galaxies, nebulas, great celestial black holes, innumerable planets and millions of planetary systems as well as tiny cells that make up living creatures and tiny chemical combinations that make up matter – is the result of a higher thought, wisdom and power and that it was not an accident that gave rise to this system. There is so much order in this great, diverse and complex system that thousands of laws have been extracted so far. This is because when there is inviolable order, it is possible to extract absolute natural laws from that order. This belief is acceptable to any healthy mind and any wise and thinking person who does not make impulsive decisions or prejudgments. This higher thought and wisdom and this great, endless and indescribable power that has given rise to this amazing and complex system is not an idol built by man, a limited human being who claims to be God or a legendary or mythical character. Rather, it is the Powerful and Eternal One – referred to as "God" in different faiths – whose characteristics are inferred from His signs. Therefore, He is the One whose existence can explain the power, will and organization behind this great and complex structure. He is also the One whose existence can prove that the Unique and Indescribable Designer is not a mortal being or the worthless things that is built by man. "He is Allah, besides Whom there is no god: The King, the Holy, the Giver of peace, the Granter of security, Guardian over all, the Mighty, the Supreme, the Possessor of every greatness. Glory be to Allah from what they set up (with Him). "
Monotheism means freedom of man from worshipping and obeying anything and anybody except God. It means breaking free from the domination of human systems. It means breaking the spell of fear of satanic and material powers. It means relying on the endless powers that God has bestowed on human beings and required them to make use of these powers as an inviolable obligation. It means having faith in the divine promise of victory for the oppressed against the oppressors and arrogant powers – on condition that they rise up, fight and resist. It means relying on God's mercy and not fearing the possibility of defeat. It means courting the hardships and dangers that lie in the way of divine promises and threaten human beings. It means considering the hardships as divine challenges and remaining hopeful about the definite ultimate victory. It means setting one's sights on the higher goal – namely, saving human societies from all kinds of oppression, discrimination, ignorance and polytheism – and seeking compensation from Allah the Exalted for the individual failures suffered on the path of God. In summary, monotheism means being connected to the endless ocean of divine power and wisdom and rushing towards the higher goal with hope and without anxiety. All the dignity and glory that have been promised for human beings will only be achieved in the presence of this faith and this clear and deep understanding of monotheism. In the absence of an appropriate understanding of monotheism and in the absence of ideological and practical commitment to monotheism, none of the divine promises for human beings will be fulfilled.
Reasons for the existence of God
One of the foundations of self-knowledge – self-knowledge in the sense of further knowledge of God – is that one should become familiar with one's self and weaknesses and with one's heartfelt love and needs. There is something in the hearts of people that point to the existence of God. What is it? It is the need to search for God, divine love and divine attraction. This is in the hearts of all of us. Even materialistic people have this feeling. But unaware people do not know what it is.
The fact that people run after attachment, affection and attraction is rooted in attraction to God, but this feeling is not strong enough in the hearts of unaware and ignorant people, and they do not understand this point.
The position of wisdom in theology
Monotheism is not limited to acknowledging the existence of the Almighty One. This is only the surface of monotheism. Deep monotheism is a boundless ocean in which God's saints were immersed. Monotheism is a very great realm. But even in this great realm Muslims, faithful people and monotheists have been demanded to move forward relying on wisdom, acumen and thinking. Wisdom and thinking can indeed help people move forward. Of course in different stages wisdom is equipped and fed with the light of the revelations, knowledge and teachings of God's saints. However, it is wisdom that moves forward. One will not get anywhere in the absence of wisdom.
The essential foundation of Islam
Whatever hardships and misfortunes that plaque the lives of Muslims and Muslim nations is the result of failure to live in the shade of monotheism. Monotheism is not just a mental concept. It is a real-world entity and a set of guidelines for life. It tells Muslims how to behave towards friends and enemies, how to behave in society and how to live. Some people think that having faith in monotheism is only related to afterlife. This is while having faith in monotheism is the factor that this world and this worldly life is based on.
The more Muslims move towards monotheism and worship of God, the more liberated they will be from different kinds of taghut [government that is not sanctioned by God]. Serving God is not consistent with serving others.
Monotheism in the Islamic world view
All schools of thought have a particular view, interpretation and perception of the world. This particular way of viewing the world and its quality is called a world view.
Monotheism is part of the Islamic world view. It is part of the Islamic ideology. Monotheism is like the soul of all Islamic rules. It is like the invisible air that fills all parts of the structure which is known as Islam. It is like clean and fresh blood that circulates in the veins of Islam or religion. This blood can be found in all tiny veins of Islam. You cannot find one single Islamic rule that is not imbued with monotheism in one way or another.
Islam believes that every element of the world – from tiny to big creatures and from the lowest levels of creation to the most dignified, powerful and thinking creatures called human beings – has been created by a very great power. There is a Truth that is beyond what people can see, beyond what the keen eyes of experimental sciences can observe and beyond all phenomena that is available to human senses. This Truth is superior, higher and more dignified than all the phenomena of the world, and all the phenomena in the world are the result of the power of this Truth. This superior Power is called "God" or "Allah". Therefore, the world is a reality that is not independent. It has not created itself. It is not the result of self-generation. Rather, a powerful hand has created these different phenomena, and the more advanced human knowledge becomes, the more these phenomena are manifested. The life of this Power has not been bestowed on It, and Its knowledge has not been learnt. This Power has full control over the world. What is the relationship between this Power and the elements of the world?
When the elements of the world are created, do they continue their existence the way a baby does? This is not the case. The elements of the world depend on this Power for every moment of their existence. And all creatures are created by this Power and are Its servants. This Power can control everything. It has created everything according to a particular order. It has created everything according to accurate laws of nature, and these laws are being discovered today by science.
In the Islamic world view, monotheism means that the world has a Creator. In other words, the world has a pure and sublime soul. The world has a Creator, and all elements of this world are the servants of that Creator, and the Creator has full control over these elements.
The position of creatures in the monotheistic ideology of Islam
The pure monotheistic ideology of Islam says that all creatures and objects have been created by a powerful hand. Everything and everybody are the servants of that Power. They are controlled by that Power. They must obey that Power. Nobody is allowed to bow to anyone except that Power, and nobody is allowed to force other people to bow to them. Just as people are not allowed to force other people to prostrate before them, they are not allowed to prostrate before other people. This is because in both cases their actions are against the truth.
Creation from the perspective of a monotheist
When a person becomes a Muslim, everything becomes a means to achieve a vast world – not the world after death, but the world of one's own thought and ideology which is as vast as God. Everything is a means to enable human beings to gain God's satisfaction. Worldly life, wealth, wellbeing and love lose their value for monotheists. They become valuable only when they can serve a divine cause. But when this love, wealth, position, life, child and honor cannot help a monotheist to fulfill his obligations or serve the cause of God, then they lose all their value.
Man in the Islamic world view
In the Islamic world view, man is considered to enjoy numerous talents. From an Islamic perspective, man can make indefinite progress in the arena of knowledge and unveiling the secrets of creation. He can make indefinite progress in passing through spiritual stages. He can go further than angels. He can reach the peaks of perfection in terms of different capabilities. If he worships God and obeys Him, these paths will be opened up in front of him. And if he obeys other people instead of God, his wings will be clipped, and he will no longer be able to fly. In all fields of knowledge, monotheism appears on the path of people and they become familiar with it. The early Muslims who developed a tendency towards monotheism in spite of the prevalent ignorance and polytheism of that era gained so much freedom that the doors of knowledge were opened up for them. They took the lead and the rest of humanity followed them into the realm of knowledge. Today the world and humanity owe their knowledge to Islam and to the monotheism of the early Muslims who were first to step into the realm of knowledge.
The secret behind the survival of monotheistic thought
There were many people throughout history who were opposed to the rule of God and monotheism on earth. How did divine prophets manage to overcome their enemies throughout history? How did the Children of Israel [Israelites] manage to rule the entire world in spite of all the pressure that was exerted on Moses, Shoaib, Joshua and Aaron? How did the Prophet of Islam (s.w.a.) – who was fighting single-handedly against the ignorant people of his time – manage to establish a government in Medina? How did he manage to spread monotheism to the entire world and create a new movement in history through his government? How did the Islamic Revolution succeed in spite of the opposition of the east and the west? How did the Islamic Revolution succeed in spite of the fact that it did not have a single supporter other than peoples in the entire material world? The secret behind the survival of monotheistic thought throughout history and the victory of Iran's Islamic Revolution is that there are some people among God's servants who are prepared to lay down their lives for the sake of this goal and this ideal. It is all due to the spirit of seeking martyrdom. If it had not been for the spirit of seeking martyrdom and if it had not been for the lives laid down for a lofty goal, neither the Islamic Revolution nor the Prophet of Islam (s.w.a.) would have achieved victory. Monotheism would not have achieved any success throughout history. This is why Allah the Exalted has set a precondition for all divine prophets and all divine faiths: "Surely Allah has bought of the believers their lives and their property for this, that they shall have the garden". [The Holy Quran, 9: 111] It is the spirit of seeking martyrdom that helps nations achieve victory.
Part two: People who deny monotheism
Degeneration of humanity
Polytheism is the biggest sin that an individual or society can commit. Allah the Exalted forgives all sins except polytheism. "Surely Allah does not forgive that any partner should be associated with Him, and forgives what is besides that to whomsoever He pleases." [The Holy Quran, 4: 48] In spite of the seriousness and magnitude of polytheism, there are many people in the world who commit this sin. This is due to the fact that unlike many other kinds of sins, various forms of this sin are not always familiar to people. Therefore, polytheism has been divided into two categories in Islamic narrations: Manifest and hidden. As a result, polytheism can be found in both ignorant and Islamic communities.
Polytheism in ignorant communities
In ignorant communities, everything is polytheistic. Every action of the people is contaminated with polytheism in such communities. This is because ignorant and non-Islamic communities are ruled by those who steer the movement of those communities towards non-divine entities. And this is why the rulers and all the people who follow them are in fact moving towards fire and annihilation.
In a polytheistic society, whenever a discussion is started about the relationship between the people and the Power that dominates the world, it naturally leads to discord among the people of that society – each of them goes after a particular god. A society that is built on the foundations of polytheism creates an unbridgeable gap and an impenetrable wall between its people.
Polytheism in Islamic communities
There may be polytheism in Islamic societies even if they are ruled by agents of God. The first instance of polytheism in an Islamic society – or a society that wants to be Islamic – appears when the officials of that society are prepared to approve and implement non-divine rules due to certain considerations or due to indifference or a pessimistic attitude towards the future, Islam and Muslims. This is an instance of polytheism – an instance of great polytheism. When the people who rule a Muslim society – which has been established in the name of Islam – are prepared give up God's rules for their interests, an instance of polytheism appears in that society: "They purchase not a trifling gain at the price of the revelations of Allah." [The Holy Quran, 3: 199] In spite of being populated by Muslims, this society is dominated by an instance of acute polytheism.
The necessity of identifying the meaning of polytheism
Imam Sajjad (a.s.) said, "The caliphs of the Umayyad dynasty let the people achieve faith, but they did not let them acquire knowledge of polytheism. This was because they wanted to prevent the people from recognizing polytheism in case they [the Umayyads] decided to promote it among the people." The Umayyad caliphs used to let religious scholars and the Infallible Imams (a.s.) speak about daily prayers, hajj, zakat, fasting, worship and the divine rules about these things. They used to provide them with the freedom to speak to the people about monotheism and prophethood, but they did not let anybody teach the people anything about the meaning of polytheism and its instances and manifestations. This was because if the people had learnt these things, they would have realized immediately that their rulers were polytheists. They would have realized that the rulers of the Umayyad dynasty were guiding them towards polytheism. They would have realized immediately that the rulers of the Umayyad dynasty were not sanctioned by God and that they were fighting against Him. They would have realized immediately that if they obeyed them, they would in fact become polytheists. This was why they did not let the people become familiar with the teachings related to polytheism.
Factors that cause polytheism
Allamah Majlesi (r.a.) says in the 44th volume of Bihar al-Anwar, "On the surface, the Quranic verses about polytheism are related to idols. But deeper meanings and interpretations point to oppressive rulers – those who called themselves caliphs in the name of righteousness and ruled Islamic communities. Next to the Infallible Imams (a.s.), these oppressive rulers claimed that they had a right to rule Muslim communities." Their claim was an instance of polytheism because the Infallible Imams (a.s.) were the representatives of God on earth, and they used to speak the words of God. Because the rulers considered themselves as God's representatives and claimed that they had a right to be an Imam, they were in fact idols and taghut. And everybody who obeys such people has in fact become a polytheist.
Rejecting claims of being children of God
What is bestowed on the people by the Holy Quran as religious beliefs is what plays a role in fulfilling divine goals. And what is rejected as corrupt beliefs is what plays a role in corruption of society. Rejection of corrupt beliefs means rejecting an avenue of corruption in society. According to sura Yunus, ayah 68, "They say: Allah has taken a son (to Himself)." Christians, Jews and polytheists of Quraysh, Arabia and other places would say that Allah the Exalted had chosen a child for Himself. Some people would say that God had a daughter. Others would say that He had a son. Yet others would say that He had both a son and a daughter. Some people would say that God had only one child. Others would say that He had an infinite number of children. These claims meant that there was somebody in the world who was not God's servant, but His child. Jews used to call Prophet Aziz "Aziz ibn Allah", which meant that they believed Prophet Aziz to be the son of God. They wanted to say that all creatures were God's servants, but Prophet Aziz was not. They claimed that Prophet Aziz was His son. Christians used to say the same thing about Christ. Similarly, the polytheists of Arabia used to say that Lat, Manat and Uzza were the daughters of God. The polytheists of Rome and Greece also attributed many children to God. All of them believed in this. That is to say, they divided creation into three camps: The camp of God, the camp of God's servants and creatures – considered to be submissive to Him – and the camp of God's children. Believing in the existence of a middle ground between God and human beings will lead to certain instances of corruption. This is in fact a pretext to let God's servants serve Him as well as His partner.
The reason behind materialistic people's rejection of monotheism
A faithful person believes that there is a superior and greater truth beyond what can be seen on the surface of things, and if it had not been for that truth, these phenomena would not have happened. Materialistic people say that they cannot be committed to anything other than what they can see. They say, "In spite of all our efforts at laboratories, we have not been able to find a sign of the entity that monotheists talk about." Materialistic people of the modern era believe that there is no other truth beyond matter. In fact they say these things because they have been intellectually and spiritually frustrated by the divine school. They believe that managing the lives of human beings, administering justice and eliminating discrimination are not possible unless through a materialistic school of thought. Therefore, they turn their back on the divine school of thought.
If a study were conducted about the intellectual state of those who believe in one of the –isms of modern world, the results would show that denying this truth is not because they are stubbornly opposed to God. These people either do not have a convincing rational reason for the existence of God, or they cannot accept the reasons for the existence of God. Often there is no rational reason for the other side of the argument either. There has never been any reason against the existence of God. There is nobody who presents a reason against the existence of God. Since the beginning of time up until today, not even a single person among all materialistic people of the world has said, "I will present a reason and prove that God does not exist." They just say, "Everybody is saying a different thing in this regard. It has not been proven to me that God exists." Or they say, "I did not understand or accept the reasons for His existence." The Holy Quran refers to the same thing: "They only conjecture". [The Holy Quran, 45: 24] They are just after thought and conjecture, otherwise they cannot reject the existence of God through reasoning.
The reason behind the tendency towards materialism
The reason behind the tendency towards materialist schools of thought is that materialists think that materialistic schools of thought are better able to manage the world. They say materialistic schools of thought are better able to eliminate oppression, discrimination, inequality and tyranny. Materialistic people say that religion is not able to do these things. Why do they say religion is not able to do these things? Because they do not know anything about the common conception of religion except what they have observed about the traditional and imitative conception that ordinary people have. To be brief, they do not have any information about religion. If they were asked what religion is, they would simply name a number of religions and say, "These things are like an opiate. They are equal to oppression. They cannot help solve the problems that people suffer from." It goes without saying that when one is faced with this kind of reasoning, the best and the most appropriate response is to say, "Yes, if you find a religion that copes with oppressors, cooperates with tyrants, fails to side with the oppressed even for a moment, fails to help solve the problems that people suffer from and does not have the slightest contribution to the future of the people, you can act as our representative and reject that religion wherever you find it. Do not accept that religion even for a moment because if religion has a divine orientation, it cannot be like that."
Obeying Satan
"And most surely the devils suggest to their friends that they should contend with you. And if you obey them, you shall most surely be polytheists." [The Holy Quran, 6: 121] The devils and the embodiments of evil inspire their friends, their allies and the members of their camp to challenge you. The devils and the embodiments of evil and corruption encourage their agents, companions, allies, and the members of their camp to debate with you, tease you and challenge you. What is your obligation when faced with Satan's companions? "If you obey them, you shall most surely be polytheists." Obeying Satan – that is, the core of evil against the Merciful One – causes people to become polytheists. Satan is against God. Obeying Satan or obeying the companions of Satan – namely, its mercenaries, the tools of its actions, its friends, the members of its camp and its servants – causes polytheism. "And if you obey them, you shall most surely be polytheists."
Does God love some people more than others?
"And the Jews and the Christians say: We are the sons of Allah and His beloved ones." [The Holy Quran, 5: 18] The Jews said that they were the sons of God and His friends. In response to their claims, Allah the Exalted points out one of their crimes. Allah the Exalted asks them why they murdered His messengers if they were His friends and relatives. "Why then did you kill Allah's Prophets?" [The Holy Quran, 2: 91] Allah the Exalted asks them why they killed His chosen servants. The Jews claimed that they were the children and relative of God and that they deserved special privileges. Islam says this claim is wrong. In another ayah, Allah the Exalted says, "Say: O you who are Jews, if you think that you are the favorites of Allah to the exclusion of other people, then invoke death If you are truthful." [The Holy Quran, 62: 6] God told them, "If you really believe you are close friends and relatives of God, then pray for death so that you are freed from this unstable life and join your beloved God who is your friend and relative." Then He says, "But they will never invoke it." [The Holy Quran, 62: 7] God says the Jews would never pray for death.
Part three: The effects of a monotheistic world view
Instances of worship
Sometimes people worship somebody and consider them to be sacred and to enjoy supernatural powers. For example, throughout history some people used to worship some idols or saints. At first, sanctity and spiritual respect appear to be the signs of worship. For example, Christians consider Christ and his pure-hearted mother (may God's greetings be upon them) to have some kind of sanctity. They kneel in front of the statues of Christ and Mary, and they cry and worship them. Worship is not just bowing, prostrating and praising as a sign of heartfelt respect. Worship does not just consist of praying or holding up one's hands with humility. There are some other things that can be called worship in the second sense of the word. What is the second sense of the word "worship"? Worship also means obeying. Obeying somebody in an independent and unconditional way is the same as worshiping them.
According to the Quranic culture, obeying anyone or anything other than God – including political and religious power, internal factors like human passions and carnal tendencies, and external factors like a woman, a person who is unduly respected or a friend – is the same as worshiping them. Anybody who obeys someone or something is in fact worshiping them.
Worshiping God and Satan
Imam Jawad (a.s.) said, "Whoever pays full attention to a speaker becomes his servant." The scope of worship is much wider – not only does it include obeying, but it also includes paying undivided attention to somebody. Does this mean we should avoid paying attention even to truthful comments? The above-mentioned hadith continues, "And if the speaker speaks the words of God, then the listener is the servant of God." If the speaker has full attention of his audience and is speaking the words of God, the people who are listening to him with full attention and concentration are in fact worshiping God. "And if the speaker speaks the words of Satan, then the listener is the servant of Satan." But if the speaker speaks the words of Satan and his words go against the logic and philosophy of divine thought, his audience are in fact obeying and worshiping Satan as they listen to him. Basically, the speaker himself is Satan. From a Quranic perspective, the speaker is Satan itself, not its representative or mouthpiece.
A monotheistic society
When monotheism enters a society, all servants of God in that society become connected. In a monotheistic society, all people – with different skin colors and from different races and social backgrounds – are relatives. When people are connected to the Origin and Creator of the world and to the Almighty Custodian who has full control over all phenomena in the world, they are connected to the same origin and receive help and assistance from the same source. This is the inevitable result of faith in monotheism. From this monotheistic perspective, it is not just human beings who are connected to one another. Rather, all elements of the world, all animals, all things, the heaven, the earth and all other things are connected to one another as well as to human beings. Therefore, everything that a human being can see, feel and perceive is a world and a constellation placed in a wholesome world and a safe environment.
Characteristics of an Islamic society
"Islamic society" means a society in which worship of God prevails among all members of that society. In other words, an Islamic society is a society in which the general course is based on God's orders. Devotion of a society is manifested in a number of things. If these things are seen in a society, the members of that society are God's servants and the society itself is a divine system.
First, this Islamic society should be ruled by God's servants, not His enemies. Taghuts [rulers and governments not sanctioned by God] should not dominate this society. Those who demand that people obey them instead of God, those who want people to serve them like Nimrod, Pharaoh and other taghuts of history, and the people whose hearts are not familiar with God – these people must not dominate this society. It is God's servants who should rule this Islamic society.
Second, divine rules should be practiced in that society. The people should observe the rules of God, not rules that are rooted in the passions, carnal desires or faulty judgments of human beings. The legal framework of that society should be determined by the Holy Quran and divine rules.
Third, justice should be administered in that society because a society in which there is oppression is not a divine society.
Fourth, the members of that society should be treated with respect. The people of that society should be considered honorable. Human beings should not be considered as tools. In that society human beings should be viewed as managers and the best creatures of the world, not as creatures that should only be fed to work. That society should not be indifferent to whether or not its members are capable of understanding things and whether or not the hearts of its members are enthusiastic about lofty goals. Human beings should be honored in that society. The ayah "And surely We have honored the children of Adam" [The Holy Quran, 17: 70] is not just a ceremonial gesture. It is a principle. It is a foundation of an Islamic society. A community in which this principle is not practiced is not an Islamic society. A community in which the people are humiliated, a community in which powerful individuals make the people follow their whims and a community in which the people are not allowed to think, acquire knowledge, choose their path and make efforts on the divine path they have chosen – these are not Islamic communities.
Fifth, there should not be any discrimination in an Islamic society. Being white or black and Arab or non-Arab and being a member of a certain tribe, family or social class should not be grounds for discrimination. Human beings should simply be treated as human beings, and privileges should be granted on the basis of piety. And all these signs were present in the early years of Islam.
Sixth, jihad in the way of God is among the signs of an Islamic and divine society. A society in which there is no jihad and no efforts are made for the sake of God cannot be an Islamic society.
The effect of monotheism on the economic structure of society
In a monotheistic society, everybody should benefit from social facilities. This does not mean that everybody should have the same amount of money in a monotheistic society. Money should not be distributed equally. Rather, it is the facilities and opportunities that should be distributed evenly. Some people are hardworking, and some other people are lazy. If somebody works harder, he earns more money, and it is not right to give his earnings to other people so that everybody has the same amount of money. Rather, it is the opportunities for studying, training and working that should be distributed evenly among the people of a monotheistic society. Opportunities are distributed evenly among the people of a monotheistic society.
The effect of monotheism on the economic structure of society is that it necessitates creating a state of balance in society, not a state of equality. At the beginning of his caliphate, Imam Ali (a.s.) said that God has required ulama not to tolerate hunger of the oppressed and gluttony of oppressors. This duty was the reason why Imam Ali (a.s.) accepted to be the caliph. This is the most obvious duty of an Islamic economic system, and the economic issues of Islam are inferred on the basis of this duty. This state of balance is the result of faith in God. It goes without saying that the situation of society would be different if there were no God, if this world did not have an owner beyond human beings and if human beings could own whatever they gained relying on their power.
A monotheistic perspective on the financial issues of a monotheistic society is one of the most important requirements. According to the Holy Quran, "And give them of the wealth of Allah which He has given you." [The Holy Quran, 24: 33] Whatever human beings have belongs to God. All wealth is from God, which is held in trust. Whatever people own has been bestowed on them by God, and it should be returned to Him. This is a necessity for the monotheistic ideology.
The effect of monotheism on the ethics of society
In a monotheistic society, the way the people think and their attitude towards their religious brothers, other people and their own personal life is different from the norms in materialistic systems. They live in the presence of God. They ask God to fulfill their needs. They love Him. They Fear Him. They seek refuge in Him. They consider themselves as His servants. They feel they love His servants. They do not oppress His servants, and they do not envy them. All the virtues mentioned in books of ethics result from faith in God. Faith in God forms the foundations of Islamic ethics.
The effect of monotheistic thought on the structure of an Islamic society
There is a remarkable and fundamental issue that is basic to the discussions of social issues of Islam. Paying attention to this issue can help people understand all social issues in Islam. The fundamental question is: What effects do monotheistic and Islamic beliefs have on the social structure of an Islamic society? In other words, what is the difference between the general structure of a faithful society and that of a society whose people do not believe in God? Is faith in God limited to accepting the existence of God without letting it affect one's behavior? Is faith in God limited to accepting the existence of God without engaging in daily prayers, fasting and avoidance of dishonesty? Is faith in God irrelevant to the form and system of the society one lives in? Or should faith in God be reflected in the social life of faithful and monotheistic people? There is no doubt that the purpose of faith in God is not just to improve the hearts and minds of people. Rather, faith in God means building a world that is appropriate for this belief. Having faith in monotheism and in God affects both political and economic systems of a monotheistic society. It also affects the ethical principles of every member of a monotheistic society. A society whose people have faith in God should be ruled by a religious government. That is to say, Islam, sharia and Islamic rules and regulations should govern the life of the people. And those who practice these regulations in a monotheistic society should be the most qualified people in that society. First, they should know sharia and Islamic rules better than anybody else. They should have complete mastery over sharia and divine rules. Second, they should have the capability to avoid sins and deliberate diversion and mistakes – that is, the same thing that is known as "justice" in Islamic culture.
The root of freedom in Islamic culture
The monotheistic world view is the root of freedom in Islamic culture. The principle of monotheism – with its deep, subtle and accurate meanings – guarantees freedom of man. That is to say, anybody who has faith in the oneness of God and believes in monotheism must allow people to be free. The first thing that all divine prophets used to do was to invite people to obey God and avoid taghut and non-divine people who wanted to shackle and enslave human beings. "Serve Allah and shun Evil" [The Holy Quran, 16: 36] Therefore, Islamic freedom is based on monotheism. The spirit of monotheism is to reject serving anyone except God. The root of freedom in Islam is the personality and inherent value of human beings who are not prepared to serve anyone except God. In fact the root of man's freedom is monotheism and knowledge of God. In Islamic culture, free human beings cannot obey anyone but God.
Monotheism, equality of rights among human beings
Monotheism, equality of rights among human beings
The meaning of God's order is not the same as the meaning of the Book. Of course God's order is in His Book. However, the Book is one thing, and God's order is quite another. God's order is what He has announced to His servants. Allah the Exalted has provided a set of general guidelines for the life of human beings. That is to say, God has specified a framework, and human beings have to move on within this framework. What is this framework? This framework is what all divine prophets used to promote among people. It is the same thing that is inferred from Islamic principles – namely, monotheism, respect for human beings and equality in terms of such things as rights, nature and rules. It is this framework that evolves throughout history, and it is a movement, an order and an agreement between God and His servants.
What is it that taghuts do? They change this state of affairs. God calls people to monotheism. God asks people to worship Him, not each other. But taghuts step in and change this state of affairs. They encourage people to worship God's servants in one way or another. God invites people to respect and value human beings, and this was the basis of God's plan. But taghuts base their plans on humiliation of man. Today in the materialistic western culture, people feel the existence of a void in their daily lives that can only be filled by God. This is because they have strayed away from their original nature, and they have been changed. Non-divine plans make human beings forget God. This is not to say that non-divine plans make people forget the name of God or the existence of a truth called God. They may even appear to have faith in God. What they forget is the right of God – that is to say, they do not know the position of God in society.
The condition for salvation
Salvation is the deliverance that has been promised by the Prophet of Islam (s.w.a.): "Say there is no god but Allah, and you will achieve salvation." Salvation from wrong thought, bad behavior, attachments, shackles and millstones that hang from people's hands, heads, necks and hearts, and then salvation from oppressive powers that oppress human beings. That is to say, if a people with perfect thoughts, minds, hearts and beliefs are ruled by an oppressive, colonial, exploiting or autocratic power, they have not achieved perfect salvation. Perfect salvation is salvation that affects the heart, mind, behavior, society, politics and spirituality. These kinds of salvation are the goal of religion and monotheism.
The paradise for monotheists
Everything that righteous servants of God do – including their sleep, eating, speech, trade, sport, studying and political and social activities – is in line with their movement towards God. By moving towards this goal, a paradise will be created around human beings, a paradise which is the result of human beings’ emotions and willpower being in line with the natural course of creation. In this Islamic, monotheistic and spiritual life, there is no contradiction, confrontation and discord. The monotheistic world view creates a paradise within human beings.
Monotheism in the political system
Monotheism means that man must not worship anybody except God. Anything other than God is taghut and is the opposite of God. Therefore, whenever obedience to man is in line with obedience to God in the political system of a country, it is appropriate. And whenever it is obedience to anything other than God, it is wrong. Basically, this is the foundation of an Islamic system.
Polytheistic thoughts – or more precisely, satanic and taghuti thoughts – affect personal and social behavior of people and the way a social system is formed. Taghut is another word for Satan. Satan means a force that creates evil, corruption and deviation. Taghut means “rebel”, which is the same as evil, corruption and deviation. And taghuti forces are satanic thoughts.
Broad perspective
A monotheist is broadminded. A monotheist is liberated from being narrow-minded and short-sighted. A monotheist does not say, "I was defeated in this arena" or "our camp is forced to retreat in this arena." A monotheist does not accept defeat. He knows that the territory of monotheistic thought is as vast as the life of humanity. The vision of a monotheist is not limited to material things and insignificant needs. When a monotheist takes a look around him, apart from material needs, he sees tens and hundreds of needs that are among the greatest and the most important needs of human beings. His attention is not focused solely on insignificant needs. When a monotheist takes a look around him, he sees the future as extremely vast. A monotheist does not believe that the world is finite. This is because he sees this world as connected to the hereafter. He considers this world and the hereafter as two sides of the same entity. He does not consider death to be the end of this path. Rather, he sees death as a door and a passageway that leads to a vaster world. These are the characteristics of monotheism. Death is the end of everything for a person who is not a monotheist – no matter how selfless he is and no matter how interested he is in noble human ideas. This is while for a monotheist, death is the beginning of another life in a more interesting and more pleasant environment. If a materialistic person is truly selfless, he will be prepared to step into what he believes to be nonexistence. But it is easier for a monotheist – even one who is far less selfless than a materialistic person – to drop himself into what a materialistic person believes to be nonexistence. This is because a monotheist does not believe in what a materialistic person calls nonexistence. He thinks of death as another state of human life.
No fear for monotheists
The most important psychological effect of monotheism on human beings is that it causes monotheists not to fear the enemies on the path of God, on the path of fulfilling their obligations and on the path of what they consider to be the purpose of their existence. Addressing faithful people, the Holy Quran says on several occasions, "So do not fear them, and fear Me." Somebody who fears God will not fear anybody else. Fear will be removed from the heart of anybody who is a monotheist and believes in the power of God. It is fear that takes this world and the hereafter away from the people who have them. The fear of poverty causes people to avoid making chartable donations. The fear of hardships causes people to humiliate themselves, commit crimes and cause tragedies. The fear of losing their life causes people to take the life of other people or ruin their social life.
Dealing with taghut in a monotheistic manner
The envoy of the Muslim army entered the glorious Sassanid palace. The envoy who was wearing tattered clothes stepped into the palace of such a great political power. Did he feel afraid? Not at all. After all, when an unimportant person meets a great and powerful person, he tries his best to form some kind of relationship with that powerful person and get close to him, even if through flattery and expression of fear or humility. Was that what happened? Not at all. The envoy walked towards the throne. Allegedly, he even put his foot on Yazdgerd's throne because he saw that Yazdgerd would not come to him and take the letter. He was carrying a message. Others stepped forward to take the letter from him, but he refused to give it to them and said that he would only hand it to Yazdgerd himself. And Yazdgerd would not stand up and go to the Arab, so the envoy had to step forward and give it to him. He went up to Yazdgerd's throne and handed the letter to him. The king of Persia asked, "Why did you come here?" He replied, "I am here to liberate people from worshiping God's servants and lead them towards worshiping God, and to liberate them from the restrictions of this world and lead them towards the vastness of this world and the hereafter." He told Yazdgerd that he had come to liberate the people living in different parts of the country from worshiping him and his governors and commanders.
Monotheistic responsibilities in life
First and foremost, faith in every thought and creed must be based on conscious knowledge of them. Unquestioning and blind faith is not acceptable. Second, faith must be accompanied by responsibilities. What people are required to have faith in is definitely something that brings about a personal or social responsibility – a responsibility that may be related to humanity or its destiny. Monotheism is a kind of awareness that bring about obligations and responsibilities for human beings.
The responsibilities that monotheism puts on the shoulders of faithful people are considered to be the biggest, the heaviest and the most significant responsibilities among all Islamic and religious obligations.
The first responsibility is that worship and obedience is restricted to God only. The second responsibility that monotheism puts on the shoulders of its followers is to establish a monotheistic and classless society – a society in which people are not separated from one another on the basis of rights and privileges, a society in which all people live under the same legal roof, a society in which everybody moves in the same direction and enjoys the same facilities and rights.
Being prepared to defend monotheistic thought
Throughout history, there has always been a confrontation between justice and injustice, and this confrontation is not something that is particular to the modern world. The confrontation between good and evil is the result of the confrontation between justice and injustice. Allah the Exalted says, "And had there not been Allah's repelling some people by others, cloisters and churches and synagogues and mosques would have certainly been pulled down." [The Holy Quran, 22: 40] Using the power that they receive from reliance on God and the material sources of power, some groups of people in the world should check other groups of people who spread corruption on earth. As a result, the war between good and evil has been a constant throughout history. The difference between divine faiths and non-divine thoughts is that from the perspective of divine faiths the war [between justice and injustice] is something that is fought for the sake of God. It is not a blind act. It is not a purposeless and futile act that is done with the aim of achieving power. The war is considered to be jihad in the way of God. It was due to this reason that during his ten-year rule in Medina, the Holy Prophet (s.w.a.) fought about 70 wars with polytheists and the enemies of Islam. During this ten-year period, the Holy Prophet (s.w.a.) did not have a moment of peace. And it was due to this reason that the Islamic civilization, culture and ethics continued as a movement in history. It is absolutely clear and natural for taghuts of the world not to let even a single righteous movement remain in the world. It is natural for them to want to uproot this movement. Divine and monotheistic thought is like a sweet-smelling flower that will be destroyed if it is left undefended. When one believes that fighting in the way of God – which is in fact an attempt to defend divine and spiritual values – is a necessity, meeting the requirements of this war becomes another necessity. The principle that Muslims should prepare themselves to fight in the way of God is mentioned in the Holy Quran as well. "Against them make ready your strength to the utmost of your power, including steeds of war, to strike terror into (the hearts of) the enemies of Allah and your enemies." [The Holy Quran, 8: 60]

Supreme Leader's Speech on His Arrival in Qom
Supreme Leader's Speech on His Arrival in Qom
19/10/2010
The following is the full text of the speech delivered on October 19, 2010 by Ayatollah Khamenei the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution to members of the Construction Basij.
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all sentient beings, and peace and greetings upon our Master and Prophet, Ab-al-Qassem Al-Mustafa Muhammad, and upon his immaculate and infallible household, especially the one remaining with Allah on earth.
I would like to extend my congratulations on the auspicious birthday anniversary of Imam Reza (a.s.), and the birthday anniversary of Hazrat Masoumeh (s.a.). I am truly thankful to Allah the Exalted who gave me the opportunity to be present in the company of you dear people of Qom and have a meeting with you in this great city, which is reminiscent of many memories for me. Qom is the city of knowledge. It is the city of jihad, the city of insight. The insight of the people of Qom is a crucial factor which has revealed itself during past 32 years. It is interesting that the establishment of the city of Qom resulted from a jihad-like movement accompanied by insight. That is to say, when the Ash'aris settled in this region, they turned it into a center for propagating the teachings of the Holy Prophet's household (a.s.). They started a cultural jihad in this region. Before they came to Qom, the Ash'aris had already engaged in armed jihad. The leader of the Ash'aris had fought alongside Zayd ibn Ali (a.s.). This was why al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf became furious with them, and they were forced to leave for this region and make it the center of knowledge relying on their efforts, insight and knowledge. This caused Hazrat Masoumeh (s.a.) to express her tendency to stay in Qom when she was passing by. It was all because of the Ash'ari luminaries who were living in this region. The Ash'aris welcomed Hazrat Masoumeh (s.a.) and invited her to their city. After her demise, they built a shrine for her in this city. As the ones who started this great cultural movement, the people of Qom established a center for promoting the teachings of the Holy Prophet's household (a.s.) at that time. They trained hundreds of religious scholars, hadith experts and exegetes of Islamic and Quranic teachings and send them to different parts of the world of Islam. Knowledge spread from Qom to Khorasan, Iraq and Sham. This shows the insight that the early residents of Qom enjoyed. Qom was established on the basis of insight and jihad.
The same thing happened in the contemporary era as well. That is to say, Qom became the center of the most superior Islamic and divine teachings. Thanks to the presence, selfless efforts and insight of great religious scholars, a source of knowledge was created in this region which benefitted the entire world of Islam.
I would like to remind you of two important historical stages in which the people of Qom played a central role. The people of Qom played crucial and memorable roles in these two stages. One of these historical stages was the day of Ashura in the year 1342 and the 15th of Khordad, which was two days after the day of Ashura. On the day of Ashura, the people of Qom gathered in Feyziyeh School. They listened to Imam Khomeini's (r.a.) call, and their hearts were filled with enthusiasm. Two days later, when they heard the news of the Imam's arrest, they gathered in Feyziyeh School. This great movement by the people of Qom caused the clerical movement - which was led by our magnanimous Imam (r.a.) - to spread beyond the walls of Islamic seminaries into society. The people of Qom were at the forefront of this movement. It was the people of Qom who accomplished this great achievement.
The second historical stage happened in the year 1356 when the people of Qom discovered the enemy's plot and realized the magnitude of the enemy's insult to our magnanimous Imam (r.a.). They realized the nature of the issue. It was not just a simple insult. The first widespread public demonstrations were staged against that treacherous move in the city of Qom. The blood of the youth of Qom was shed in the streets. They lost their lives. They proved the truth of their words with their blood. During the past 30 years, the people of Qom have entered different arenas with sincerity and exemplary insight. The enemy had plans for Qom. If the people of Qom had not been vigilant and insightful, the enemy's plans for Qom would have proven dangerous. The vigilance of the people and the existence of Qom Seminary in this city have turned Qom into the center of insight.
Since the late Ayatollah Haeri - the founder of Qom Islamic Seminary - many great marja taqlids have lived in this city, including the late Ayatollah Boroujerdi, Ayatollah Golpaygani, Ayatollah Araki, Ayatollah Mar'ashi and Ayatollah Bahjat. Thankfully, there are great marja taqlids and prominent religious scholars in this city today. Islamic seminaries are a source of blessings, and the sincere, insightful and mujahid people of this city have shown that they appreciate the value of Islamic seminaries and the clergy. They are present when they are needed. This is the city that became the stronghold and hope of the Revolution after the uprising of that great man - Imam Khomeini (r.a.).
I have limited time to speak at this huge gathering. Due to the big enthusiastic welcome, there was a long delay on the way here. We are pressed for time. I will make only a few short comments.
First of all, Qom is the birthplace of the Revolution. The most religious city of the country became the center and birthplace of the biggest Revolution of the contemporary era. What does this mean? It means that the entire world should know that this Revolution is religious in nature. It is not possible to impose any materialistic motives on this Revolution. Its birthplace is Qom. Its leader was a great faqih, philosopher and religious scholar. This is what the entire world thinks of the Islamic Revolution. This is one point.
The enemies of this Revolution have tried to harm the Revolution and the Islamic Republic during the past 32 years. What was the focus of their attacks? Their attacks were focused on two essential targets: One target was religion and the other was the people and their loyalty. They know that if this Revolution were not religious in nature, it would not have the power to resist. This is because it is religion that prohibits its followers from surrendering to oppression and encourages them to counter oppressors. Religion provides human life with justice, freedom, spirituality and progress. This is the characteristic of religion. Therefore, it is not possible for a government that is based on religion to surrender to the pressure and coercion of enemies, bullies and greedy people. If this Revolution lacked the element of religion, the leaders and the officials of the Revolution might have backed off after receiving a privilege from the enemies, thus opening the way for the enemies to dominate the country again. But because religion forms the backbone of the Revolution, such a thing has not happened so far, and it will not happen in the future either.
This was the great lesson that our honorable Imam (r.a.) taught us and all our people. Have faith in your power. Try to increase this power on a daily basis. Have faith in Allah the Exalted and His promises. If you resist and move ahead in a wise manner, you can rest assured that you will benefit from divine assistance. This is a natural consequence of the faith of the people and the religious nature of the Revolution and the Islamic Republic.
The populist nature of the Revolution means that it has been loyally supported by the people. The Islamic Republic has been fully approved and supported by the people during all this time.
If it were not for the presence of the people and if a gap had developed between the people and the government, the Islamic Republic would not be able to resist against the enemies. It is the firm presence of the people that supports the resistance of the officials. These two targets - namely, religion and the people - are essential. Therefore, the enemy has focused its attacks on these targets. It has targeted religion in one way, and the loyalty and faith of the people in another way. You see that since the 1360s when the Imam was alive, both foreign enemies and their paid mercenaries or unpaid servants inside the country have questioned and rejected religious truths and obvious Islamic facts. This was not just an accident. They have emphasized this. This issue started with Salman Rushdie and continued with anti-Islam Hollywood movies, caricatures, the burning of the Quran and different anti-Islam events that took place in different parts of the world. They did all these things in order to undermine people's faith in Islam and what is held sacred in Islam. They did all these things and used different methods in order to shake the foundations of religious faith of our people - especially our young generation. They resorted to different things ranging from promoting debauchery to propagating fake schools of mysticism - fake forms of genuine mysticism - the Baha'i Faith and the home church network. These are some of the things that the enemies of Islam are pursuing today through studying, planning and prediction. And the goal is to undermine religion in society.
They do different things in order to undermine the loyalty of the people to the Islamic Republic. They start rumors in order to make the people disappointed in our government officials and the heads of the three government branches. They sow the seeds of suspicion. Using their numerous tools of propaganda, they question anything good and valuable that is done in the country. If there are any weaknesses, they are hugely magnified. They do not show the strengths. Their purpose is to make the people, especially the young generation, disappointed. In order to encourage the people to step off the scene, they paint a gloomy picture of the future prospects for our people and youth. However, the essential point is that all the efforts by the enemies of the Iranian nation and the Islamic Republic during the past 32 years have failed. They have not achieved any results so far. They were decisively defeated. They thought they could develop a gap between the people and the Islamic Republic. The commitment of the people to religious matters and spiritual values has increased on a daily basis. When did so many youth take part in religious ceremonies in our country? When did so many youth take part in religious ceremonies of the month of Ramadan and Eid ul-Fitr? These massive public gatherings and this public insight about political issues are unprecedented. When some people who had been provoked, insulted Imam Hussein (a.s.) on the day of Ashura last year, it took less than two days for the people to take to the streets on the 9th of Dey and publicly expressed their explicit position. Not only have the enemies and their propaganda not managed to undermine religious feelings of the people, but their feelings have also grown stronger and their religious knowledge has become deeper.
There is no doubt that the enemy has failed in its attempt to develop a gap between the people and the Islamic Republic. In last year's presidential elections, 40 million voters went to the ballot boxes. In fact, the election was a referendum in which 40 million took part and voted for the Islamic Republic. This was what enraged the enemy. They decided to minimize the effects through a fitna, but they failed in that attempt as well. The people stood up against the fitna. The fitna of the year 1388 vaccinated the country. It equipped the people with the means to fight against the political and social microbes that could have been effective. It increased the insight of the people.
In certain newspapers published inside the country, some people who had claims to understanding and knowledge wrote against religion and Islamic principles. Their writings failed to affect the people as well. Pay attention to the point that the enemies are pursuing two essential goals regarding religion. This was because they saw what an essential role these two factors play in the life of the people. One of the goals was to promote Islam minus the clergy because they realized the amazing effect that the clergy have on the people of Iran and their movement. Of course they used to whisper the same things before the Revolution as well. The central role of the clergy in the Revolution forced them to put aside the idea temporarily. But they started to work on this issue later on. The other goal is to promote Islam minus politics and the separation of religion from politics. These are among the things that they are persistently promoting today in their press, writings and websites. The issue is important to them. We should pay attention to the point that whatever the enemy emphasizes and whatever the enemy's plans are focused on can provide us with a general strategy and blueprint. We should pay attention to whatever they select as the target of their attacks, and we should know that we need to emphasize their targets - namely, public presence on the scene and religious and Islamic teachings.
They started imposing sanctions on our country since the year 1358 and 1359, but the purpose of imposing new sanctions is to pressure the people and to develop a gap between the people and the Islamic Republic. Fortunately, both the officials and the people announced and showed in action that by Allah's favor these sanctions will not have a noticeable effect on the lives of the people. Having tolerated the troubles of the 1360s and the early years of the Revolution and having achieved these great advances, our people are more confident, and they are more hopeful about the future. They will continue countering the enemy and foiling its plots.
There may be a conflict between my speech and the prayer time, so I will briefly discuss a few principles that we should observe in our behavior - taking the enemy plots into consideration.
National solidarity is one issue. I am addressing this point to the elites as well as our ordinary citizens. The issue of unity should be taken seriously. I speak a lot about the importance of public solidarity, and I have touched on a number of characteristics as well. It is not enough to say that one is in favor of unity - there are certain signs and criteria.
The next issue is the importance of increasing solidarity of the people and the elites with the three branches of the government. Solidarity with the three branches of the government should be increased on a daily basis. The three branches of the government should be assisted, especially the executive branch which shoulders many responsibilities. Starting rumors and ignoring the efforts that are made are not at all in the interest of the country and its future.
The third point is about strengthening religious faith and responding to the intellectual needs and questions of the young generation, which - for the most part - should be addressed by the clergy and Islamic seminaries. They are raising doubts all the time. It is necessary to respond to the doubts on a constant and day-to-day basis.
The fourth point is about introducing the clergy in a correct and appropriate manner, which is not a responsibility that lies on the shoulders of the clergy only. Our intellectuals can show the role of the clergy in the country. They can show how the clergy - especially our honorable marja taqlids and the luminaries of our Islamic seminaries - helped society go through sensitive and difficult stages.
The next point is about the efforts made by our youth to increase their insight. Our youth should make efforts in this regard. It is necessary to identify the enemy and its methods. This is a responsibility that lies on the shoulders of the youth.
The next point which should be considered as necessary is scientific progress and moving ahead in the direction specified in the comprehensive scientific plan. Thankfully, it is five or six years now that the efforts to prepare the comprehensive scientific plan have been increased, and good achievements have already been made in this regard. It is necessary to make more efforts. By Allah's favor, this movement will continue faster. It is necessary to start a new movement in our Islamic seminaries. Hopefully, I will speak about this in a meeting with members of our Islamic seminaries.
Another important duty of the government is to make efforts to eliminate the factors that create problems for the people and make them dissatisfied: The daily life of the people, the issue of unemployment, the issue of bureaucratic affairs, the issue of appointing people to different responsibilities - especially in the case of high-ranking positions - the issue of municipalities and the issue of the police who are directly in contact with the people and are able to resolve many of their problems or, God forbid, give rise to public dissatisfaction. Therefore, different organizations should work harmoniously in different areas. They should work in harmony and try to complement each other's work. There should not be any discord. This duty is related to governmental organizations.
I would like to say a few things about the city of Qom. Qom was the birthplace of the Revolution. It is the place where this great historic event was started. From an international point of view, Qom enjoys a special position. Different people from different countries travel to this city. Some people do not travel to this city due to certain considerations or are sensitive to this city, but even those people have a special view of Qom and follow the developments that happen in this city. For example, today's impressive gathering will attract a lot of attention. They may not even mention it in their propaganda, but those who are in charge of policy-making will observe and evaluate this gathering from an international perspective. The biggest Islamic seminary of the world of Islam is in this city. No other Islamic seminary is as great as Qom Seminary. Here is a center for worship and spirituality. The magnificent shrine of Hazrat Masoumeh (s.a.) is in this city. The Jamkaran Mosque was built here. The shrines of different descendants of the infallible Imams (a.s.) are located in Qom. If the shrines on different streets of Qom were located in different places, a city would be built around each of them. These are the international and national potentialities and functions of this holy city.
Unfortunately, Qom is suffering from different kinds of backwardness because it was hated by different governments during the time of taghut. The honorable government officials should quickly compensate for this backwardness through their determined efforts. Of course many things have been done since the Revolution. The city of Qom has received more funds since the year 1379 when Qom had already became a province. According to the reports that I have received, after the year 1384 more funds have been spent in this city than in any other city of the country. Therefore, good projects have already been started, but all of them should be completed. In terms of public needs and aesthetic appearance, this city should make the kind of progress that the people of Qom deserve. If we want to make up for this accumulated backwardness, we need to work hard.
The issue of water is among the most important needs of this city, which has been followed up seriously since several years ago. Good achievements have already been made. A large portion of this issue has been resolved, and I deem it necessary to express my gratitude to the officials in charge. But I ask our honorable government officials to provide the people of Qom with sufficient water supplies as soon as possible. This is the essential need of the people of Qom which should be addressed.
The issue of Qom's agriculture is also important. I heard they are planning to channel water from Tehran to the Mesileh region, helping Qom's agriculture - which was once very prominent in this area - to flourish again.
Qom's handicrafts, especially its famous carpets, should be supported. By Allah's favor, I will highlight the necessary points to the officials during this journey.
What I would like to stress is the architecture of Qom. Today great things are being done in this city. Construction projects are well under way. They should make sure to observe the principles of Islamic architecture in these projects. Symbols of the Revolution should be visible in the architecture of this city. This is because Qom is the city of Islam and the Revolution.
The last point is that when the honorable officials of this city disagree about an issue, they should not let their disagreements affect the lives of the people and get them into trouble. Different governmental organizations of this city disagree about various things, which may affect the lives of the people. I have noted down these points of disagreement, but I will not read them out. However, my general recommendation is that everybody should join hands and cooperate. Government officials should render services to the people through cooperation and complementing each other's work. Hopefully, with the support of the people and through their unfailing presence, the people will enable the officials to complete the work that has been done in this country after the Revolution and make the benefits visible to the world of Islam.
Dear God, bestow Your blessings on these honorable people and the entire Iranian nation. Dear God, make us appreciate the selfless efforts of those who helped this movement reach this point. Dear God, help us to become true soldier of Islam. Bestow Your grace and approval on the honorable and hardworking officials of this country. By Your grace and assistance, make it easier for them to help the people and render services to them. Make the holy heart of the Imam of the Age (may our souls be sacrificed for his sake) satisfied with us. Help us be among his companions both in his presence and in his absence.
Greetings be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings
